Did Phantogram used to be good? Would this have been prior to 2014?

Bigboi from Outkast and Asap Rocky happend
this is that hipster duo innit?
They had a few decent songs they never managed a good album. New stuff is terrible
i only know phantogram from an amateur porn video (which was great btw)
Every band gets poppy and happy over time. I think it's because they get addicted to being on the radio, they want to replicate success, they like having people sing along at shows, they feel better about their lives, they don't want to tour forever, the music industry pushes them in that direction, they had a decade for the first album and a year for the second, and they start mistakenly thinking that they are the stars and so the music doesn't matter as much.

oh god i know exactly what you are talking about.
lmao.
big grams is fun
if you like phantogram check out sylvan esso
similar duo, similar sound, a little sparser with more of a focus on vocals

You were headed in the right direction except for a few points. The music industry doesn't push them in that direction. It's a much more open world for music now. A sandbox if you will. Another point is they don't think they're the stars. If the fame got to their head and they felt enamored by it you'd notice it in their actions and stylistic choices.
Phantogram has done nothing in those veins. I believe the music they make is just fine, and that they're just building upon what people in their fanbase desire to hear. Give them time.
I still like them, however the quality loss is noticeable. Their latest album is their weakest.

Money stupid. There's a lot more money in whatever they're making now versus "when I'm small"
