>Still, Boucher’s not entirely prepared to abandon the glamour of big budget videos just yet; she has also just finished collaborating with Janelle Monáe on her video for “Venus Fly,” their shared track on Art Angels, which will serve as the 11th and final video off the album.

>As she closes the door on this album, Boucher has a calmer project in mind for the next: “I’m really vibing on making something really slow and gorgeous that just breathes, and has room to breathe. I feel like my work has always been fast paced, kinetic, and almost just manic and I feel like for me the hardest thing I can do is make something that’s slow and heavy. I’m so ADD in my work; I really want to push myself into something that would be slower and more reflective.”

Again, if she ever comes back, she absolutely needs to visit our archeological sites
Everyone knows how she uses a lot of medieval/avant pop influences (who were before influenced by gothic and renaissance religious music)
Now imagine her using also prehispanic music in her albums
A death whistle, the seashell horn, maybe even using lo-fi drums and rattles as a base for her tempo
I don't know what it'd sound like, but IMO would be fucking awesome

Well I mean, somewhere online I read she has about 4 million. It's not that much compared to Kanye or Bieber, but it's a lot more of what I have right now
And also, she can go to Europe and Asia in private planes and shit, so she isn't really too poor either. I guess part of her aesthetic is to appear in that "carded" look, but I also understand maybe she doesn't like spending money in frivolous things or luxuries.

Fwiw:

>And the drawing she made for the cover definitely mines one of her main creative veins: an affinity for Mesoamerican style. “When I went to Mexico, I was actually really inspired by a lot of Aztec art. I went to the museum of anthropology and Teotihuacan. It was all so horrifying and elaborate. More similar to my own art than a lot of stuff I’ve seen, even just structurally, because they use lots of little images of screaming faces and strange patterns to make big elaborate pieces.”
>Boucher says she usually draws during movie marathons, and that the Visions cover image was hatched with India ink, watercolour paper and “Ghost in the Shell II night, so I was thinking a lot about death and shit,” she says. “I do visual art in the same manner as music in that it’s intensive, but it’s not private at all. The album cover image took about 16 hours, I did it over two days. But it’s weird because I was sitting in my friend’s living room the whole time, so it was a much more social experience and there was a lot of feedback from my friends, and it was a bit different in that regard. At this point there is way less pressure for me to make visual art, so I only really do it out of love, whereas music has deadlines and pressures and stuff, so it’s not as free anymore. It used to be the opposite.”
>This is probably why the prevailing influence on the Visions pieces is very personal — “my symbols,” Boucher calls them: the penetrating eyes (or lack thereof), the writhing textures, a weeping alien, the slanted hearts, flush roses and cushy bows, which apparently she’s been drawing since high school. “The eyeball was my first symbol and I use it in lots of ways all the time, but I also really like faces without eyes — which is why I’m attracted to skulls a lot.

Wow. I mean, I can see how she uses a lot of the barroque style, but I somehow thought of the mexica art as having a more "gory" feel to it.
The one drawing of her I've seen approximate the most to that concept is the SCREAM goblin/troll (pic related), which looks very similar to standard representations of the Tzitzimitl.
I really love how she incorporates all these cultures into her work. It'd be awesome if she did the same with the musical heritage of these civilizations

Fun fact: REALiTI was recorded in early 2013.
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/17367-grimes-realiti/
>>
>>69280109

Why did she decide to ruin her probably best track with an awful albuim version?
>>
[Continuing from >>69280094 ]
If for no other reason than that it can stand on its own. Imo the others work great in the context of their respective albums, but aren't really the sort of tracks you'd give a listen to on their own.
>>
>>69280157
>ruin
She didn't ruin anything. You have 2 versions and you could listen to both. If she never released the demo you would say the album version is the best thing since sliced bread. People are always ungrateful.

Anyway, FYI she lost the working files of that demo and she recreated the whole song from scratch. And only because the reception of that song was so great because she planned to not include it on Art Angels.
>>
>>69279935
As a standalone I would say - Butterfly.
>If you're looking for a dream girl
>I'l never be your dream girl
My kokoro...

But for albums I would say Beast Infection. Damn good.

Vanessa, whenever the video came out. Listened to it all night desu.
>>
>>69280494
Sounds accurate. Demo is more "calm, melodic and melancholic", suits Visions (for i.e. Genesis\Oblivion)
>>
Can't help but feel like her live vocal is underwhelming. I know, Claire said it a couple of times "I'm more a producer than singer" but shit, still, watch this

https://biqle.ru/watch/-9986050_456239141
(russian video site? cause youtube doesn't allow it)
She needs to work on it.
>>
>>69281339
Eh. She got the job done.

There's a very good reason why great live singers are not in the habit of wildly jumping about and dancing while performing - because vigorous body movements directly interfere with proper breath control for singing. Tbh she painted herself into a corner on that front with the whole Art Angels tour by deciding upon such vocals-heavy setlists while also focusing so much on dancing/choreography/crowd interaction (fwiw this isn't all just me speculating - can't find it atm, but there's a point in this interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-qB_Vu0WDY where the issue of losing vocals during live performance due to excessive movement comes up specifically.) Imo it's gonna be most interesting to see where she goes next, especially if she really decides upon this whole "calmer" vibe >>69274036 - since it should allow her voice to shine much better live.

Don't get me wrong - imo the whole Art Angels tour vibe/paradigm was fantastic (and I'm saying that as someone who got to see it live.) It was just EXTREMELY technically unforgiving for delivering good live vocals, and - speaking as a professional singer myself - super props to her for doing as well as she did with it. Especially considering all the crazy shireking/yelling/screaming involved.

You are right.

>>69281339
Grimes sings better when she stands almost still. On this Art Angels tour, not only she danced much more than before, but the new songs were also very demanding, vocals-wise. So, in order to deliver an entertaining show, she had to sacrifice the quality of the vocal performance a little. Also don't forget that her previous songs were much more drenched in reverb while the AA songs are more like classic pop songs, with the vocals in foreground.

Despite that, sometimes she's really good live, as you can see in the very first video posted, that Glastonbury performance (except the notably weaker live version of WP2).

Dude, I'm listening to many other songs of hers (including bootlegs and rarities), there's not enough time and will to listen to AA every single day. Plus, there's other music to listen to. >>69285968
Yeah, I know. But I kind of thought most of Visions was really dreamy poppy, and pretty much all AA seems really happy to me

I think this is a common thing: people not being impressed when they first heard her music, only to fall in love with it later. The great thing is that her music doesn't wear out, it still sounds great regardless of the playcount.

Maybe i need to get my ears checked, she sounds an awful lot like.. kylie minogue (?) in this album.

Not really a bad thing, just an observation.
>>
>>69294084
Not really. You think that probably because of her high pitched voice and the electropop instrumentals.
>>
>>69294084
The guitar ruined it for me. She needs to stay the fuck away from that thing. I mean for Christ's sake she still has to put tape markings on her frets.
>>
name me some grimes songs that sound like realiti in that airy etheral way

not that heavy too intense way like some of her other songs
>>
>>69290166
grimes really doesn't have hooks like carly and that's what i mostly ask from my pop music

>>
>>69294260

>>
>>69294275
Fuck, I misread hooks as looks. My bad.

Now talking about hooks, honestly Grimes has much better and insidious hooks. Not even that Call Me Maybe song could compare to Genesis, Oblivion, Kill V. Maim or Realiti.
>>
>>69294282
faggot bro, you seem like the type of person who is never satisfied, that must be why you listen to grimthe
>>
>>69294353
im not satisfied but your mom does a great job at almost filling the hole when i fill her hole
>>
>>69294307
grimes hooks mostly get old for me rather fast. when i first heard kill v maim i had it stuck in my head for a week but after that i just got tired of it. but anyway, to decide who is catchier is really hard and it'll just be a matter of personal preference i guess.

i'll recognize that probably grimes has more adventurous music and more complete as an artist in terms of playing different instruments etc. whereas carly just sticks to most traditional synthpop formulas. but for me that's secondary and i really can't complain when her formula, albeit already heard, works so good.

since you brought up looks i would pick carly as well, i really like her eyes. but i guess i'll be alone at all these things at a grimes general lmao. but i do like grimes as well, anyway, just not as much
>>
>>69294373
you aren't satisfied with that "joke" either, I know, go ahead and try another
>>
>>69294406
Say what you will, but CRJ's shtick gets old pretty fast. Almost all her songs sound about the same, and they're not even original, but more like a derivative version of Taylor Swift's 1989. Her music is entertaining, I can't deny that, but without staying power. On the other hand, Art Angels sounds like nothing else and it's still catchy as fuck after countless plays.

We'll see at the end of the decade which album will be more fondly remembered, Art Angels or Emotion. I bet my money on the former.

>but anyway, to decide who is catchier is really hard and it'll just be a matter of personal preference i guess.
Actually music is general is a matter of personal preference.
>>
>>69294260
heartbeats was the only one that really came close but thank you for the effort

grimes is girlsfantasyaboutbeingtalentedandrich core for the most part ive decided

>Not having sympathy for the practical performance concerns of multi-instrumentalists who perform under strobe lights...
>>
>>69294202
To each his/her own. That's the precise reason why I like Grimes - because she takes sounds from standard pop music (among many other genres) and then rearranges them to function in very non-standard ways.

If I was in love with standard (contemporary) pop music I would probably love CRJ's music. However, since I happen to actively dislike it, I love Grimes'.
>>
>>69296829
It's not even that. It's just that there are often so many levels of subversion involved in ANY aspect of the Grimes project (something that bleeds over into the nature of the fan base) that only really smart people can truly keep up with it. Nobody likes parties where they aren't smart/well-informed enough to get the jokes.

Imo it's a major part of why Grimes and her art tend to be such polarizing forces. Because the very act of expressing dislike for her tends to make people look/feel stupid.
>>
>>69294150
I don't get why you don't like her guitar playing. She doesn't play anything complicated, but what she plays is really effective. Think about her as a punk guitarist.

These threads are populated by a bunch of unashamedly newfaggot redditors who unironicly use emoticons like :D and make pokemon references. Grimes was one of the most hated artists around here for years because of her shitty music and annoying in yo' face SJW personality. She's called us disgusting on Twitter before. She doesn't like us and we don't like her. And to act like there was some kind of population of grimes fans lurking here the whole time is just a fucking joke, enjoying grimes is like, MILES away from something that this board, generally speaking, would do. And yeah yeah I know "/mu/ isnt hivemind" blah blah blah but to take it to the point where you think we need to have general threads for a tumblrcore artist that most of us have hated for years? I'm sorry but that's the line. It's an affront to anyone who gives two quarters of a shit about this board.

The only thing I can think of that has been close to the level of cancer as grimes threads was Lazare, and considering he was a synth pop fan I wouldnt be suprised if he was behind this shit 2bh

>enjoying grimes is like, MILES away from something that this board, generally speaking, would do
That's right. Enjoying good music (Grimes) for a change, and not the same dull meme music promoted by moo. This board isn't about good music, but about dick measuring contests (everyone claims to be patrician), memes and the same 50-100 albums posted every single day. Did I mention memes? Stop pretending this board was good.

>we need to have general threads for a tumblrcore artist that most of us have hated for years
Speak for yourself, asshole. Few hateful autists != most of us. Even assuming she was hated before, now things changed. Do you really expect a hugely critically acclaimed artist (and a nice and interesting person too) to be hated by most of /mu/? You must be seriously delusional, pal.

And one more thing, you stupid Grimeshater: your hate means nothing in the grand scheme of things. The consensus is clear: her music is considered great. I'm afraid you have to deal with it.

Just found that in the comments: http://web.archive.org/web/20130803013420/http://actuallygrimes.tumblr.com/post/56990576819/i-apologize-in-advance-but-there-will-be-swearing-in I've never seen Grimes so pissed off before.

i apologize in advance, but there will be swearing in this post

http://www.stereogum.com/1421372/deconstructing-dead-girlfriends-mansplaining-and-when-being-an-ally-goes-wrong/top-stories/

ok, god damnit. First of all — these ‘stereogum takedowns’ are really stupid. Like, one of these happened to me when Visions first came out. Not only was it terrible journalism, but it was fucking sexist (suggesting that I’m not as admirable as my peers because I don’t "tap into [my] womanhood and sexuality as a source of power." Um

So first of all assholes, you have NO fucking right the be standing on a feminist pedestal. Your article about me in this series based it’s criticism on attacking my refusal to sexualize myself which is so immensely fucked like… i dont think i need to explain why it’s fucked.

1/2
>>
>>69305165
2/2

Secondly, you can’t just rip apart an artist because you “feel" like his song is about something it’s not about. You even acknowledge that there is no basis in fact for assuming that “On fraternity" is written from a female perspective or about a female experience.

It doesn’t come close to “mansplaining". I live with the fucking person who wrote this song, and I can assure you I’ve never heard him mansplain anything. This song is about being JAMES and the way that JAMES feels and you have no right or reason to attack him. fucking surfer blood doesn’t even get it this bad

James doesn’t have a publicist or a label or money or an agenda. He’s making art and he’s releasing it. I’m so tired of people jumping on every possible controversy they can conjure because they need web traffic. We don’t make art because we want to be in tabloids, you probably didn’t start an indie music blog beccause you wanted to make tabloids

god damn it ive been trying to stay out of this but its gotten completely out of hand and with no basis in fact whatsoever

FACT CHECKING : its in ur job description
>>
>>69302290
Lol am sorely tempted to drag out my original response to this from before it became a copypasta. Although, rereading it now, the whole thing sounds so incredibly cringe-worthy that I think just letting it stand here on its own (with this slight bit of meta-commentary) is far more effective.
>>
>>69305165
>>69305197
Yeah it's the tidbits like this (I've stumbled on this entry of hers before btw) which just cause me to chuckle whenever stupid/uniformed people come along and start trying to stereotype her as some sort of misandristic SJW type.
>>
>tellmethereismorethanthis asked: Claire, Are you ever scared of anything? I feel too scared to follow my dreams and i get so down about it all and i look at someone like you who appears fearless and i wonder if you ever get rattled? and if so, how do you overcome that in order to live the life you want to live?
>
>This is the only question im gonna answer here. I think I need to turn off the Q/A thing because I’ve been getting like, rape threats and stuff lol. i guess that’s not funny. And I guess it sort of leads directly into my answer to this question:
>
>which is yes, I get scared a lot and people can be incredibly cruel. Generally, other people are the biggest barrier between you and whatever it is your want to do.
>
>sometimes I completely break down. there is a ton of pressure on me all the time, and a lot of people really hate me and are certainly not meek about letting me know that. If you decide to do something and it’s different from what other people are doing, you will probably make some people very angry and words can be devastating. Furthermore, it’s obviously risky to do something that isn’t for sure going to pay out. But like, if you never do it, then you’ll always wonder what would have happened if you did.
>
[continued]
>>
>>69309122
>I lost my family (temporarily), the relationship i had been in for three years, and a lot of my friends because I decided to put my art first. At the beginning I toured with a tent because I was playing shows for like, ten people and not getting paid, so we had no where to sleep. Granted, this was incredibly fun but sometimes it got really dark. Especially if you’ve abandoned everything else in your life to the point where if it doesn’t work, you’ll have lost everything.
>
>I mean, I think Grimes succeeded because I had to discard everything else in my life in order to do it. I was so fucking desperate to make it work, I don’t think I could have possibly allowed it to fail. I can’t stress how powerful the human mind is. If you want something bad enough, you can probably find a way to make it work.
>
>But the way I see it is that very few people on the planet have the opportunity to even follow their dreams at all. Most people live in poverty, or in communities where the repercussions for behaving how they want are a lot worse than just people talking shit. If doing what you want is an option for you, you should do it, because your one of the few lucky people who can. And even if you fail, you will be in a better position than if you’d never tried. The competition probably isn’t that crazy. Most people are too scared to even try. Bad things can happen, but every horrible thing that has ever happened to me has added integrity to my art and improved my understanding of the human race.
>
>I don’t see the point of living if you’re aren’t doing the thing you love. Sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do obviously, but if it’s for your family, or for your passion, then it’s worth it. You are never making a bad decision if it is the decision that makes you happy, so if not following your dreams gets you down, then you should probably try to find a way to make it work.

she seems so tired of doing shows now

You would too if you'd just spent more than a year on tour...

shes too tall and lanky. good thing her face makes up for it
>>
>>69322465
She's isn't that tall, but quite... narrow. That makes her to appear taller than she is. But IMO she's perfect as she is from the "factory".

Why didn't Grimes take advantage of Oblivion and Genesis's popularity in 2012 to launch herself into pop stardom? At least she could've released more singles.
>>
>>69323399
it's not her aim
>>
>>69323399
Because doing so would've necessitated selling out (aka having to rely on the creative input of others) in order to upscale the Grimes project sufficiently during such a short span of time. She decided not to do it for creative reasons. The rest is history.
>>
>>69323521
Hasn't she said herself that she wants to be a pop star?
>>69323614
But she's made tons of videos for Art Angels. She could've just made one of her DIY videos for one of the songs.
>>
>>69323707
>Hasn't she said herself that she wants to be a pop star?
The weirdest popstar.
>>
>>69323707
>But she's made tons of videos for Art Angels.
So? Grimes is an audio-visual project.
>>
>>69323787
Why only two for Visions?
>>
>>69323871
She did one for Nightmusic too.

>Hasn't she said herself that she wants to be a pop star?
A self-made one, yes. Claire Boucher is very obviously an architecture/engineering-focused type of person. Grimes is a giant construction project to her, the only consistent element of which is her own role as creative mastermind.
>>
>>69323871
And by the way, the Be a Body video was cancelled. She released only some snapshots: http://grimes-claireboucher.tumblr.com/post/20918620365/grimestyle-be-a-body-video-previews-omfffffg
>>
>>69323979
Why was it cancelled?
>>
>>69323997
I have no idea. Grimes changes her mind all the time.
>>
>>69323871
Probably because of how focused she was on touring at the time (remember - this was the era of her doing things like playing 56 tiny shows over the course of 57 days because her management at the time wasn't particularly smart.)
>>
Is it me or Nightmusic sounds a little like Ladytron?

Afaik everything concrete there is to know about the never-released Be A Body music video.

>The video for [Visions’] “Be a Body” is a Ballet Militia video.
http://filtermagazine.com/index.php/exclusives/entry/filter_48_en_pointe_the_brutal_beautiful_art_of_grimes/

>For Be A Body I went back to Vancouver and I got two ballerina friends from there to come. They’re really well trained and covered in tattoos. The only costs for that were the two hundred dollars we spent on lights. We went and shot everyone in pitch black using straight-on lights, so it’s these incredible, tattooed bodies moving in the pitch black. Quite rave.

>Be a Body Video stills
>this might never see the light of day cuz it’s a pre-4ad video (budget of $136!) ;)
>am thinking of using the footage for an elite gymnastics video? have to work it out with everyone else involved

What non-Grimes songs has she been featured in? Or helped?

>>

>>
>>69326487
Like in production or mixing.
>>
yes its her cat named Vanigarian
>>
>>69327575
You mean Voignamir (technically "War and Peace" phonetically translated from Russian to English as a single word.)

>IF: What do you think about the explosion that happened with Grimes and her music?
>MC: It’s exciting, obviously, and is the kind of thing we hope will happen to everybody. It’s what we strive for. I’ve always been a huge fan of hers. She’s an incredibly hard worker. I lived with her for two or three years. She was constantly working. If she wasn’t recording she was planning her live set. If she wasn’t doing that she was drawing her album artwork or she was planning a music video and she was non-stop. It was funny because we had completely opposing schedules so I would get up and get ready to go to office while she was finishing up a song and planning to go to bed in a couple hours. So we’d interact in the morning when I was groggy and getting up and she was sleepy and almost ready for bed. It would be 9am and she’d be showing me her new songs. She deserves all the attention and she’s one of the most genuine people I know. She’s so smart and honest. Sometimes when I read her interviews I’m like ‘Why would you admit to this?” but she’s really just blunt in the best of ways which is really so endearing. So anything she’s getting she deserves 100%.

When was the Golden Age of Grimesposting?
>>
>>69328271
...Right now?
>>
>>69328060
I know she gets fetishized a lot on this site but genuinely she's one of my biggest inspirations
Sometimes when I feel like I may be aiming to high, I like to remember when I met her live
In some moments, when she dropped the facade, I could see her as she normally is. And Jesus Christ she was just so "normal", so down to earth and humble. She really eclipses Kanye when she's in character, but when she's not she seems no different than you and me. Granted, she is rich and has a shitload of talent. But if she could make it, we all can.
>>
>>69329824
What does Kanye have to do with Grimes?
>>
>>69329853
I meant she "eclipsed" him in terms of flamboyance and show when she is in the grimes' character
but when she is not, she seems very human

i write like shit because english is not my first language and im already kind of sleepy tb-h

Her hair is dark again (natural). You confused her with someone else. Or more likely, you invented the whole thing.
