Alright, so I've uploaded a couple of tracks I've made before learnin keys and stuff

http://www.easynicelifetime.com/old_theoretically_written_projects/Hip_Hop_Instrumental_2.mp3

My Question is: Can this be considered trap? What genre would you apply to this? I'm genuinelly curious. Also say that I've done well on the mastering.
>>
>>68984083
>http://www.easynicelifetime.com/old_theoretically_written_projects/Hip_Hop_Instrumental_2.mp3

Genre: Trash lol

Work on your drums and who gives a fuck whether people consider it trap or not?
>>
>>68984168

rude, but why do you consider it trash though? I like it very much, although the sounds are old-fashioned

I won't do this kind of music anymore anyway because the making process is boring so there is no "working on the drums" to be done here. When I was making it I had trap in mind but I didn't ask anyone if it really applies yet or better: I haven't shown this to anyone yet lol
>>
>>68984168

What do you have to say against the drums though? I was being sloppy on the programming them but the sound is A+, they're punchy and full of tension. Also there is a cowbell.

tambourine and crackle are too hot.. In that order.

Progression is eh, instruments are great
>>
>>68984083
I think it sounds bad, definetly not trap. I really dont like the drums, and a lot of the synth parts dont really mesh.

Mixing advice on this? How's it sound on your studio monitors?
>>
>>68984666
>https://clyp.it/tbddvxb2
nice digits, praise kek

The vocal sounds like it's trapped in a bathroom. Mix is totally squashed overall, lack of low end.
>>
>>68984666
take this as a listener not a producer, sounds a bit like she's singing in the other room
tremolo synths sound a bit odd but i can't say if it's the mix or the instrument
>>
>>68984492

Don't "mesh" ? What does that mean? Also I've seen a lot of worse sounding pieces of music, especially here. What don't you like about the drums? For me they sound okay, or don't you like the pattern?
>>
>>68984743
>The vocal sounds like it's trapped in a bathroom.
Too much reverb, maybe? Or was it the low pass filter on the chorus vocal parts that made it like that?

>>68984750
>>68984750

I recorded the notes in to give it an """organic""" feel.

Both actually, because they're the same for me, kind of... other people who make music

No, I don't fish for compliments, I just want to share some older stuff by me and hear some critic since I don't have the possibility to get some

I mixed that beat/song on casual 15 Bucks-Speakers bought 2007 (I'm being serious) and I'm happy I don't have to use them for producing anymore hahah

When it comes to older albums and stuff: All eyez on me by 2pac has got a very good mix, also the Kamasi washington album is mixed well
>>
>>68988961
As far as obvious examples, Dark Side of the Moon and anything by Brian Eno sound flawless imo. Regardless of what you think of DSOTM in terms of it being overrated, the recording and mixing is literally perfect, and that was 1973 for fuck sake.

I recommend checking out Tropeau Bleu by Cortex, a less well known album, but also sounds fantastic. Also anything by Dr. Buzzard and his Savannah Band

bring the bass synth down cuz it's choking a lot of the other elements especially the kick

this is just personal preference, but i'd prefer if the top end was wider also you could probably get away with boosting the volume on the hat/snare a db or two

also look into parallel and multiband compression if you haven't already
>>
>>68989443

Don't ever ever get discouraged! It's like anything, all about practice. Listen to all the music you can and analyze it, and compare to your recordings. If you hear something you like try googling the song and see how they produced it. It's an addicting hobby, but rewarding when you hear your mixes pumping on your speakers

I know this, my suggestion is to just stop for a little while, take a week off of music, paint some pictures, look at nature, focus on something else for a little bit. Then if you feel like it next week, sit down at the piano and play your favorite riff (mine is personally the intro to Benie and the Jets) and watch the smile come back to your face. Then just keep playing and let it flow before you know it after fumbling with some chords you might have a cool progression you like. But really, take a little break man!

Look for inspiration everywhere.
Read theory books, deconstruct, look at your favorite songs and experiment, you can learn to be creative and if you have a good taste with that you can turn anything to gold.
Write everything down so you don't forget the ideas you have and compose even when you are not on a PC, or whatever you use, in your head.

So you've been having issues with trying to fit the vocals into your mix and I think I may have something that might help. Personally, I like to add some spacial depth / reverb with a free plugin called "dimension plus." Its super simple and really effective if you place it before your eq chain.

Also, this is just my preference, but I like to throw on a light compressor onto my vocals. Like something with a low ratio (1.25:1), a 0.5 ms attack, and a 100 ms delay.

help a newb please? i'm using FL
i sampled a part of the song, slowed down the tempo, same with the bpm. when i added the kicks hats and stuff, i cant fully put it on time because of either very low/high bpm, and whenever i ttry to put the bpm to 100-120 again, the sample changes.

should i just record the sample with edison? or is there another way?
>>
>>69002123
You can open the sample and go to the time stretching setting, right click on the time and try to autodetect it.
Or stretch it so it fits X bars and it should keep up with the BPM of the song if you change it unless you click no to auto-stretch or something like that.
>>
>>69001975
Either do it in your daw if that's possible or use something like bome's midi translator.
>>
>>69002265

yeah i did that. is that bad?
fit to tempo for it to slow down, then did it again with the time stretch.

the bpm is around 30 now, so it's really hard to put in the drums.

If you did that then do the first thing that I said or pick a BPM and then stretch the sample with the pic related and then fix the pitch with the pitch settings in the time stretch. The top one where the pan and volume is won't work if you have time adjusted sample.

Do di boxes help with an interface like the scarlett 2i2? Trying to do guitar/bass straight in at the same time im recording an amp. Thats no problem, but the di tracks ive always recorded are not the best, slightly buzzy. I dont know if thats from an impedance mismatch or just that its a cheap interface. I cant find anything in the manual mentioning a di box, but its advertised as being designed for guitarists.

Used a Roland A-33 76 key, but that had velocity problems, plus its fuckhueg.

These days I'm using my Mopho x4 since it has the best feeling keybed out of all of my keyboards. A close second would be my organs, but none of them have midi.

The buzz isnt caused by any of those though, its still present with guitar/bass straight in when im not using an amp. Im jist wondering if anyone else had this interface and used a di box, if that got rod of the hum.
>>
>>69003449
Thanks, I'm guessing the drum solo is kind of out of place?
>>

I think it's your interface. There shouldn't be buzz. It might be fixed with a DI, but chances are that the problem could persist even after using a DI.

Still, DIs are pretty handy to have, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to get one anyways.

It's down to the device manufacturers. USB devices are pretty much just peripherals and need a host to act as a hub and to allow interconnectivity. Connecting two USB MIDI devices to each other with no USB host in the middle is like connecting two printers directly to each other, so what would need to be done is for manufacturers of MIDI controllers to design their devices to act as USB hosts so that other devices can be connected directly to them.
>>
https://clyp.it/0oy4wfsm
Tear it to shreds please! :)
>>
>>69006364

I might add that this can already be done in a limited form with some USB MIDI controllers, where they can host USB storage devices - all that would need to be added is the additional descriptor code in their firmware to allow them to recognize and work with USB MIDI.
>>
>>69001591
people are saying the drums dont fit in the mix because of the mic placement, i can tell you are only using one mic, or 2 overheads, keep the other mics where they are they pic up the hat and cymbals nicely but you should mic the snare to get a more upfront sound on it. you also should mic the kik

the composition is lackluster and drab meaning there is not much going on, its a repeat of 4 chords over and over, production is not bad, the thing that stands out the most is the ammount of bitcrusher /dist you have but over all the drums, I like the idea of having the drums distorted a bit but I feel you went way to gung ho, I would do 30/70 dry wet on the effect

Gotta start somewhere

Here is a new track with all the lessons I've learned over the last couple threads here

- Effects are applied with VST plugins instead of real boxes to avoid over-saturation
- Levels are not blown out
- Recording noise is cut down thanks to >>69007241

Depends on what im doing. Ive been playing guitar since 04, started recording in 05 with audacity and a computer mic, got my first interface in 06. At that point i was doing punk and metal, i learned midi programming because i had no way to record drums and not sound like shit. In 07 i got turned on to fruity loops and started making beats and selling them at school. I grew up in the hood around hip hop, so that was just a natural transition for me. Since then ive grown a lot musically, but i got mics for recording live instruments, quite a few amps and guitars/basses, a usb keyboard, still using fl studios but i also started using pro tools in like 14.

Im in the process of moving/remodeling a house so i dont have a dedicated space right now. Pic related is a dirty set up i have in my buddies basement. Im doing a lot more in the box writing right now because i can handle everything on my laptop without having to set up and break down equipment. Its kind of strange because normally i put live instruments on everything, but im actually half way into a project with a rapper where ive yet to even want to use live instruments. Ive also got over half a project written with a different rapper that is going to use no sequencing, ill be playing everything live with only minor corrections. Keys are going to be tracked to midi just so the sound can be altered later, and guitars are going to have a clean di track taken at the same time so they can be reamped later if the original take doesnt end up feeling right.

My gear game isnt where i want it to be, but itll be getting there after i start setting ul my basement studio. I started out much like you are now.

OK /prod/ so I use both Renoise and Ableton and up to now I haven't dabbled in makign DnB but I'm about to.

Question: which DAW should I use first for the first DnB track I make?

How do I get big rappers to use my beats? Like what is the process used for them to consider buying them off of me?
>>
>>69011242
the only way that works is you have to give them sexual favors

What type of music do you guys make?

Regardless of whether it's good music the sound design, mixing and mastering is on another level. Sinkhole in particular is one of the best examples. The way they use the stereo field is insane

Too small. I regret having so few keys. Otherwise a very cheap and solid controller

Become in demand by little rappers, then become in demand by middle of the road rappers, then become recognized as a producer, have your name known, then maybe youll gain the interest of a big rappers creative team. Youre not going to sell a big rapper a beat you made, youre going to make a beat for the rapper and theyre going to buy the rights for it. Big rappers dont pick from the rack like normal people do, they have their clothes tailored. They have the luxury of working with who they want.

You can always find the next drake before he even has a mixtape out and start producing for him, then you can ride the coat tails to the top and people will want to work with you to get to that level themselves, then you can make money by quanity.

It would be nice if someone would like to add voices to it.
