Judging by the singles is Death Magnetic pt. 2
Another bunch of generic thrash songs with awful production on top
>>
8/10 better than death magnetic. Lots of highlights, 3 or so boring cuts but a nice listen after 2 times through it

Now that we're dead sounds surprisingly Load-ish
>>
Sounds worse than my penis in your mouth
>>
Too much fucking snare rolls, Lars is as unimaginative as in the last 20 years.
Kirk's solos are uninspired most of the time.
Het still holds up, voice sounds breddy good as well his riffs, this could've been much better with a better lead guitarist and drummer .
Trujillo does his job.
>>

Terrible album cover. Like Def Leppard's Hysteria but shitty. After hearing the first couple singles I won't bother listening to it because Metallica has been a neutered shell of it's former self since the early 90's.

Now That We're Dead is so cool and cinematic. I can definitely imagine it play over some road movie opening credits. CD 1 delivers so far.

God damn it Kirk when are they going to fucking fire your pathetic sloppy balding ass and hire a real pro? His attempts at doing vibrato are surreal, this guy has been playing for over 30 years and he sounds like an amateur

its too fucking long.
The songs sound nice but I don't want to listen to it for longer than 30 minutes because it just gets boring.

Mature listeners will love it, highscholl and college metalheads will hate it for not being thrashy enough. Top notch groove rock/metal, 9/10 from me. It would have been a 10 but I just think that it's missing a ballad.

It's really interesting and great musically but I have a feeling Metallica fans are going to hate it

The three singles and Spit out the Bone all sound like classic Metallica stuff but the rest of it sounds more like Baroness or Mastadon, and I don't know how well that approach is going to go down with people

Then again I'm biased, I have this feeling that a lot of old school Metallica fans are kinda dumb. I remember at the bridge school charity concert they'd finished playing (I think) Hero of the Day, and a bunch of guys start booing and telling them to fuck off, chanting "no more new shit, more old school shit", and then they start playing Bleeding Me, and the guys start cheering being all like "YEAAAAH WOO THAT'S MORE LIKE IT".
>>
>>69028851

Yeah that's typical... I guess there are some people who just don't appreciate their entire catalogue.

This album is amazing. I can even hear similarities to Megadeth.

So far, everyone on the Metclub forum are loving it.

I mean, after this release, if you still hate Metallica... Then I think you should just finally move on and don't even bother yourself with them at all.
>>
spit out the bone is really good. there were a few other good tracks mixed in with some mediocre/forgettable ones. would be a lot better if the album was shorter and the cover wasnt so god awful. 7/10 will listen to it again.

So my consensus on this is that the first half is very good, some songs pushing it beyond very good (end of Halo is hype as shit.) Second half is a little slow, most of it is forgettable. Until of course you get to Spit Out the Bone, then you hit unprecedentedly high levels of Metallica badassery. Overall probably a 7.5/10

This cover is legit good tbqh.
>>69034022
>his riffs were so unmemorable he had to record them on a phone to begin with
>>
>>69034185
Have you ever done serious songwriting? Like, for an album? You think of so much shit, you have to start recording yourself. I record myself the majority of the time I play because most often you stumble across your hooks and good riffs.

I feel like you pretty much have to do this when you are trying to write 20 songs to whittle down to 8-12
>>
The fuck is going on in this thread? I liked Metallica all the way up to the early 2000s and I don't believe you guys.

Not gonna pirate either :p
>>
>>69034227
Yes, I have done this. And I write shit down on my computer, and keep three backups. Not because I can't play the riffs from my head, but to track the other instruments that nobody bothers songwriting for.
>>
>>69034233
This album has some fucking good songs.

Halo is great.
>>
>>69034227
>>69034239
And to add to this: if I forget a part of the song, well big deal, good riddance. It probably wasn't as memorable as I thought, considering I, its own writer, fucking forgot it.
>>
>>69034233
Don't get it twisted. This album is better than anything they've done in the past sixteen years.
>>
>>69034249
It's hard to believe but it's harder to believe this overwhelmingly positive thread even if it's true.
>>
>>69034233
you might wanna check this one out. best mixing they've had on a record in a while, songwriting is more nuanced and dynamic, real heavy riffs here and there. this sounds like what people have been wanting metallica to sound like for a decade now.
>>
>>69034260
Yeah I completely get what you mean... I am shocked by the reception too.

But... it is a very good album... considering these guys have been writing for 35+ years.
>>
>>69034257
Lulu was unironically better. For all of its numerous flaws, at least they weren't halfassedly rehashing themselves.
>>
>>69034022
I genuinely did not know that kirk wrote any riffs for metallica ever. I thought it was just james
>>
>>69034288
I'm definitely a minority here, but I liked Lulu very much. It made me discover other genres of music that I wouldn't otherwise.
>>
>>69034311
That's a bit odd to say since the genres of Lulu are spoken word, heavy metal and soft rock
>>
>>69034321
Yeah but then I got into Lou Reed's music and then other soft rock and art rock stuff too.
>>
>>69034288
I don't feel like they're rehashing themselves. They genuinely haven't ever played a song like Halo on Fire before, for example.
>>
I still don't get why you all like spit out the bone so much. That fucking riff is shit.
>>
>>69034308
if kirk wrote any riffs on the album you would probably be able to recognise it, would be closer to something like my apocalypse over the hetfield chug that dominates this album

i think they work best when theres a combo of both and on this album it's too one voiced to be really exciting
>>

Is this real?
>>
>>69020540
Great drumming fills.
>>
I'm worried it's gonna go the same way as Death Magnetic where the full album never gets played live and the one song that became a live staple wasn't that great.

Spit Out the Bone deserves to be on every setlist until they retire. it should be up there with Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets
>>
>>69035790
Fucking lazy bastards, especially kirk.
>>
This album honestly failed to connect with me besides Spit Out The Bone, and I even really like Death Magnetic.

I was like 11 when DM came out though, so it may be nostalgia.

I'm 18, not underage.

The drums sound too tight and it destroys the aspect the first albums had.

Is anyone else freaked out by the level of Sabbath worship? The slow riffing is pretty much everywhere, and "Dream no More" is a straight-up Ozzy effect ripoff.

I find the album boring for the most part. The riffing is recognizably Hetfield, Het's vocals sound at least as decent as they did on DM sometimes surpassing the last album, Lars is awfully basic but at least had a good sound engineer, and Hammett is still, unsurprisingly, a talentless hack who keeps gaining good, sponsored reviews for his random pentatonic runs. What suprpised me, though, is the scarce presence of the wah.

"Moth into Flame"'s chorus is going to keep giving me cringes until the end of my days. The title tracks sounds like they're trying to fit under their own label and record something that sounds exactly like "KEA" would with modern sound. The only tracks I can really recognize as the album's bright points immediately are "Confusion" and "Spit out the Bone".

Oh yeah, those two and "Manunkind", I mean. The only piece of their doomostoner inclination on the album that actually turned out good and didn't need the Ozzy voc gimmick.
>>
>>69036090
Probably because they hit it with 12 mics in a million dollar studio, then compress the living fuck out of it, then keep the beat tied down to a rythm analyzer. I get that drums need to be on time but who wants or needs that much hi-fi?
>>
>>69036448
Also on the making of Death Magnetic you see that Lars literally asks the guy assembling the mix to slice some of the beats to use only the best parts and repeat them as necessary. As opposed to, you know, playing the damn thing and getting it right.

The snare in Hardwired seriously rustles me more than that of St Anger. Specially on the rolls. It sounds almost like a midi, as in it's just a single snare sample being repeated, not a live snare (which would have slight variations and stressess.) Might as well fucking replace Lars with a drum machine at this point.
>>
>>69036222

quit samefagging
>>
>>69036550
Lars has always sucked, it's just more apparent now cause he wants his drums louder than the rest
>>
bros, this isn't that good. "good for metallica," yes. there is no reason for anyone to listen to this unless they want to hear more metallica, even if it's mediocre. if you think this is especially good or worth defending, you are dumb, dumb like people who think johnny greenwood is great. maximum pleb.

I know we won't ever get a Metallica album that can keep up with Ride anymore, but this is just tired.
>>
>>69022173
Pretty much this. James Hetfield has been unlistenable since St. Anger. He needs to acknowledge this and fucking retire already.
>>
Just finished the first disc.

Atlas Rise, Halo on Fire, Now that We're Dead and Moth Into Flame were all genuinely good.

Hardwired's chorus is still cringey as fuck and pretty much ruins the song.

Dream No More just... doesn't work. Ozzy-era Sabbath is one of my favorite metal bands of all time, and i grew up on Metallica, but the latter should never try to imitate the former.

Kirk, just as he was on Death Magnetic, is the star of the show here. James has some good moments and some not-so-good moments.
>>
>>69036215
I haven't listened to it yet, is Spit Out the Bone really that good?
>>
This entire album is the blandest release since Reload. Everything on this is greatly inspired and you can tell that Kirk had nothing to do with this album. The clean guitar tones sound weak and unfinished, and because there are so few of them, they really stick out. Now That We're Dead drags hard throughout, and the solo feels like a copy paste. The Alice in Chains vibe is nice on Dream No More, but the vocal harmonization is execute poorly, and It honestly would have sounded better to have Rob sing on one of the vocal tracks than the incestuous same of the same two voices on different notes. I see comparisons to the Ozzy sound, but I just can't hear is with Hetfield's voice, Ozzy's can sound good over itself, Hetfield's can't

The majority of vocal tracks overuse autotune, and though it's nowhere near as bad as radio garbage, its obvious that Hetfield needs more of his raw sound. The vocals tracks sound like they recorded in an echochamber with the mics across the room, and the use of the reverb got old on the first track it appeared on. I didn't want to hear this come up on multiple tracks, yet it did. Like the vocals, the harmonized guitar sections were uncharacteristic of Metallica, and sound cheesy.

Throughout the album I found myself more eager to finish, because nothing resonated. Every track either drags on too long, or was just a bad song. This sounds like something a lesser band would make, and that level of boredom is something I don't even get from an Anthrax album. This was by no means even on level with Death Magnetic, and St. Anger has great riffs, great sounds, where here it's all bland and common. All the unfinished cuts from Beyond Magnetic have more heart than this. I hope the next album in 2025 sounds like Metallica, and not like a parody of itself.
>>
>>69038272
No it's not, I made the mistake of letting /mu/ hype it for me, and it's at least better than the worst tracks from DM.
>>
>>69038272
Yes, one of the best song they've ever written. I'd say it's probably the best of the album closers apart from maybe Dyers Eve.

There's a pretty huge gap between Spit Out the Bone, Moth into Flame, Halo on Fire, Dream No More, Now That We're Dead, and the rest of the album.

Should they just have released one disk with those six songs on it? It would be a bit of a kick in the nuts waiting 8 years for 6 songs but stuff like Atlas Rise and ManUNkind do feel a bit like filler, and they even admitted they wrote Hardwired in like two days or something just because they wanted a faster opener.
>>
>mfw it's going to get absolutely trashed on Metal Archives because it doesn't sound exactly like their first four albums

What do you think guys? which is the better album dystopia or this?

There sure is some wankers in this thread who think they are better then these 50 year olds who are still hitting & playing hard.
Ive been a fan since 1983, these days i listen to Death Metal but this album has taken me for good ride.
Most of the naysayers in this thread have not got a clue, they think the know but they dont, not one clue

>>69038986
Thing is, Bob Rock didn't write the records, he produced them, and they came out great production wise. Bob gets shit because he worked with Metallica in their mainstream era. But you can't beat Flemming Rasmussen's production in their entire catalog.
>>
>>69038884
ditto here, also apparently he said before the election that this time there's no good major candidate. and in the vid for "Post American World" he actually resembles Trump even more
>>
just finished disc 1 and my opinion so far is that metallica no longer has the compositional ability to make several 8 minute long songs in a row bearable to sit through

the production doesn't help
>>
>>69038499
halfway though hardwired, but dystopia. dystopia was more interesting by this point.
>>
>>69039216
Dystopia was better. It had a few ugly fillers and a certain shade of blandness to it, but hey, at least the riffing was worthy of a 30-year veteran on the metal scene, and the solos did not give me cancer

holy fuck the 2nd disc drags down the overall quality so much.

and yeah Spit Out The Bone is pretty dope but still.
>>
People approach Metallica with a level of adolescent cynicism I have never seen directed at anything else in my life, musical or otherwise. Thankfully that seems to have ended with this album but we've got a few stragglers who just hate everything for no good reason.
>>
oh my god these songs are so long
i swear to god "here comes revenge" has like 4 verses before the solo and they're all the same shit
>>
>>69039103
Mate, this is just insurance because megadeth has many latino fans. They're popular as fuck in south america so he can't really say he supports trump without damaging the megadeth brand.
>>
>>69034377
Honestly, half of it is by-the-numbers thrash metal but there still are some very nice ideas in it too. It's a good song.
>>
>>69039102
Why did they fire their best producer?
>>
finished the album. halo on fire and spit out the bone are the only songs i can remember parts from, besides the singles. i feel like i need to listen to the album again to remember it, and thats a problem. i can think back to when i first got into metallica i remembered the riffs and such so much easier and listed to albums again because i wanted to, not out of obligation. it feels like they can write good songs like the first 5 albums, but are fucking with us. either that, or they are trying to cater to EVERY metallica fan. i guess that can be seen as a decency. there are load era songs on this album that im sure are there for the handful of people that like those albums entirely and not just like 4 songs like i do.
>>
the whole thing is boring and forgettable, spit out the bone is severely overrated
>>
What the fuck do you niggers like so much about Spit out the Bone? That solo starts at 3:58 mediocre is mediocre at best, but it's actually borderline boring.
>>
>>69040228
Yeah, I fucked up the wording because at first I put it differently, but the point is, even though it has its moments, the song overall is boring.
>>
>>69039641
>adolescent cynicism
Spot on. I said earlier that this album is for the mature audience only, teenagers and manchildren need not apply. I mean, I see kids on facebook feel nostalgia for shit that came out a decade before they were born, it's just silly. People seem to ignore the fact that Metallica hasn't played pure thrash in like 25 years.
>>
>>69022326
Fuck off, Hetfield.
>>
>>69040314
Fuck off, Dave.
>>
>>69040274
>hasn't played pure thash in like 25 years
what is Death Magnetic?
>>
>>69040721
You're confusing trash metal with thrash metal
>>
>>69040721
The same it has been since black album, groove metal. Would you call Pantera thrash?
>>
>>69040743
>>69040853
Except it is thrash, and some of their best work they've ever made. It's nothing like groove metal, and it's their early work with 25 years of maturity behind it.
>>
>>69040994
lol no, it's their most dishonest album. It was after St Anger and they were trying to tell their fans "hey guys we're still metal, see?" but what they played sounded forced and uninspired. I'm a diehard fan and I haven't put that shit on in like 3 years.
>>
>>69040994
>some of their best work they've ever made
Why are you lying on the internet?
>>
>>69020540
Now that I think of it...I could easily replicate that album cover in Pixlr. Shitty cover desu
