It's the best and most consistent Metallica album and includes all of their sounds, past, present, and future.

If you like heavier more progressive Metallica, earlier albums will serve you better, but even within that, Black is the only album, front to back, powerhouse in their catalogue.

i always think of black album as metallicas radio-songs album. verse-chorus at its most basic. all the riffs are the stuff you learn when you first pick up a guitar. all very mid tempo at best. production is very 'nice' sounding too.

5/10 musically, but from a sales point of view, oh boy...

I listened to Death Magnetic for the first time since it came out. It was the first time I've listened to Metallica since then and I actually really enjoyed it. It's not a masterpiece but it sounds like they are doing a parody of themselves. Almost like they've Flanderised themselves perhaps. It's so gauche that I love it.

I really should just listen to everything they've done, although I'm not really in to metal.

Not really. I haven't given it a good listen in forever, but I see no reason to look back when they've got a lot better stuff.

Even the new singles, though they're a little generic, are pretty good. Atlas is my favorite so far.
