I sampled a pokemon soundtrack for a trap beat, I think it's pretty lame https://clyp.it/ljfn5fwu
>>
>>69210783
Its even worse when you don't have time to actually sit down and work on the track. So you go days thinking about it and what to add just to forget it all when you finally have that one night of producing.
>>
>>69213917
You can't really hear the high part of the track. You need to boost your sample and probs cut out some of the harsher / more resonant frequencies.
>>
This might be a far fetch but, if you had to record an upright piano, but don't have any mics but only your phone, how would you record it to give the best possible sound?

Because that's my situation now, phone and no mics. I just want to record it for sketching down ideas, but I want it to be the best possible quality.
>>
Not sure if this is a /prod/ question, but I dunno where else to ask.

What are the options for standalone beatboxes? like MPCs or any clones, that don't need to be plugged into a PC to work?

just route DAW1/2 to the headphones
>>
>>69222041
it should still just be the default lol
>>
>>69222373
I think it is, but since you can store the settings to hardware and he bought it used I think the previous owner changed it
>>
>>69222065
Okay, I think I figured it out kind of. I got it to play through the headphone jack by setting a track's individual output to output 7/8 of my interface. These outputs are the headphone outputs, however, if I switch the output of a track to the default stereo out, it will only play through the main outputs (1 and 2) for monitors. Can I not have the stereo out playing through both 1/2 and 7/8 so that I can just control what I want to hear with the knobs on the front of the interface like you normally would?
>>
>>69222417
you can, read the manual

Like a noise sweep or something else that rises in pitch/frequency. It adds tension to your build-up.

I bought some mics like 3 weeks ago and they were apparently due to ship in 7-10 days. Now they're showing as backordered until at least early Dec. I have a feeling I'm never gonna get'em.

Why do bad things only happen to me anons?
>>
>>69224591
Wait until early dec then.

I've ordered a really unique synth module that said it was ready to ship I placed an order and after two weeks of no info, I emailed the guy. Supposedly the circuit was just made and it needed a couple of weeks of "burn in" time. Two weeks later I got the module.

Also, I'm not sure if he even makes the module anymore, I never hear about people getting his module.

>>69225049
Well that's odd. I bought from a big retailer (B&H) so this sorta thing is unusual.

What happened was I bought a pair at the beginning of Nov that had a couple minor issues, so before the return period was up I returned them for exchange. And that's when the trouble started. I apprently had bought the last pair in the store, and I got an email saying they were being exchanged and would be shipped soon. Then they said they were out of stock and were on special order for two weeks, and now that changed to back-ordered and will ship Dec 5th. I have a feeling by Dec 5th it'll be pushed-off again. These mics are currently out of stock at every major retailer (Adorama, Amazon, Sweetwater) so I'm getting nervous that they're discontinued.

Also I'm moving overseas in Jan and I was planning on taking these with me.

They're a matched pair of Studio Projects C4s. Their specs compare very closely with the $900 Rode NT55s but are like 2/5 the price. From the couple days I used them they really are stunning

Yeah they have pretty heroic specs, they just suffer a bit from the ol' cheap(er) build quality issue so you have to baby them. I had been using a pair of MXL 603s though which are significantly chintzier and I've taken good care of those for a couple years now.

I would love to get a set of the Oktavas. Their black & white specs aren't really better but I bet I wouldn't have any issues with humidity and build quality like with the MXLs or SPs.

Pic related - what a set! $750.

What do you use them for good anon?
>>
>>69227659
>What do you use them for good anon?
Lots!

Piano, violin, cymbals, even voice. It's really hard to say what I don't use them for. Amps are all I can think of.
>>
>>69226903
Thanks for the feedback! I'll experiment around a bit with the just entirely leaving some notes out then. Its always hard in dance music to take a lead melody and change it without changing the overall feeling or tone.

Also in terms of song structure, would you think it would be a good idea to continue the chorus on after that or move into a breakdown? Usually I think dance songs repeat the chorus twice on the second round through, but if you didnt think it was established enough then maybe I ought to try something new.
>>
>>69227861
I bet they'll work noice on amps †bh. They can handle decent enough SPL and aren't crazy sensitive so as to automatically clip into the preamp! What capsules do you have for them?
>>
>>69227968
>What capsules do you have for them?
Everything in this pic >>69227659
Except those clips. Plus mine are black.

I'm not afraid of miking an amp for this, just haven't had the opportunity yet.
>>
>>69227879
Nah I'm thinking it's actually fairly well established but yeah, some kind of breakdown but not the kind that totally drops the drums and stuff... just a different section that you can meander through for a bit and then crash back into the chorus. I think there should be a 3rd section as well, later on toward the end, that secretly works perfectly OVER the chorus, so by the finale you can have both layered on top of each other playing at the same time. Doesn't even have to line-up in terms of bars/beats, but the A (chorus) section could be a repeating 4 or 8 bars while the C ("other") section could be a repeating 3 or 5 bars, but on top of each other they should mesh like magic

It's repetitive in the bad way. That high melody beep boop. Try playing with it, give it some movement through the song. Maybe blend it with another High instrument playing same notes. Make it appear, and disappear without never stealing the main beep boop.

You need some frills.
>>
>>69231498

It's already solid. I'd say more body to the kick. And EQ the bass in some notes. Make that bass a bit bigger in sub (subtle) and put like minus 1 to 3 db on certain mid notes, so it's still present without eating to much of the mix.

Keep up the good work senpai,
You've nailed the 80's sound with grimey percussion
You just need to explore the world of progression
My best advice I can give you is to sit there, analyse one of your favourite tracks and explore how elements come in at what time, how a melody will evolve over the track, how the chorus sounds ect,
Good work!

As far as free compressors go, Molot, Kotelnikov, Limiter No6, and the compressors made by this guy "Variety of Sound" are all really good. I also use the Reaper compressor often, you can download all the Reaper effects as VSTs. The compressor is nice and clean, and can do massive gain reduction which is useful for parallel compression.

For paid compressors, I like The Glue, Pro-C...I often use saturation on stuff as well which gives a subtle compression. I like U-he Satin for tape saturation.

i think it's neat. whatever you're using for the hi-hat sample is making my skull ring though. it needs a tiny tiny subliminal reverb (or just early reflections) on it and maybe a touch of EQ. you could change the sample altogether but it hink it's pretty cool sounding, just slightly too dry and sharp.

it reminds me of lazy summer days and hot pavement, and all the boys flirting and chasing the neighborhood girls in the afternoon. all while you're secretly a homo and could only dream of getting out, getting anywhere.

So I decided to buy it and have been really happy with it. 10/10 would recommend.

Still only look at the software when naming projects and samples, pretty much everything else can be done on the actual Maschine

Is anyone able to identify the disco/funk sample in this clip?
https://clyp.it/eina54mj

It's an unfinished track that a guy sent me years ago, he refused to tell me where the sample was from and I've long since lost touch with him and forgotten his name.

I want to find the sample and remake the track for myself, the one I have is far too low quality to do anything with.
Shazam doesn't identify anything. All I have is the title, "love to meet her"

>it reminds me of lazy summer days and hot pavement, and all the boys flirting and chasing the neighborhood girls in the afternoon. all while you're secretly a homo and could only dream of getting out, getting anywhere
damn that's some poetic shit

I have a dreadbox Erebus I've sat on for a while and am debating whether I should sell it (as my dreams of a live-action analog method of composition bit the dust over a year of inactivity, resulting in gradual sale of the equipment), or dabble with it and save up for a mother 32 and drumbrute. Any advice? I've tried to work in-the-box with Reason but I can't seem to get non-shit results even with the patching possibilities of the software.

>>69243807
save, so you have more shit to fuck around with. trust me, anon, messing with 2-3 synths is worth it.
>>
Ive found a problem ive got with programming drums. ill make some weird shit and think it sounds good, then when i go back to it, it sounds like random noise the first couple times i play it then it sounds good again. how do i stop myself from thinking the random noise sounds good while im making it? i cant listen to the loop more than like 3 or 4 times before my brain finds a groove in it, and when i show the shit i make from people it apparently is just random noise shit.

>>69243807
unless you're dying for cash, like about to default on a loan or something, i say save it.

i save all my shit and it's enriching as hell. sometimes i go years between really using/fucking around with stuff, but then i pick it up again as a whole new person with a whole new attitude and it's great. guitars, mics, amps/preamps, etc. always glad i've resisted selling.

Yeah, but I'm often places I don't bring my computer, and I would rather lug one piece of kit around, rather then 2. I've played with the Maschine a bit, but also APC40 and Push, and honestly I feel more comfortable on the APC and Push anyway, so if was gonna buy something that needs a computer, I would probably buy the one of the others. Thanks anyway lad

>oh man he duznt even risers, he'll never maek dope bangerz liek me
>>
>>69244388
you have to understand that your perception of making a song is not exactly how it will sound in the context of someone elses perspective. i find you can be more accurate if you take frequent breaks. having a good reference track for the sake of comparing how the music sounds, mix-wise and compositionally helps.

this problem is super work-process oriented tho

Holy fucking shit I have not laughed so much at a /prod/ post ever.

Also glad to see the average_ableton_user.jpg I created months ago is still causing butthurt and being reposted to this day.

Ps FL is even gayer, anything but Reason is for fags.

Melodic death metal. I've never made my own music or done any producing. This is my first try. There's still some stuff i think i need to fix. But i wouldn't mind hearing from some guys with more experience

Better than 99% of clyps that are posted here. If this really is your first try, keep making music.

Thanks guys. This whole song started with that one outro riff and i would just brainstorm from there. And i started recording maybe a month or 2 ago. I only get to record when I'm off work and my parents aren't home (youngfag, still lives with parents.)

what's your recording chain? guitar > ????

amps and mics? pedal and DI? innaface?

I'm playing an ltd ec1000 into a 6505+, with a peavey 412 speaker (i cant afford a mesa yet.) Boss ns2 and mxr 10 band eq in the loop, and a tubescreamer and crybaby up front. I'm only using one e609 mic right on the center into a focusrite Scarlett solo interface.
