Psytrance evolved out of Goa trance. It has its own unique palette of sounds. Typically characterized by a pulsing bassline and an emphasis on layering, syncopation, and heavily psychedelic sound design. The really good stuff is designed to assist the listener in generating altered states of consciousness.

Shpongle is more a derivative of psytrance than actual psytrance. Some folks call it psybient or downtempo psy. Simon's Hallucinogen project is his real psytrance, which was actually very instrumental in establishing the sound of the genre. He made it dark and twisted.

And Infected Mushroom is definitely psytrance influenced, though later iterations of it, and their live performances, are just psychedelic cheese rock.
