Can we all agree that ELP is quite possibly the best prog rock band of all time? It's just superior in every way to other bands. It's a perfect mix of new and old, experimental and traditional.

yea, i agree on that one.

not many bands can pull off a classical arrangement like this

They're far from the best of all time (I'd give that title to King Crimson) but they're definitely underrated and unduly hated.

To be fair, King Crimson members and ELP knew each other well, and Greg Lake was the singer in KC during the Court of the Crimson King era.

This is one of the greatest progressive rock songs ever.

It's a 20 + minute song and there isn't a single dull moment. They're energetic, wild, interesting, without a guitar player. That's what amazes me the most.

That's one of the reasons while I really enjoy ELP, every song feels like a classical piece, has proper development, contrast and doesn't get dull or boring.

why*

Not only that, but they made acoustic folk songs like Lucky Man and C'est la vie work. Here's an interesting interview with Greg Lake explaining how he did it:

The orchestral version is awesome, really shows how much Emerson composed his prog like a concerto rather than a glorified pop song.

>without a guitar player
I read few years ago that Hendrix was considered for joining ELP making it HELP but he died. Sad.
>>

Not entirely true, their manager raised the possibility but both Emerson, Lake and Hendrix said it wouldn't work out. Their styles were too different

I don't know if they're the best but they're up there, and one of my favorites. I used to be wary of them because it sounded like raw chopsmanship, but one of the things that helped me really appreciate them is how much fun they sound like they're having. They're pretentious, but not in a way that they take themselves seriously. Plus I'm a keys player so I love a band that has a good one.

Emerson > Palmer >>>>>>> Lake

Oh, didn't know about that. I read that long time ago and it sounded like some urban legend, interesting to know similar situation actually happened.
