Honestly I might say this, despite being a fairly big fan of some prog metal bands (Dream Theater, Opeth, the list goes on...)

Well, I guess the best way not to make it embarrassing is to have some sort of self-awareness about the music you make. Understand the cliches of genre, know what's been made, what's been influential. Knowing what makes for a good post-rock record helps a lot.

you really need to study why the first post rock records are so highly valued. spiderland and laughing stock are so dense musically and you need to understand whats happening in both fully before trying to make something 20 years from that.
