I have a very good memory for melody, regardless of context. I can recall melodies from John Fahey pieces that I've heard once over a year ago, I can recall hooks from songs I heard at the bar last night while nearly blacked out, but I cannot for the life of me remember a single melody from a CHVRCHES song, and I was actively listening (something I doubt many if any of you do) twice through when I originally listened to make sure that I wasn't judging too quickly.

It's just mediocre pop music with a cute singer who wields victimhood to further her career. Which is fine, she definitely has a talent for it and I'm not going to dog someone for doing what they are good at to make money, but I'd never pretend that she has musical talent. It would be intellectually dishonest.

Really the only weapon they have is Lauren. She's not a particularly exceptional singer but as far as pop bands go she is more than serviceable, and she needs all the room she can get to shine. On top of that, as much as the three of them would hate to admit it, her looks are literally the only reason that the hype surrounding them grew in the time after The Mother we Share was released.
If Lauren played a more prominent role in writing the lyrics they have the potential to be some kind of icon at least among feminist pop bands. I dont know how well her talent for writing would translate to lyricism, but if it works out well then they could have something really special.
The simple fact is that even now Iain and Martin are totally irrelevant, and Lauren doesnt have much to fall back on in terms of standing out if she were to go solo.
Their third album better be a grand slam or we may never hear from them again.

False. Their singles (including TMWS) were legit earworms, undeniable super catchy tunes. Her look doesn't help too much if the songs aren't good. Yes they have a big fanbase but not one that is entirely comprised of people who admire the music. You're underestimating how much male fans gravitate to Chvrches just for Lauren. I hate to sound like a tumblrina but objectification of Lauren is a huge component to their popularity. Is that most of the fanbase? no. But its certainly not the tiny tiny minority you think it is.

True. I would argue that consistent success as a career goes on is far more valuable than having a fantastic start though. Even then, its not like the first two albums are pure gold.

This is true for the first album, not so much for the second. Every Open Eye had comparatively far weaker singles and having been to several Chvrches live shows I can confirm that in my experience the crowd always reacts better to material from Bones of What you Believe.
