ESG was from the 80s no wave scene and sort of blended it with hip-hop. They're great. Not to be confused with the southern rapper of the same name.

Maybe try some of the post-punk funk/disco stuff, like Liquid Liquid or all those ZE Records artists (check out the compilation album Mutant Disco), and from there go to old school hip-hop.
