>What the fuck is sidechain compression and why do you use it?
>>
>>69167407
>sidechain compression
it's where you compress a signal but use something else to trigger the compression

a common use is audio ducking in radio, where the background volume lowers when the DJ is talking

another use is compressing a synth to a bass drum or some other rhythm to emphasize or eliminate sound to a specific rhythm
>>
>>69167407

Sidechaining is really useful. Learn it.
>>

I didn't master it yet and I'm still working out on the rest of the song. I only just started about 5 hours ago.

>>
>>69168440
I have no idea what compressing a signal means, is it compressing another insert or a track?
>>
>>69170442
Side-chaining is sound X makes sound Y quiet if X plays so the sound doesn't clash etc.
If you use FL open up the Limiter which is basically a compressor and look at the graphic you will see what is happening when a sound is compressed.
>>
>>69170442

Dude you really should do your research
>>
https://clyp.it/ovcjlh3h

I know its a bit repetitive.
>>
How do I get my drums to sound as crisp as this?
>>
>>69167407
I use sidechain compression for impacts that I want to cut through and vocals. Its important to learn, I spent years doing what it does manually in my tracks until I got into it.

Yet another reason producing on your own is fraught with difficulty. You need an advanced irl guy to mentor you and steer you clear of wrong practices.
>>
>>69170442
Eq'ing, Compressing and leveling are the basics of mixing... check some mixing learning video.

Is it bad practice to use 2-3 equalizers with different settings on the same track?

I just feel like it's much easier to get the sound I want when I can play around on several EQs.
>>
I've been producing for about 5 years now - but it seems progression is slow and I don't actually improve a lot.

I have a bad habit for rushing tracks. It's fun getting the idea out, but I quickly lose interest, finish it up and pump it out.

I've got some beats I'd like to go back to and improve but now I don't know where to start...

Prod got me feelsy guis what if I'm never good enough

Yes, it is, if you are working on the same freq's again its pointless and you are adding phase shift from each eq you are doing.
If you find it more comfortable useing 2 or 3 do it, but after that, try to get the changes you made by 3 eq's into 1.

no. take the classic sidechaining to the kick technique, for example. if you just eq'd out thelow end it wouldn't duck out in time with the kick and then it would be lacking low end, with sidechaining neither of those issues exist

Not all processors have a sidechain (key) input, but the other most common one is found on gates, where you can use one sound source to trigger the gate opening and letting another sound through - it used to get used a lot on early trance tunes to create stuttering pad and lead sounds. A MIDI-synced square-wave LFO would get you the same effect if you want a regularly-timed sound but the beauty of a sidechained gate is that you can create any rhythm you want as the trigger source.

>The Shamen used it, a lot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpjnzxtZ6Qg

It's also useful for tightening up basslines where you could gate the bass using a kick drum as the key input (trigger) so the bass will only be heard when the kick drum is being played.
>>

>>69178434

>>
>>69174463
a different take on sidechain compression is often used for delays on vocals or lead instruments - compress the wet-only delay channel with the clean signal as the detector input and use a long hold and release to duck the delays down to a background level while the singer's phrase and it automatically brings up the repeats in the breaks without spilling over
>>

Hello /prod/

I've been making all of my music using mostly nothing but audacity, since it's the only DAW I know and can use seamlessly, but I want to transition into something more extensive to make my music better. Any tips from transitioning to a new DAW you know nothing about?

I went from audacity to fl studio back in 2007, now theres a million tutorials on youtube. Its super easy to get in, but im still learning things. Workflow is really simple.

If you dont use midi pro tools is really good too, everything is let cluttered than fl, and the stock effects are nicer. Routing is more natural too.

The most recent pro tools ive used is 10, the midi is trash. I heard 12 is better for it.

I honestly don't know what to say. What's the point of posting a clyp if it's just a 4 bar loop? If you want people to listen to and enjoy your music, you have to tell a story, and a 4 bar loop gives very little insight into your abilities as a producer.

I'm going to be honest, both your clyps are boring. The second is mixed well, the first, not so much. I can understand that you may be beginners, but that is no excuse. The only way you are going to get better at producing is by writing full length songs, that have some structure and order.

Stories don't make sense if you start at chapter 12.

You might be right. The bloopy percussion is very nice, as well as how you're bringing it in and out of the mix. What I'd suggest is some more bass weight, either with an EQ or maybe layering a deep 808 under your bass.

Especially the string sample in the beginning makes me think of tokimonsta and other beat artists. I like it a lot but the drums could use a bit more life - maybe some more syncopation or a sample?

>>
>>69191873
Start with a lot of hip hop, listen to the beats (Dre, Premier etc), listen to the stuff those guys are sampling and inspired by (soul, funk, maybe some old Kraftwerk). One thing you can do is to try to write a soul/funk song, or just the hook, and then flip it (listen to Curtis Mayfield's Move On Up vs Kanye's Touch The Sky to hear how it's done).

I have been looking into buying some budget monitor speakers for quite some time now and almost all the sites I read highly recommend the KRK Rokit RP5 G3.

while I'm okay with shelling out the money for it, I'm curious how the other 'sizes' of this particular brand/model are. There's RP6, RP8... all that. They seem to be bigger and more expensive. Is there any particular reason why I would want those over the RP5?

I made 4 in one day 2 weekends ago. I made 2 yesterday, get about 1 a night in. Id be able to do more but i work 60 hours a week in the winter. Its about 3 hours for a beat. Most i could probably get done in a day is 6.

My process
Open random plug in
Play around on keys trying different pre sets
Eventually i find a part i start repeating
Tap tempo
Track midi
Start looping
Usually the drum part is pretty obvious to me, i used to be on drumline, put it in
Start adding instruments, melody, harmony chords, and ambiance.
Make tweaks to drums to mesh with any rhythms i came up with for the other instruments
Fit bass with kick and progression
Come up with structure.
Play back at least twice
Clean up changes, add parts where the sound is empty, sound effects, write bridge or whatever if needed.
Listen. Start adjusting pre sets to make them all fit together, change some or start from scratch all together.

Rough mix. I have the luxury of working with rappers, basically my deal is i make your beats i also record you. I do final mix with all the vocals recorded and match everything that way.

I play bass, guitar, and keys, sometimes i just improvise over a drum machine.
>>
