A band member is more than just an instrumentalist. I think the dynamic between Jack and Meg is what propelled the Stripes so high. It's like all Jack wanted to do was get Meg to feel as much passion as he was feeling, but she was always just amicably quiet and detached, and secretly kind of anxious. It kept Jack from losing himself in his quirkiness, similar to how Lennon's cynicism kept McCartney's charm from turning into full blown schmaltz.
