"If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music." - Gustav Mahler

An experiment in a pen-and-paper composing general, made for all the theory autists
Post with the intent on discussing composition. And remember, this is NOT /classical/. Any music, such as jazz, is acceptable.
Post clyps and accompanying notation so we can accurately critique your composing from a theory perspective

Should we have something like a challenge, like before?
Any books or compositions on quartal/quintal harmony?

The Kostka in the OP isn't a comprehensive guide, obviously, in fact only one or two pages is really dedicated to quartal and quintal harmony, but it does go over non-tertian chords in general.

I honestly think we should avoid them. The reason /comp/ died was because of circle-jerking over the same 2 topics of theory over and over and over half the threads being about people talking about the challenge. I think /comp/ should be more about discussion of a varied list of topics, as well as communal learning of new topics.

>discussion of a varied list of topics, as well as communal learning of new topics
That was the original point of the challenges, though. Each week we'd delve into a different topic, modulation, variation, form etc.
I do see your point, though.

Modern Jazz harmony by Ken Pullig has some stuff on quartal harmony, but it's more about how to actually write them in a big band context. I've yet to find any book that has a great breakdown on quartal harmony.

Actually twentieth century harmony by Vincent Persichetti has some good stuff in it about it. It's not super long, but it's very rich with info about it.
