I think you're exaggerating Mahler's influence there. All of the SVS idolized Mahler, sure, but only Berg absorbed that influence on such a large scale (and Berg loved breaking Schoenberg's rules). Schoenberg always followed Brahms more closely, and, some would argue (Schoenberg himself certainly did), that much of his music is established on older traditions, from the classical era and especially the renaissance era.

Even if Mahler didn't encourage Schoenberg, things would have likely gone the same way. Schoenberg very rarely bended to anyone's will but his own. Even to friends.

I'm thinking about enrolling on a piano performance and theory/composition degree, but I honestly have no sympathy for most contemporary movements.

Barda is barely recorded, but when he is, it's usually pretty great. And his interpretations can be quite different.

Tiegerman lived out his days in Egypt, and, as such, the few recordings he made are in absolutely piss-poor quality. Mostly private/broadcast recordings made on shoddy equipment. Interesting playing, though.
