beach life edition
I'm sure there is, but part of the reason I like shoegaze is that it's usually not very angsty and is more resigned and melancholy. If I want angsty I'll just listen to noisy punk
Burrrn - Blaze Down His Way Like the Space Show [mp3, 320]
The Depreciation Guild - In Her Gentle Jaws [mp3, 320]
>electronic shoegaze, chiptune, synth-pop, indie rock
Hey so what feelings does shoegaze best communicate?
Cause idk if this happy shit is the best
It feels like one of those old skool Windows Media Player visualizers (with threads of light) in your head.
I feel like shoegaze is usually overly romantic in tone in that lots of it consists of pushing rather commonplace feelings like melancholy, happiness, or young love into these large, overblown expressions
It's almost exaggeratedly dramatic in a way but that's also kinda the appeal for a lot of people
A few requests:
Is there some shoegaze that incorporates downtempo or (even better) house/techno beats? I know there are a couple of trip-hop fusion ones but I'm looking for something more atmospheric.
Also looking for some shoegaze or dream pop that's very dense and hazy but not really noisy (think Tim Hecker, Jefre Cantu Ledesma, that ballpark) but also still has drums, bass, and some semblance of structure to the songs. The only thing I've found so far is Belong's Common Era, which I love.
Here's an excellent album I've never seen discussed, thought I'd share it
You'll Never Get To Heaven - s/t
>ambient dream pop, tape music, downtempo
Check out Pyramids s/t, a lot of people hate it but it's one of my personal favorites, really swirling and thick soundscapes with blast beats underneath.
If you don't mind some (buried) screaming Cold Body Radiation has a very filled-out mix with some upbeat drumming and rhythms.
I've ha Pyramids downloaded forever but never listened to it, thanks
This is killer, I'm amazed I've never heard of this
This remidns me of Love Spirals Downwards (who are great), I'll check this one out too
i just released this dream pop/shoegaze ep thing do you guys dig? also if self promotion is frowned upon ill leave and never come back i apologize.
hey everyone I really like shoegaze but I find most of the best albums are very slow, sometimes sad. do you have any recommendations for some upbeat, fun, wall of sound stuff
thanks in advance
how come english bands were never able to tastefully mix upbeat rock music with shoegaze like this does? swervedriver is so fucking shit it's not even funny
Alright, Ulrich Schnauss's "Goodbye" was one of the best things I've heard in a while. The synth driven nature of it reminded me of early God Is An Astronaut (I know US came first but that was what came to mind), but more atmospheric. The beats and drum work was a very nice touch, gave it an unorthodox feel without being overtly "electronic" sounding. The lush sound of everything and the beautiful chord progressions were the best part.
Yeah I honestly never understood the hype behind Swervedriver
Japanese stuff's a good example, as there's honestly very little stuff that's pure shoegaze, per se
Most of the stuff that gets frequently tossed around here is always some kind of hybrid with another genre, be it metal, alt rock, noise rock, or Shibuya-kei
thanks for the advice and the listen! Ive made one big LP before but its just hard to get people to listen to so many tracks by someone they havent heard about before, but i really believe in the full length LP.
Underrated: Own A Car
Actual Best: Golden Stair
Yamaha SPX90 into a distorted tube amp, or clean for the glide guitar tones, Boss CE-2 for the dream pop Cocteau Twins sound. The Big Muff Russian is great for shoegaze fuzz.
This. It got super monotonous and I could only bring myself to listen to it once in its entirety.
What I'm working with is: mids focused guitar tone, fuzz, delay, reverb, chorus, harmonizer set to "detune", and other fun effects for extra texture (Slow-motion pedal, bass synth, wah, tremelo, pitch shifter, ring modulator) just fuck my tone up.
Lush are packing it in again
"It’s been a fantastic year for Lush. We received an incredible reception to our Blind Spot EP and the three beautiful career-spanning 4AD releases, sold out two Roundhouse shows, toured North America with great success and had a ball at our European festival appearances. It’s been wonderful to revisit our old music and to create new material.
However, it is now time for us to return to our families and homes, and bring our time together as a band to a close. We offer heartfelt thanks to all our fans – this reunion would never have happened without your overwhelming support and dedication.
We would like to take this opportunity to announce that, for our last-ever performance at Manchester Academy on November 25th, Emma, Miki and Justin will be joined by former 4AD label mate Michael Conroy, bass player for Modern English. As with Justin’s involvement, Michael playing with Lush has a special significance for us as he was a very close friend of Chris’s."
Vocaloid varies a lot by who uses it, just like any instrument. While I generally think Miku is one of the worst and is rarely used well with stuff like mikgazer the producers understand how to use her voice. The artificial nature makes it a lot more dreamy for me and really fits shoegaze. There's some stuff out there with other vocaloids that are really great. I wish people outside of the general vocaloid community would uses it more. In fact, Susumu Hirasawa used it before Miku was even a thing and kick started the craze (back when it was basically a commercial failure.)
I'll post some vocaloid shoegaze stuff in a little bit since I love sharing it. I even have an album of western shoegaze covers with miku for vocals done by a Japanese shoegaze band.
Always feel compelled to drop this in when someone mentions vocaloid and shoegaze
re;mo –nanairo
>shoegaze, vocaloid, fuzzy, dreamy
It's more dream pop than anything but check out Mojave 3–it's the band Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead started after Slowdive broke up and they're pretty Americana-influenced
How many people have listened to this so far? What do you think of it? Favorite tracks?
There's only like 3 good Chinese shoegaze albums and this is one of them. Would rec
Can share if the interest is there
I was actually going to post that album. It's really great and a hidden gem. Love Luka's voice on it.
Whoo is another good post-rock/shoegaze/math rock artist. Sometimes they do instrumentals only but often use vocaloid. Pretty shocked to see it used at the live show.
Wowaka isn't really shoegaze but has a few shoegaze songs. The first one I particularlly like especially since in the context of the album. It really took my by surprise when I first listened because I knew him for more pop based things. The second song is from one of his earlier albums.
Some other assorted groups
Now here's the weird one, the shoegaze outfit CRYV did an entire cover album with Miku. It's all mu-core tier shoegaze. MBV, Ride, Slowdive are all on here and other really good jems. The vocals are wonky because it's in engrish but I like how it sounds. Engrish always sounds nice to me in music like this.

My key is a Boss PowerStack pedal. Pretty bad for an overdrive pedal but it has this weird muffled sound that absolutely roars when you play it loud. I abuse delay and reverb too of course. DigiTech whammy (lucky enough to have the old 1st version) on the cleans for a weird chorusey sound.
tfw no mentally ill average looking shugazi gf
Does anyone else flail their arms around while moving their body to the groove of Cocteau Twins and pretending they are Liz Fraser singing or is that just me being autistic again
But it's great. Works a lot better than this one. Maybe we just add some more recent releases?
Panda Riot - Northern Automatic Music
Teenage Daydreams - False Hope Syndrome
>this dude is seriously fucked up i've seen some of his webcam videos on youtube
>but those riffs!
Flyying Colours - Mindfulness
>these guys finally released their LP and it's pretty good!
Destruction Unit - Negative Feedback Resistor
>hardcore punk, psychedelic
>not really shoegaze but it's drenched in effects and i dig it so w/e maybe you will too
not the original guy but I uploaded it
Forsaken Autumn - Whenere
>shoegaze, dream pop
I know this is Shibuya-Kei but some songs are pretty shoegaze/noise-pop inspired, anyone know stuff that kinda sounds like the shoegaze songs on this?
Yeah, i'm already familiar with this, though i'm always torn on the album. Some songs i really fucking love, some are kinda of boring and don't do much for me (the more ambient glitchy ones), but even these songs show how unique the band really is so i'm never sure if i love the album or if just think it's good.
36g - The Raingazer's Song [mp3, v0]
>vocaloid, electronic shoegaze, pop rock
no au futebol moderno
more like this? endroll is amazing
what are some entry level dream pop albums?
not sure if pic is related or not
Here's the rest of the vocaloid albums I've got since there seems to be some interest in them
Various Artists –Mikgazer Vol. 1
>shoegaze, vocaloid, j-rock, electronic
electripper –モノクロアンダーグラウンド (Monochrome Underground)
>shoegaze, vocaloid, electronic, japanese
wintermute –stray light
>shoegaze, vocaloid, electronic, japanese
もっふーP (Moff-P) –ハイカラレコード (Hi-Collar Record)
>shoegaze, vocaloid, j-rock, pop
もっふーP (Moff-P) –涙よ止まれ (Namida yo Tomare)
>shoegaze, vocaloid, j-rock, pop
Literally anything Cocteau Twins or Beach House
Got some more Chinese stuff for you guys.
Maybe someone will share it
There was a listen-along in one of these threads and it was well received
i believe the ACTUAL holy trinity of shugaze should be this, loveless, and v:d:c
I'm kind of in the same camp here where Nowhere and Souvlaki didn't really blow me away. I can see why people like Souvlaki though. Once I listened to it while lawn mowing in a light rain while feeling depressed. Shit was pretty cash.
maybe. it's hard to be good at what those records did though, like recreating a similar experience to V:D:C is probably very difficult quality-wise
Reminder that barlow is the only good recent lo fi shugazi act
They updated this one once, but took a bit out and changed it a bit. We need another update
so we all thought this was boring like i did right?
where is the gaze in blackgaze?
nah, they're kind of a neo-psych/dream pop act, The Besnard Lakes
Tremolo picking of fuzzed out open/maj7 chords mimics the same wall-of-sound effect lots of traditional shoegaze bands accomplish with reverb/delay/echo pedals
Throw in some blast beats, clean, wanky post-rock interludes and screaming and you've got most blackgaze
>tfw this is the only shugazi-related album to have any reply value this year
I want to make a list of Chinese/Taiwanese/Hong Kong Shoegaze bands.
Here is what I have so far:
Skip Skip Ben Ben
Boyz and Girl
The White Tulips
The Sound and The Fury
yourboyfriendsucks (don't really like these guys)
Any more I missed?
Here you go:
>hong kong shoegaze
I just bought this off a sketchy Chinese Website:
>chinese shoegaze, dream pop
Hope you guys enjoy it.
Fuguko, Boyz and Girl, and Forsaken Autumn are my favourite Chinese shoegaze bands
KUMCA - Sosil (소실) (2012) V0
>Korean, Shoegaze, Post-Rock
Vidulgi Ooyoo is another one
pretty sure Dear Eloise are Chinese.
I always thought I put them there but apparently not. I also forgot to put Manic Sheep on there. They are a pretty nice female fronted, English speaking, Taiwanese dream pop band.
Manic Sheep- Brooklyn:
If anyone wants their new album just ask.
Here you go friend.
Manic Sheep- Brooklyn
>taiwanese dream pop, shoegaze
Does anyone have this? A bunch of Chinese shoegaze bands came together and made a compilation, but the link on bandcamp is dead. It has a bunch of bands I would like to check out. It is called Sinogaze vol 1. if anyone has it and would like to share.
Like your typical guitar-driven rock music except with loads of reverb, extra fuzzy distortion and often many other effects slathered on to create riffs that are swirling walls of sound more than just typical chords. Vocals are often lower in the mix and can even be almost entirely obscured, the focus is on atmosphere more than clarity. Overlaps heavily with both dream pop and noise rock.
holy SHIT this is even better than I remember it being
What's /shugazi/ favourite "When I look at you"?
Various Artists - Blue Loveless [mp3, v0]
> shoegaze, tribute, cover, korea
bumping with an album
Mean Red Spiders - Starsandsons
>dream pop, shoegaze
I put little thought into clothing
have a "10 seconds in mspaint" mockup of what I'm currently wearing
slowdive were like /the/ romantic teen shoegaze band and they all dressed pretty normally
