She's a talented hack, dude.

>Teenage Boucher’s obsessions ranged from space travel, to the twelfth-century composer Abbess Hildegard von Bingen, to Russian existentialist lit. She crushed so hard on Dostoyevsky that she even flew to St. Petersburg to attend an intensive Russian immersion.

>But as with Grimes’ music, Boucher preferred autodidactism. Garossino recalls hearing Boucher teach one of Chopin’s nocturnes to herself, bar by bar. But only through the wall—at the time, Boucher had too much stage fright to even play the piano in front of her mother.

>“Something that people don't understand about Claire is her searing intellect and focus,” Garossino said. “Whenever you think you've figured her out, she's already three moves ahead. Things are never what they seem.”

>Her mother related how at McGill, the wunderkind wanted to take physics, but couldn’t stand introductory courses. Instead, Boucher entered higher-level classes and studied the prerequisite material at the same time. “She would nearly kill herself studying—surviving on almost no sleep for weeks at a time.”

>“And that's how she makes music today. In long, solitary blasts of blistering intensity.”

>Interviewer: What young artists do you feel an affinity with? I heard you're a Kendrick fan.
>Joanna Newsom: I loved the latest Bjork album, I'm excited about the idea of Grimes. I haven't wrapped my head around the record. I find her so compelling and so unlike anybody else and so incredibly talented, skilled, and fun. I love her. I met her in LA a few months ago, she told me something along the lines of, "I grew up listening to your music". I will say, it made me feel really old for about five minutes, then it made me feel really happy. I was like well, I guess I'm old now, but that's okay because this awesome and amazing young musician likes my music and said that it was special to her when she was younger, so that's great.
https://i-d.vice.com/en_au/article/life-after-whimsy-joanna-newsom-is-no-ethereal-creature

>I’m super excited that Grimes is getting so much attention for her amazing production too because she’s super, super talented. And she does everything! She produces completely on her own.
http://www.spin.com/2015/11/joanna-newsom-divers-interview/

>In terms of people today, as I said, I’m a little out of the loop, but I have noticed I’m really excited by the way that Grimes frames herself, and seems utterly disinterested in her own beauty, which is really exciting to me. Sometimes it’s useful for an idea, and then other times it’s not useful for an idea, and she seems unaffected either way. I like her music as well, and I like what she says.

Nah, he's actually pretty talented, he's just a massive sellout.
>>
It's honestly really lame to call him that, he's one of those musicians that deserves way more praise than he's ever gotten, which I know is a lot to begin with. John Frusciante is soulful to the max and one of the few guitarists that took what Hendrix was doing and ran with it, and honestly understood it. The only thing I didn't like about him was when he shaved his head in 2006

>Do you think people deserve grief? Do you give people grief when they deserve it? Me, I hope to relieve people of their grief. For a long time I had this theory: the impossibility of a female Kurt Cobain. What he represents, leaning against the system and yet supported by consumers, there was no woman in the world that could command the masses so utterly. The music industry wouldn't let her. This thing I've been stewing about since I saw Grimes play to 20 people in 2011, and started reading her Tumblr, and then really starting feeling when "Oblivion" came out, is that Claire is the closest thing we have to a female Kurt Cobain, smart enough to understand the system but righteous enough to wall-jump away from it. But also, interestingly, what an inversion her approach is to Kurt's. His pose was anti-establishment, her pose is post-structural. He was rigorous, she is always looking outward, game for genre-experimentation and hilarity. I feel like even if I don't like her music, and I do so far, I will always feel like she's several steps ahead of me, several books ahead of me, and that makes me feel really fucking good. Anyone who gives her grief about anything can kick rocks as far as I'm concerned.

I love his work with RHCP even though the band can be a bit cheesy at times. However, Just based on his solo stuff John is fucking godtier.

>>69268292
> His technique is very sloppy
John plays pretty fucking cleanly, the dude is a pretty technical and studied musician. His phrasing really separates him from a shitload of "good" guitarists who play boring solos.

Not trying to sound like a john fanboy but i dont get the hate
>>
>>69269232
Really. On any of their albums, the band is tight as fuck. That's one thing about OHM which feels like such a letdown...Dave just wasn't on the same page with the other guys and you can hear it.
>>
>>69262198
>>69263045

listen to Niandra Lades without any brakes and I don't think anyone can call him a talentless hack
>>
>>69269232
>John plays pretty fucking cleanly, the dude is a pretty technical and studied musician. His phrasing really separates him from a shitload of "good" guitarists who play boring solos

That's typically a problem with metal bands; they often don't have a good sense of dynamics and end up playing sterile-feeling noodlefests.
>>
You guys keep mentioning Niandra Lades as if From the Sounds Inside isn't his best album as a whole.
>>
>>69269473
Eh? Metallica had a very good sense of dynamics on the classic albums.

He's been grinding my jimmies for years. Totally lifted Ives' Unanswered Question on Thin Red Line and Ives wasn't even credited, pays a team of people to ghost compose for him, "collaborates" with other composers because he's more interested in more contracts than doing the work itself, half of his movie themes sound exactly the same, and HOLY FUCK his opening theme for The Critic is a blatant rip off of Gershwin. BLATANT

The Critic:

Now if only he'd play a real note just once. And i mean that. John? What zappa and don said, john.
>>
>>69262149
He had thousands of dollar's worth of skin grafts to repair damage from acute heroin use. This was back in the mid-nineties, before he rejoined RHCP and was living alone in a crack house cross-dressing and releasing shitty avant garde albums.
>>
>>69263479
Fuck no. He's a brilliant songwriter.
>>
I'm actually pretty good at hack <is also a lumberjack>
>>
Look at Woodstock 99 or other gigs from the 1999 tour. He wore long sleeved shirts on stage because his body was just all destroyed from heroin.
>>
>>69268523
>>69262230
>yes compared to bjork and kate bush
You wot? Grimes did everything in her music, unlike Bjork & Kate Bush. That takes a big talent to do it.

>inb4 Bjork & Kate Bush did objectively better music, when music taste is actually subjective
>>

this. just read up on it, was from coke and heroin, not a house fire.
