The best of anyone ever.
>>
Medium using Op1
>>
what kind of synthesis, son? analog, FM? the list goes on

Yes.
>>
>>69166426
All that shit and a Microbrute. Fucking why do you have a Microbrute
>>
>>69166426
how much does this shit cost

>>69166465
what's wrong with a microbrute
>>
Pretty good
>>
>>69166348
Terrible, but my synth collection is worth just under $10K
>>
not good but I have $3000 worth of synths in my room
>>
>>69166577
Are you me?
>>
>>69166465
neat waveshapers with CV, plus a filter I don't actually have rolled into one nead little keyboard with it's own sequencer. basically a modernized SH-101. I can even clock it with the beatstep pro
>>69166498
I get good deals a lot

why arent you good? spending that kind of money you better be good. Is it really that hard? if some emo lead singer can become a synth master it cant be that hard
>>
>>69166853
Half the purchase was just to invest in them. I bought one of them for $2250 a few years ago and now they're selling for $4500-5000.
>>
you guys are just waving your dicks around to mask your lack of talent

Ariel pink uses a cheap Casio (the one on loverboy cost 20 dollars IIRC) and makes great music

animal collective used cheap synths and vsts for MPP - each was roughly $399

there's literally no reason unless you're a richfag to buy a 5000 dollar moog
>>
>>69166912
>5000 dollar moog
lmao, not when I bought it
>>
>>69166912

pssht... you could use a free vst made by retard on a major release, it's the processing that counts... don't tell anyone, okay?
>>
>>69166912
Hi fidelity fags get autismal about depth of sound.
>>
>>69167006
There's a difference between old VCO synths and softsynths, if you're autistic you'll notice but they're probably 99.9% the same.
>>
>>69166912
>animal collective used cheap synths for mpp
>used a juno 60 and a sh-2
the fuck are you on about

if anybody still wants to talk about synthesis and not just dick waving, I'm still game
>>
>>69167081
When I was first getting into synths in late 2012 you could find a Juno 60 for $700-800, probably were half that when they did that album.

dx7ii FD or esq-1
>>

equally good and prone to battery failure
thankfully an easy fix

Prog rock was the only genre that used synths well, let's be honest
>>
>>69167179
i can get them for a similar price point so i was just looking for something to sway me either way.

i know fm is supposed to be scary but if i dropped money on it i'd force myself to learn it. the aftertouch and bi timbral shit are also a turn on.

the esq 1 looks good too though. my first synth was a microkorg so i'm looking for less of a menu dive.
>>
>>69167198
Fuck no, prog synths were cringe as hell for the most part.
>>
>>69167227
Nah, they programmed them just as well as any electronic artist and actually had technical ability to go along with it. I'd rather listen to Emerson show off like he's got something to prove than some musically illiterate kid who should probably stick to turntables
>>
>>69167198
i dont like the minimoog very much so i guess that's why i dont care
>>
>>69167198
of course not
keef's work is awesome, but there's much better synth music out there
Rush's synth work is pretty cringeworthy at times

>>69167213
the interface on the DX7 is a bit too cumbersome, plenty of plugins have made it easier to edit. that said, the colorful trashiness of those 12-bit DACs cant be ignored

however, having a really flexible synth with analog filters is handy for any bread and butter sounds you might want, whereas there's plenty of FM plugins out there
>>
>tfw only have a microKorg

wish i could afford more stuff

>all this dick flexing around subtractive synths

if you're any good there's not even anything to talk about there.

who /reaktor/ here?
>>
>>69167358
>mentions dick flexing
>the whole rest of the post
>>
ayy lmao
>>
what's the difference between synths with the same essential functionality and components made by different manufacturers?
apart from presets/programs I mean
>>
>>69167348
if the microkorg wasnt a pain in the ass to program it would be the best synth i have ever owned. it's like a ms2000 with shitty menu knobs
>>
What is the difference between subtractive and additive synthesis?
>>
>>69167348
Me too. Although I'm getting good use out of it
>>
>>69166909
>909
confirmed synth master
>>
>>69167476
Well comparing a couple of synths that are made today by DSI, the Prophet 6 uses curtis filters, whereas the OB-6 uses the unique Oberheim state variable filter that can blend between filter modes.

Moog filters use stages of paired transistors. Roland instead made filters based on OTAs and diodes.
>>
>>69167476
if we're talking identical features/options it's mostly in the filters imo... some envelopes are snappier too. most synths aren't identical though so
>>
>>69167479
>>69167541
Yeah, apart from the shit way of programming it, I like it. Haven't really regretted buying it.
>>
>>69166912
Dude have the sound of MPP is a fucking Eventide pitch effect that's super expensive
>>
>>69167638
That and the keys

Other than that it's pretty good
>>
>>69167501
Subtractive synthesis is like hacking off the portion of meat that you want from the bone. Additive synthesis is like taking several pieces of meat and combining them in a blender.
There's literally nothing wrong with this analogy.
>>
>>69167352
you can use patch cables, congratulations you have mastered synthesis
>>
>>69167479
literally just picked one up, very little experience with synths, mostly a guitar and bass player, whats some advice you could give about it?
>>
>>69167901
read the manual
>>
>>69167901
RTFM
>>
>>69167901
Not him, but like he said, programming is a pain in the ass

My advice that wouldn't take an explanation is to read the manual, and watch a tutorial or read something so that you can understand what it is that those knobs actually do.

I didn't when I first started, and found myself turning some knobs, finding that they weren't changing the sound in a way that I could immediately hear, decided to never use them, and made shitty synths for about three months until I actually decided to figure out how that shit actually worked
>>
i have an ms20 but i can't make any good sounds with it

hmmph
>>
>>69167957
do the thing like goldfrapp where you run a mike into the ESP and use that to control the pitch of the VCOs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8ZKgJLSoYI
>>
>>69167901
There are some good articles online about the principles of synthesis; take the time to learn about concepts like oscillators and such. You'll definitely have to put the work in if you want to be good at it because I've personally never met a guitarist who was good at synths, they usually don't put in the effort
