It wouldn't hurt to listen in chronological order or as close to it as you can. He led a long career and has a lot of different stuff out there. His later albums are vastly underrated, but I think you want to work you way up to them.

I'm not opposed to an album full of GOOD covers, but these ones were awful indeed, with poor & rushed arrangements (Arnold Layne is ok tho). it's a shame because he did occasionally great covers:
