2002 is the latest that Korn could ever be considered on a peak.
They hit the biggest peak with Follow The Leader, and it was a slow decline from Issues, but after that it was clear that they really lost something, and it's been on a sharp decline ever since Take a Look in the Mirror hit the shelves.

That you're supposed to fall asleep while it plays.
That's literally it.
Same thing with the synth tracks in burzum's filosofem and hvis lyset tar oss.
It's supposed to mellow you out after an intense album as you drift to sleep and think about it.

The thing most of these artists don't get is that most people want to listen to their albums in other circumstances than before sleep.

Meshuggah was realistically the first proper Djent band. Though I'm not sure they even call themselves that.

The word Djent is an Onomatopoeia. It's the noise that the genre is about. Heavy chugging riffs, >>69207108 arbitrary time signature changes, as well as multi-layering rhythms and time signatures over each other in converging riff patterns. Perhaps similar to some of the more modern and abstract ideas in Jazz today. The goal is to sound heavy, and loud. Realistically, its technical death metal, because speed and rhythm is key. The objective might not always be to create a unique song thats catchy, but the only band which seems to have distinguished its releases is Meshuggah. Though thats still being kind. Because of all the culmination of things, djent often comes across as a pointless drone to the non-dedicated listener. I'm not versed on the history of Djent, but I think the original idea was a Metal Fantasy, where bands were just trying to out-brvtal each other. And trying to be more cvlt by being louder, and heavier, and just adding more and more layers of abstraction from traditional distorted guitar music.

But its developed and refined into a genre of music where melody is completely stripped and almost irrelevant. Rhythm, loudness, and complexity are the only objectives.

Also, its often mixed with industrial or electro music fonts. Not my taste, but its definitely a trend. Also, extra edge in vocals is also common.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNkQMtZAMAw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yej6n6DWWKw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTkuJ4vRQZM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnnXJSvj_KA

And finally, probably the epitome of djent, if it were possible to still it onto a liquid form. The intro to 'I' by Meshuggah. And the whole song too is pretty good. Though you can tell its just 3 songs stapled together. Some offcuts from Catch Thirtythree.

Nevermind I'm an idiot and just noticed I posted an outdated one. The upcoming one is Mgla, Nordvargr, Treha Sektori, Embrace of Thorns, Bestial Raids, and some more to be announced.
I know buying tickets before the full lineup is announced for anything other than shows/festivals you know are going to be good is dumb but I'd really like to check out Mgla, wondering if the others would make up for the ridiculous trip price.

credit where it's due: the man is brilliant at what he does, but I don't like his style, and I don't really want vocal virtuosos in my metal unless they're really good at blending in. I like each instrument to make a more-or-less equal contribution to the sound. I wanna listen to The Band as a whole, not the Dan Tompkins Backing Band, ya feel?

I guess it must be depressing as a metal fan to run into somebody that states they like metal and then spew out a bunch of melo death when you enjoy black or literally any other genre.

'Skilled' is fine, but virtuosos tend to show off for the sake of it, rather than asking whether it's what the song really needs. I like having a moment or two in a song where the vocalist really shines, but that needs to be balanced somehow, e.g. with long instrumentals, or sections where the vocals take a back seat. Intronaut is a shining example in my book of how to do vocals just right.

Candlemass made the best doom metal that ive ever heard, not that experienced with the genre tho. I guess listen to the song "crystal ball" or anything from the album it was from, vocals are kinda overdramatic imo but if you can get past that its a pretty good song.
