I'll do my best:

The top number of a time signature shows how many beats there are in a measure.

4 beats in a measure (you can count 1, 2, 3, 4 repeatedly along with the song)
>3/4
3 beats in a measure (same thing 1, 2, 3 repeated) 3/4 is often used for waltzes
>6/8
6 beats in a measure (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) which is very similar to 3/4 except it's written differently. My best guess is 3/4 is used for songs with a strong beat on 1 and weaker beats on 2 and 3, while in 6/8 there are two strong beats on 1 and 4 only.

The bottom number is used for notation purposes :

The bottom number is 4 which gives a quarter note the length of one beat. So 4 quarter notes make one measure, 8 eighth notes make one measure, and 1 whole note make one measure.(confusing to exemplify without sheet music)

the 8 in 6/8 gives an eighth note 1 beat, so 6 eighth notes make one measure, 3 quarter notes get one measure, and 1 dotted half note gets a measure.
