In order to be successful, you generally need to be part of a more-or-less serious music scene, and know the people who organize concerts, distribute albums and so on.
Zach's notoriety certainly helped the band.
However, nobody would have let them play live and promote their stuff. Reputation isn't everything.

I think you're spot on - Zach is the only reason anyone even heard of DG and then it just kept expanding. Now the question is how did he get popular
