Discuss the super, super talented musician (according to Joanna Newsom) Claire Boucher. Essential rule: be nice to Grimes!

>sorry for so much social media 2day/ yesterday. in an odd series of coincidences the last few months of things ive been working on are coming out this week haha. anyway/- thanks SO much @vmagazine for putting grims on the latest cover
New interview:
>Still, Boucher’s not entirely prepared to abandon the glamour of big budget videos just yet; she has also just finished collaborating with Janelle Monáe on her video for “Venus Fly,” their shared track on Art Angels, which will serve as the 11th and final video off the album.
>As she closes the door on this album, Boucher has a calmer project in mind for the next: “I’m really vibing on making something really slow and gorgeous that just breathes, and has room to breathe. I feel like my work has always been fast paced, kinetic, and almost just manic and I feel like for me the hardest thing I can do is make something that’s slow and heavy. I’m so ADD in my work; I really want to push myself into something that would be slower and more reflective.”

I want an entire album of big, epic orchestral music from her. I know it's possible, listen to "laughing and not being normal", it sounds like the prelude to this amazing set but just...ends.
I'd really like an album where each piece flows into the next and is the same "feel" as that track.
Daft Punk did it with Tron, Grimes can do it too
>>68919187
why is she so obsessed with pokemon?
I don't have it saved but at one point she had a huge charmander sticker on her macbook. Plus it's theorized that her online username "Chairmandore" is derived from charmander.

her friends showed up in nice outfits and she rolls up in sweats, adidas slide-ons and socks that advertise that she's a stoner with greasy hair.
>>68919714
That's not a big secret at all are you kidding me
As long as she stays as healthy as she can then she can do what she wants, but if she starts to approach Eugenia Cooney levels then that's when we should be legit concerned. She's been able to maintain her current look whilst performing at high energies and (seemingly) being Ok,so if it works for her then eh.

>>68917858
Grimes interests me.
>>68920839
its called inspiration. Grimes clearly like the aesthetic of the angel costume in the madonna room and adapted it for her music video.
>>68920839
Big deal! People were inspired all the time by other things. It's not like that chick has a patent over that location and outfit.
>>68920839
The top is a film still from a music video.
The bottom is a photo from a photoshoot.
Unless this woman's photo was meant to serve as concept art for a more elaborate project (like a music video) I really don't see her point. Both things might feature a lot of the same/similar elements, but the actual things being created were completely different. There's also a WHOLE LOT more to the Grimes piece than that one still.
>>68921151
its just someone trying to claw their way to relevance by trying to tear down someone bigger than them.
nothing to see here.
>>68920839
it's most definitely blatant. as much as I like Grimes, she should've at least credited the woman with set design or whatever

>>68921631
not trying to be rude or demeaning to grimes in any way
from a conventional concept of beauty, I would be out of grimes's league. that is, society sees me as attractive; grimes not so much. the relationships I've had have been with women who are conventionally attractive as well. that being said, think grimes is very attractive t b h
I hope her new album sounds like Symphonia IX
>>68922005
Wow, that's bold. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.
>that is, society sees me as attractive; grimes not so much.
So much arrogance. Just admit it that you're plain or even ugly.
>>68922010

>>68921831
i had listened to a bit of visions before, and didn't really "get it" but went back after loving art angels and appreciated it a whole lot more.
granted that was from a time when my phone was filled to the brim with video game music, so i'd say my taste has improved to an extent
never going to delete my nobuo uematsu or kingdom hearts soundtracks though, they're too good
i agree with >>68919187 in that i would like to see her make an orchestra-esque album, maybe even a soundtrack a la daft punk with tron
>>68922185
>video game music
Nothing wrong with that. There are some video game soundtrack influences in her music anyway (mainly Zelda).
>>68922159
i have literally received offers to model. i turn them down because i'm busy all the time and i can't sit or stand still for more than ten seconds

>>68922383
no i'm too deep into law school to do that
>>68922404
Listen closely to Laughing and Not Being Normal. A very clear Zelda: Ocarina of Time soundtrack influence.
grimes is a beautiful woman, but she's so much more and to focus on that is woefully shallow and just a teensy bit misogynistic.
>>68922421
laws are like poeple, they can be broken
>>68922464
>Grimes
>Misogynistic
You fucking what?
>>68921831
When I first listened to AA, it felt different (naturally) like she was singing a whole different genre.
It's not that I necessarily gave it a verdict after the first few songs It was just different. But the lyrics are much more mature-very harsh, I'd even say, for the kind of music that was produced on it.
And that last characteristic is just something I think will always be there with Grimes, not that I'm complaining at all. It's the whole reason I stayed listening to Grimes as my fascination grew.
In short, there isn't a more abstract characteristic to give this album, other than, art. In it's purest, unique form.

>>68922577
I realized that right after I clicked send
Anyway a lot of us are fans of her because she does all of her shit on her own and it shows in the quality of her work, not just because of how she looks/her demeanor (although that certainly is a factor.)
Also, considering the format of forums like this, waifubait-posting is bound to arise with every thread across all boards in some capacity, especially if it's an artist with little news/no new releases in sight.
>>68922493
Not that anon, but read that again. Hint: he didn't say Grimes is misogynistic.
>>68919405

>>68922645

>>68921591
But she didn't design the set - and neither did Grimes. It's a pre-existing location in a tourist attraction (the Carin room in the Madonna Inn to be exact http://www.madonnainn.com/rooms/218.php ) Calling Grimes' use of the same place for set design plaigarism is like calling out someone for also using the Eiffel Tower.
The only thing truly similar about these two shots (under either of their creative control) is the use of Angel Wings, and - even there - the artistic differences in their use is striking (to anyone who has actually studied both projects.) This woman is clearly using them to represent an angel. Grimes is using them to represent a demon named IV.
>>68922689
Pretty sure Hayley is mildly liberal, but she is also a Christian, so don't know if that would make Claire feel oppressed ;^)
>>68922661
I'm sure that most Grimes fans love her mainly because of her music. Knowing that she did all that sound work just makes the emotional connection stronger. Her music is a pure expression of her creativity, not spoiled by external factors.

>>68922997
I have never seen or heard Claire, in any interview, announce her religious affiliation, if any. Hayley has stated on many occasions to believe in Jesus Christ, which is pretty explicit.
>>68922900
>then that person is a Grimes fan for life.
Or maybe not, if that fan rejects pop music. I think that in order to truly appreciate her music you must like both pop and experimental music.
>CB: [Laughs] Everyone calls us hipsters, and we decided we’re not really hipsters. We were trying to decide where we fit in the spectrum of sub-genres, and we kind of concluded that we’re surrealist yuppies, because we’re really into mainstream pop music and hi-fi things and catchy things and making things awesome. We’re into working really hard and eating healthy food and exercising, and we’re also really into psychedelic experimentation and being weird. Obviously doing weird things with our music.

Imo that nameless song is the closest thing there is to the pure unadulterated id of Grimes' music. The very thing that Grimes prefers to mold and shape into compatibility with more conventional forms/styles of music rather than feature in her art/music directly - as an artistic choice:
>“I try to make it digestible to a degree.” Why? “That’s what I’m interested in seeing. I create a thing that I wish existed in the world, versus my own full unabashed creative expression.”
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/oct/31/claire-boucher-grimes-art-angels
If you truly love the sound of it then it will keep you a fan of her music for the rest of your life (regardless of whatever particular music styles she happens to be cloaking it with Klingon-style at any given time) because that is the ONLY place you will ever be able to find it. To expand on what I said here >>68922929 - Art Angels is single-handedly responsible for opening my eyes to the fact that it is possible to produce high art within the context of contemporary pop music (because, if you listen closely, you can still hear her musical id in it.)
Obviously you're gonna enjoy it more if you overtly enjoy pop music. But to the true hardcore fan of what makes her music unique (that pure unadulterated id) the presence of pop/whatever other style should come as no deterrent.

She really needed to make an aggressive album. Don't forget she has ADHD. But now she could focus on making slower music.
>>68924638
Visions
>>68924378
It's called Participation Bias. People who feel the need to complain about things often end up being the dominant voices in a crowd (no matter how small a portion of the crowd they are) because people who are content have a tendency to not say anything. Based on things like Youtube views and concert-going audience reception, Medieval Warfare and Go are two of her most successful tracks to date.

Where else on the internet would you find such intelligent discussion ;)

I got the impression her parents only supported her musical activities when her recognition became obvious. I know her dad accompanied her on a tour before visions came out. As far as i'm concerned No one was aware of her drug use and other methods during recording if that's what you're referring to. They probably don't agree with it, even though they had/still have a pretty liberal stance on drug politics.

>Shooting on an iPhone during Boucher's European tour earlier this year, the team captured an ecstatic array of sights to accompany songs by both Grimes and Hana. The fleetness and flexibility of such a small team and simple equipment appealed to Boucher on several levels. "I was just really exhausted from doing a bunch of 'real' videos...You know, when you have gaffers and lights and, like, thirty people working on something, and you're just organizing and sending emails," she says. "You don't really get to improvise or have any creative freedom by the time you are actually shooting."
>She had a hand in every aspect of the filmmaking, from location scouting to styling. Breathtaking shots of verdant mountains in Montreux, Switzerland, and Wales' Chepstow Castle, built in the 11th century, punctuate the videos. While the locations might be European, Boucher says that her interest in these spectacular vistas derived from the location-oriented nature of Bollywood movies, and how they translate the world around us to create an "ethereal, super gorgeous vibe." Dancers Alyson Van and Linda Davis, who tour with Boucher and are "incredibly essential to the show," improvised new choreography for the short films.
>Boucher looks carefree throughout The Acid Reign Chronicles, despite suffering from stage fright. "I really feel quite uncomfortable being in front of a camera and performing," Boucher says. But being in charge of the filmmaking process helped immensely with that: "It's good to make your own music videos because you can tightly control everything." At one point during the video for Grimes' song "World Princess Part II," Boucher and Hana start goofing around with umbrellas—first, on a bridge, then, inside some kind of fort—and it looks like pure fun. They look like women who know they're in charge, and they look like they love it.

>“My grandma really likes it and my brother, who doesn’t play music, really likes it. And that’s one of the things that really got me excited about it; is that I think you don’t need a lot of musical experience to make stuff that sounds good or professional with it,” musician Grimes said.

>>68939792
>Where'd she get all the money for that?
By earning them, idiot. She sold some albums, toured hard and earned money. Her income grew proportionally with her popularity.
>>68939853
The production value of her videos isn't cheap. She had help, and by help, I mean talent scouts and a label.

Grimes likes girls, orgies, and vibrators
>>68939869
>She had help, and by help, I mean talent scouts and a label.
She's signed to a label, 4AD. Do you know how record labels work with artists? You sign a contract, they give you some money (advance) to make albums and then they try to recoup the investment in you. The music videos are usually funded by label. They're considered marketing tools (now that you're so obsessed with marketing teams).
>The production value of her videos isn't cheap.
There are 2 kind of Grimes videos:
- cheap ones: Realiti, Vanessa, Oblivion, Crystal Ball, Nightmusic, Butterfly, Belly of the Beat, WP2, SCREAM
- more expensive ones: Kill V. Maim, FWB, California, Genesis, Go
Grimes funded the more expensive videos from her own money made from modelling and maybe some money from her label.

Speaking of talent scouts, check this out.
Grimes was initially signed to a really small Canadian indie label, Arbutus. They exploited her a lot (mainly they forced her to tour a lot, owned the right of her albums). In 2011, before her breakthrough Visions, she signed a contract with 4AD. Read for yourself how desperate they were to sign her...
>Who Says Girls Can't Find Music? We Talked to the Female A&R Who Signed Grimes
>Because of the internet, there’s so much information all the time. It’s not about when you hear about someone, it’s about when they grab your attention so hard you can’t ignore it anymore. With Grimes, I was already aware of her, she’d made two albums and an EP. I was on my way to Pop Montreal, and I met her manager at the time, who ran the label she was on, and found out that they were looking for a partnership, someone that they could work with outside of Canada. Her music at that point was not obviously commercial, so they were talking to independent labels. There were a lot who really liked her, but I remember Claire saying we were pretty much the only ones who would take Visions and put it out just as it was, other labels apparently asked for her to rework it with a producer.

>>68939869
[2 / 2]
>The other thing I would say about Grimes is that there was so much happening around her at that time that I assumed she was already working with a bigger label. The first time I went to see her play and I was kicking myself for missing that opportunity. It was the best show I’d seen for a new artist at that time. The next day I met her manager and they said they were looking for partners and I literally ran back to my room to email my boss her record. What I’m trying to say is that you don’t need a label anymore to get things started, a good label will enhance what you are already doing. By the time Claire was signed, she was already releasing records on a small imprint, touring and doing interviews, and she had a visual presence. These days, a label has the most impact if you’ve already got the wheels in motion before they’ve got involved.

>Where'd she get all the money for that? Exactly, not self made.
The label just lent her some money, asshat. That it's still considered self-made, because she built her career on her own. No one came to make her songs or to produce them or even draw the artwork.

>If the money was given to her, she;s not self made.
Huh? If you lend money from a bank and open your own Facebook it means you're not self made? You missed the economy classes, isn't it?
And speaking of DIY, she made her first money from touring. She realized she could have a music career after she earned 200 dollars or something after a show. If you're posting on /grimes/ at least learn something about her.
>>68939869
That's because she's exceptionally skilled at making cheap things look nicer than they really are.
>>68940561
Exactly. She started making music probably in 2007, released her first 2 albums in 2010, and then only in 2011 she got a very small budget to make her first video, Vanessa. Her first big buget video Genesis has been made in 2012 only after the big success of the cheaply made video of Oblivion. She was already established by then. Nobody gave her money because she's Grimes.
>>68940523
Grimes is an artist. She takes money (either hers or that provided to her by her label) and uses it to fund her own efforts to create art. She is a self-made artist.
