I'm really disappointed into what The Weeknd is becoming. All the songs lately are so poppy, just trying to please a bigger majority of people. His music was so much better during trilogy and kiss land when it was darker about the drugs and hoes. Wish he would have stayed true to how his music started.

Kissland was the album where The Weeknd was trying to bring that dark/ambient R&B to the mainstream. Unfortunately it didn't work just right. Which is a shame because I loved that album. I feel like if he gave it one more go he would've succeeded. But he decided to take the easy way to popstardom. Kind of a shame, and so far on Starboy he's continuing what he did with Beauty Behind the Madness. Take that as you will.

My ranking of this album after 1 full listen:
Trilogy > BBTM > Kiss Land = Starboy

MANY songs sound too similar; it has the Views problem of too many songs. There's also pretty much no rnb on this, all pop. The only songs I would call rnb would be All I Know and Die For You, but that's a huge reach. The Old Weeknd doesn't exist here at all

Ever since Trilogy, while many have seen his music becoming more evolved, I’ve heard it trending more monochrome and monolithic and impenetrable, a vast, palatial swirl of sumptuously familiar pop-R&B sounds tweaked a bit here and there. His falsetto seems less creepily distinctive, less vampiric (to nod to Simon) – hence all the justifiable Michael Jackson comparisons. The scenarios of the songs strike me as less visually memorable, more like generic romantic pop-star vignettes. We moved from skeevy rented rooms to cathedrals and stadiums. I know I’m supposed to admire his maturation away from those temporal tales of drug-sodden, near-suicidal misogyny, but mostly I hear that evolution as the necessary compromise of a guy who wanted to be a superstar more than he wanted to be an eccentric mid-level artist. Early on, his boastfulness was stuffed with narcotic self-loathing (which in its naked openness felt unusual for such polished-sounding R&B), and which was also intriguing (and more easy for me to relate to, I suppose, as a self-loathing once-druggie who has spent time in skeevy rented rooms), but now the comfortable multi-car boastfulness seems just so typical. He’s an extremely talented guy, whom I’m still interested in, but I can’t share the group’s excitement for this track. It feels luxurious and performative. He’s now a guy who’s welcoming us to a tour of his manse, swooning spectacularly, and then returning to his boudoir where Drake’s accountant is giving him the 10 a.m. investment update. And Daft Punk, well, they’re lurking around somewhere, probably in the studio, checking serial numbers.

Welp I got up to track 11 and that's when I started jumping through the tracks. I just stopped caring. I did not like what I was listening to.

Starboy is the only good song

There's like 2 solid songs on this new album. 1 of them being the interlude by Lana Del Rey. I liked True Colors.

Only his first 3 albums/mixtapes are good. The rest is pretty much horrible aside from some songs here and there. Even with Beauty Behind The Madness, the unreleased version of Girls Born In The 90s is far better than the re-done, re-named version on the album.

As for "Starboy" - too much generic fucking trap drums that are disgustingly repetitive. His choice to use auto-tune at times is awful too. Any song with the aforementioned is automatic shit to me.

Like others have mentioned: House Of Balloons/2011 era Weeknd is the only good Weeknd.

Solid album. Really thankful he released this. I really feel it. It's really groovy, I guess, for lack of a better word. Really refreshing compared to the regular bullshit I'm used to hearing. Maybe I'm just getting bored of Drake. Like... Sidewalks, Party Monster, and Die For You for example... They sound so good. It's crazy.

I got exactly what I expected to get. As soon as I saw that eight of the songs were explicit out of eighteen, I knew what to expect. Half of those, if that, are the hard hitting ones.

It's similar to Views in that respect. Hype, Grammys, and Pop Style were the only hard hitting aggressive songs on there. The rest was calm and chill. We get that here too, but the album isn't as calm and "singy" as Views is.

My favorite album this year. Views was great, but it played more like a movie. Not much replay value for me, but the initial listen was great. Hype was my most played song from it, by far, followed by Pop Style. This albums has MUCH more replay value. The whole album has replay value. The only shitty thing in it is the pointless interlude, but whatever it's an interlude... And Kendrick Lamar... Why? The fuck is he doing... I would have much rather wanted a second verse from The Weeknd. Motherfucker, I knew this would happen. As soon as I heard it on MANIA I knew Kendrick's faggot ass would take up the other half of the song. What a waste.

BBTM was number one last year doing about half a million. That was when you could argue that he wasn't that popular. And that album was sold from the hype of the singles.

Starboy came out a month ago and did a lot better in a month than the other two songs above it did in a year. Big difference from last year and an even bigger difference from three years ago.

He's one of the most famous artists right now, I don't know what you're talking about underground. He's been working with major artists from the start. He even made, arguably, most of Take Care for Drake which is arguably "his" best album.

He's third in the world on Spotify. Drake is number one, but not by much and Starboy could give him that spot.

I know it's not him but I'm really digging the production on this album, really synthy 80s dark funk feel. It pains me to see the Trilogy Weeknd fade away but hopefully he can carve out a place in pop music that is at least somewhat original in comparison to most of the shit we see today.
