This is the only album I would feel comfortable comparing to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

This is the kind of competition Euronymous was dying for back in the day.

Had this album come out in 1993, this band being Swedish, it would've pushed the Scandinavian black metal war to insane extremes.

no, you can argue that they are a launching point but I don't see why they are EXCELLENT, in fact they are horrible because people who get into black metal from sunbather and even wittr tend to have the shittiest taste so no, they're not an excellent launching point, they're the worst angle you could get into black metal from

On the opposite, for me participation is the key. And plug.dj room is totally dead. Not only that, I of course could spam links to it in every thread and ask people to come and hang out, but I don't even feel like coming there anymore myself.
>>
>>68953517
Because everyone in these threads are more about being seen as kvlt and calling out what is and isn't BM than actually talking about BM. All I've been doing is checking in every so often to see if anyone posts an album that looks interesting and then leave.

I've a question for those of you that hitherto listened to many different albums by quite a few different bands.

Do you not do anything but listen to music all day every day? How can you absorb and truly familiarize yourselves with any of the 3+ albums you listen to every day? Assuming they're all albums you haven't heard before.

At the end of NBBMN, how many different albums have you heard? Do you still even enjoy listening to music as much after all that?
>>
>>68953733
its not that i only listen to music all day, its that i dont do a whole lot of anything else so my time is free to listen to a lot of music, the albums that I feel I haven't fully digested I've written down and plan to go back to before the end of the month. I'm >>68953610 btw

Then suggest shit that you think is better. It's not that fucking difficult.
You barely do that more than one post per day.

>how can this be what's wrong with NBBMN and not the lack of taste or discussion of non-black metal bands?

Does anybody have some relatively obscure black metal recs?

I like Burzum, Coldworld, Emperor, Satyricon, Agalloch, and Obsequiae; also a lot more that I cannot remember off the top of my head (HDD died).

>>68955537
I'm not sure how obscure you want them, since obscure isn't necessarily good (and it's almost always a sign of unoriginality), but you should try Inferi, Forgotten Woods, Abyssic Hate, Wyrd, Wigrid, Niflheim (pre-Gris project), Forgotten Tomb (seems like a joke, but there are dozens of bands that are named "Forgotten [something]") and early Deinonychus. Maybe Malvery?
>>68955556
ok you need to stop shilling that album. You (I'm assuming it's you because no one else could possibly care so much about it) compared it to DsO and said that it was actually better and when I went for a listen I was met with mediocre modern bm that could have been released ten years ago without making a bleep in the radar.

There are at least three bands called Inferi. Context, my friend. Context.

Acting as an enthusiastic third-party that's only innocently promoting something that they really think is good when in reality there are other reasons to promote it, such as being in the band, being friends of the band, or wanting other people to give their approval for an album you're into but not entirely convinced by, because you need consensus in order to enjoy things.

You idiots. What you do in these cases is drive the library to the ground then offer to buy the books (you don't need to buy the whole thing; make a selection) for dirt cheap. You keep the ones you like and sell the rest on Amazon.

Libraries are overrated. If you want books, you'll get books. Also you'll rest soundly at night knowing that there's very little chance your books are being handled by dozens of cumstained hands every week.

You need to go to Finland. Sargeist, Satanic Warmaster, Horna, whatever. They're the kings of being unoriginal.
>Or little known second wave bands?
You ever heard of Tulus? Only their debut is decent, but it's exactly what you're looking for. Then there's Fimbulwinter for all your raw needs, and Sort Vokter, which is just as raw but the varied production, the keys and the riffs themselves lend it a magical atmosphere which makes for the perfect soundtrack to a night in the woods (perhaps even moreso than Ulver's Nattens Madrigal!). Ildjarn made some of the rawest 2nd wave BM albums, and was involved in Sort Vokter (he also released a preposterously lengthy ambient album followed by a duo of vastly superior ambient album/ep) Obtained Enslavement is rather well known, but seldom mentioned. It's what you'd get if you made Gorgoroth's UTSOH somehow rawer and more atmospheric (symphonic some would say) at the same time. Mystifier is a brazilian band that's celebrated but not mentoned often enough. Kvist, Algol and Isvind usually go under the radar even though they've made some of the strongest albums of late-2nd-wave. The Abyss' 1995 album The Other Side is also not nearly as popular as it should be. There's Trelldom, too, but they're rather well known. Their second album is a fucking masterpiece and Gaahl's best performance

I finally had a black metal dream. A few nights ago I dreamt about Elliott Smith and that made me think that I'd lost NBBMN. Last night however I dreamt that I was in a record store and they had tons of Black Metal cassettes. I ended up "buying" Minas Morgul and Caducaus - Middle Ages, however it was reissued and had different cover art. I was very upset when I woke up and realized that there isn't a decent record store that sells black metal near me.

Only one year of torment left, hopefully, and then I'll finally go to uni and will have enough space for myself. Black metal helps, as does music in general, and I'm also rewatching X Files, so that helps, too.

That's one goddamned tour de force. Something around two hours of Ildjarn pressing exactly three keys per track. I think the Hardangervidda album and EP are a much better introduction to the genre.

There's also Beherit's H418ov21.C and Electric Doom Synthesis. Didn't like them at first, but, like most things, they grew on me once I developed a taste for dungeon synth.

>>68956774
Fine, you deserve a better reply.
I find the album is a very cohesive industrial-ish mass of sharp riffs that aren't too distant from the Snorre era (and if you liked Wolf's Lair Abyss there's no reason not to like it). Sure, there are two tracks from the second half that aren't quite as good (that strange trppy-hoppy track could have used some more working), and Maniac's vocals take a bit to get used to, but in the end you're left with a dystopian, maddening sci-fi black metal album that is both technically impressive, agressive as fuck and memorable. I think it's up there with Thorns' debut, Dodheimsgard's International 666 and Aborym's Kali Yuga Bizarre as the best industrial bm albums of all time (not counting the untouchable Shoes of Inferno, that is).
Of course you're just gonna disregard this with some offhand comment like "lol bleb opinenes" and whatever, so I guess I wasted my time. Welp, that's what you do here anyway.

This. I don't know why (early) Abruptum gets so much hate. I think their first three albums are amongst the most wonderful things second-wave bm ever produced, and they're excellent explorations of what can and can't be considered black metal; of what are the truly essential elements of black metal and what happens when you mess with everything else that could be considered necessary (including rhythm and riffs).

Going to give the new Saor my first listen. Aura was pretty great, but for some reason I was never to hyped to listen to it yet.

It was nice playing with you.

fun fact: this is a bootleg and it was confirmed by the band that this is just a fan made collection of songs and not a real album.

their only official release is the Dopamine EP, which is basically just instrumental black metal/post rock

Noob. Do quests, explore the world, train Slayer. It's really fun when you kinda get into it and know what you're doing. If you are playing Oldschool Runescape that is.

You can play online. The free2play version of the game is still really fun and helps you get into it easier. It's really fun to start playing the first time and just walk around and fight stuff.

Am I the only one who thinks this band's debut is better than the rest of their albums, and that there really is no need to go further? It's strange because I think Angantyr's first two albums, while good, aren't that great, and that the project reached its zenith with Hævn.
>>
>>68957192
Ya I like the debut the most from their discography. II was similar and Fri was slightly worse IMO.
>>
>>68957081
It's more than cool, it's the most daring and unique effort of the second wave. I mean it's to black metal what Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz must have been to jazz in the early 60s. Absolutely insane that they could make such a counter-intuitive jump, and at such an early period for second-wave.

Those first three albums really deserve more renown.

I mean, that's what the genres about.

Lurker of Chalice has a pretty mature atmosphere to it, and is probably the best DSBM album.

Guy, that's like asking "hey is there any NSBM that isn't all "lol heil hitler kill jews white power white power amirite"

But sure, there have been some great recs in this thread already. You can check out Inferi (I'll never tire to say this), Wigrid, Niflheim/Gris (though this leans more heavily towards so-called atmoshit territory, not that that's a bad thing), ye olde Strid and Forgotten Woods

>Absolutely insane that they could make such a counter-intuitive jump, and at such an early period for second-wave.
I didn't even realize that their first full length album was released in 1993. It's insane how such a unique record was released before most major BM bands released their full length debut.

I don't know, it might not have all the definitive qualities that DSBM generally has, but it is really unique. The lyrics aren't anything too different from other DSBM albums and the atmosphere it creates is one of the most melancholic I've ever heard.

a lot of german "atmospheric suicidal" is just "damn I'm so sad in this earthly earth" black with not too fuzzy guitars and cunt synths
also mutiilation could be considered DSBM and that would make them the best DSBM cause they are true depravity

and of course there's shining who are "lol dude cut yourself" instead of "lol dudes I'm cutting myself" but don't take that as a rec

Melechesh - Emissaries when I was 15 and just started getting into extreme metal, was a power and thrash metal fan before that.

I wish that I started to BM metal earlier though.

Maybe because I assumed that a lot of Black Metal sounds like shit and that it's not very technical, 15 year old me would love Deathspell Omega.
