I'd second this.
If anything he was a prime troll. People would go to his shows to hear some of the most talked about music and then he'd play a fucking cactus.
During performances of 4'33 he'd also tease the audience by lifting his hands as if to play the piano only to put them back intp his lap. Audiences were furious, booing, hissing, insulting, and even throwing chairs during his performances.

>Musical genius?
Nobody says this. He was a very creative mind, but musically he was mediocre (as a composer / arranger).
>>69045157
This is the best description, although I doubt the "genius" aspect.
>>69045619
It's not "nothing". Read a book.

...Holy fuck. I'm listening to the second song and it's beautiful.
Why did he feel the need to release a song that's nothing?

It isn't a song that is nothing. It is an exploration of the limits of music. Music notation has rests in it, the empty spaces between notes are just as significant as the notes. He just took it to the extreme. It questions what music is and it makes people butthurt even though it is only 4 and a half minutes, it is worth releasing for that reason alone. How many hours do you spend listening to manufactured music, how many hours do you spend listening to the natural world.

I feel like great experimental composers need to prove themselves in the traditional music style before they move onto something new, like Schönberg for example. He was a very good composer of the late romantism style, but certainly felt the need to move on and so he did.
With Cage I just feel like he suddenly went experimental without any proper background, which kind of is true, given that he utterly despised the concept of harmony, mainly because his teacher said he was bad at it.

>he utterly despised the concept of harmony
I'm pretty sure that this is factually untrue.
No Cage
No Hampus
