I agree for the most part but people are a bit unfair to it. It has it's moments, Miss Fortune is pretty smoking most of the way through it and Kamasi could be a very consistent soloist if he didn't take more time than he knows what to do with. I think it shows potential at the very least, though you'd need to change a lot to make it a really good record.

detecting chemistry comes from looking at the scales different parts to the instrumentation use, the polyrhythms or syncopation they employ, when they synchronize melodies or harmonize, etc. You just have to pay close attention, which I like doing anyway for jazz music. The Epic doesn't do a good job because Kamasi just does his own shit for half the album or just soloes as hard as he can, while the backing either do their own thing or try to create a good, well flowing background for kamasi to just come in like the tidal wave over the sand castle like bwah bobodobodoobodobodoobodooobdoodo

a solid 3/4ths of Coltrane's discography, you could go check out some Bill Evans(pianist), Duke Ellington has great chemistry, Thelonious Monk's early stuff, there's a lot out there to give you some entry-level recs that are great jazz.

see, you got all mixed up by my language friend. I meant that Kamasi was overly concerned with technique(relied too much on it), and it caused him to give a lack of attention to other key aspects of jazz like atmosphere, chemistry, and sentiment. You don't know music theory if you think that album isn't technical. That doesn't even make sense, that 's like calling Gorguts's Obscura not technical. It objectively is, musically. I respect your opinion, but disagree with it. I don't think The Epic lacks neither atmosphere or sentiment. It has its moments for both of these (as far as chemistry goes I'm totally with you, this band was kinda shit).

About technique: what about The Epic do you consider technical so much? I wouldn't call Kamasi's playing techinical by any means. His solos always relies on the same scales (mostly pentatonics) and they don't lead nowhere but a predictable place.
The piano on here is extremely sterile as well. I'd call Thundercat playing way too techinical and lacking clear structures.

But in the end, my main complain about this record is NOT that Kamasi is too concerned with techinque, but rather the solos all of the whole band lack any kind of coherence (as you've said it, it has no chemistry) and the fact that The Epic is unimaginitive and drags inspirations for much better records and musicians.

So, do I dare to say, could you explain better you point?

Technicality is a production of songwriting. For one, the chords he and the band uses are at times technical and complex, and the variation of time signatures that shows up on the more progressive tracks is technical as well. But mostly with technique I was referring to his performance, he does a lot of accelerando and decelerando, and while his scales aren't the most diverse, composition-wise his performances in combination with the instrumentation creates a lot of that technique. Whether it's a good or bad thing is at the judge of the listener.

Well I didn't say there was a lack of atmosphere or sentiment, I said there was a lack of attention to it. One could argue that any song ever has atmosphere inherently but that's neither here nor there. I'm just saying he didn't put enough thought into growing and cultivating an atmosphere because he was so concerned with his own sax performance. I couldn't agree more about Thundercat. I feel like he saw where Kamasi was directing the project and was just like oh so we're just playing whatever the fuck we want then? cool, and just did his own thing, albeit much more technically than Kamasi in regard to scale, etc.

For the most part though I can say we agree. I also think it's very lacking in creativity and direction. Hopefully I explained my piece more, it can get a bit foggy when referring to things like technique and what ground exactly that that covers
