I unironically enjoy it. It has a charming atmosphere and makes me feel pretty nostalgic. While it is a disappointing follow up to Filosofem, it's to be expected for an album released from prison. Still though, Hliðskjálf is much better.

This just sounds like Runescape music to me.

You'd probably like his new stuff. This is the best track of this style I think. Sol Austan Mani Vestan is really consistent, and The Ways of Yore is less consistent but has a couple of these spoken word songs that are a real treat.

This is the only song I remember clearly from Hlidskjalf but I think it's the best thing he ever made, especially reading along with the accompanying text while listening.
-
"Alone in the night, Fijo is crying; she has been left by her
husband who had to leave to fight the darkness of matter.
Thoughts of what once was flow through her mind; their play in
the green grass and under colourful trees, wonderful fields of
flowers, fresh fruits and berries, and beautiful music from the
elven choirs. Running waters make them dream, lakes where they
bathed, riverfalls and marvelous clouds in the sky. They were
happy, they had their Golden Age. Now, all she has left are her
Golden Tears, that run from her skyblue eyes, as a witness to
what once was - to what is lost forever; until a New World is
born, after Ragnarok. In the meantime, give our dear Fijo some
warm thoughts, to help her through the cold nights."

Just spent most of the last hour reading up on Varg. I've seen his picture around before, never knew where/what he was from (to be honest, I thought he was some sort of computer programmer based off his picture) but holy shit. Dude has had a pretty shitty time.

All the while was listening to the album OP posted which was a pretty good ambient album to be listening to while reading his bio. I had to echo what some previous poster had said though, it really just sounds like a Gothic-themed area in some MMO game. Not bad, but looking him up it claims that his music is Black Metal which I would personally disagree with.

Have you listened to any black metal before? Varg has made lots of different sounding music throughout his life as Burzum. The first four or so albums are definitely black metal, and essential albums at that. Both Daudi Baldrs and Hliðskjálf were albums made in prison, where the only instrument he had was a keyboard. Since his release from prison, he went on to release three more black metal albums and two ambient folk albums. Filosofem is widely considered to be his magnum opus, and a peak in black metal.

I'm sure I have listened to some as I have a few friends that listen to the genre but honestly cannot name any bands. I've been trying to increase my 'metal repertoire' and so I've been starting with Heavy Metal (some of the classics so to speak) and trying to go from there. If you have any suggestions as to where to start (aside from Burzum of course) please point me in the right direction!

do you realize that he's a white supremacist and an anti-semite?

If you are enjoying Heavy Metal then chances are you'll like Bathory, which is probably the most important 1st wave black metal band. The first five or six Bathory albums are all great, with the first three being more trash oriented, while the next three are more folk and Viking, with all of them have a pretty big black metal influence in them. Also Celtic Frost is worth a listen is well.

Afterwards, move on to the 2nd wave in Norway, where black metal really developed into what it is today and most of the historic events of the genre took place during the early 90's. The four most important bands in this scene are Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, and Immortal. All of these bands have a phenomenal discography worth listening to.

Darkthrone's unholy trinity (A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon, and Transylvanian Hunger) are all considered classics, with A Blaze in the Northern Sky being consider the first true black metal album.

Mayhem has a couple essential Live albums and EP's, but De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is their best album, and make the best black metal album ever. It's also an interesting album, since the lyrics were written by the influential lead singer who killed himself, while the bassist (Varg) killed the guitarist.

Burzum is my personal favorite band. The first four albums from him are phenomenal and really worth listening to. Daudi Baldrs really doesn't come close to comparison with them.

Immortal also has quite a few great albums out. At the Heart of Winter is their best though.

The thing about all these bands is that they've all influenced a certain style of black metal, so depending on which albums you've enjoyed, it should be easy to find more similar albums.

Gotta spread some love for this excellent /mu/ release.

I think the theme was runescape music or something like that. There are actually a couple of good songs on here!

Speaking of 1st wave BM, how's Blasphemy?

Does anyone know which scales he uses on the album? Is it like gregorian mode?

pretty sure he isn't a white supremacist. just a nationalist.
>>
>>68854241
Huh wow, not sure if he's a nationalist but he's definitely a white supremacist
>>
He has said that he doesn't think of other races as lesser, just that they should stick to their own
And there is literally nothing wrong with nationalism

ooo I love Fallen Angel of Doom. It's much more raw and aggressive than most black metal, and is pretty much considered to be black metal. Good band.
>>
It's shit. And I like Burzum. Hvis Lyset Tar oss is best album
>>
>>68850585
He's just really national socialist
>>
Love Daudi Baldrs!!
>>
>>68849610
He's released 2-3 (i say 2-3 because one of the albums is only half ambient) ambient albums, during his prison stint, but outside of that he's made a lot different kinds of black metal worth checking out.

Entry level varg I'd say listen to Fallen

Cheesy Runescape midis. Varg had made really good ambient before he went to jail but these albums are just so lame in comparison.

>Sol Austan Mani Vestan is really consistent
I've listened to it countless times.
Taking a nap while listening to it is incredibly soothing.

>>68848407
>>68848443
I think the synths really don't do justice to thess album, I can't take it seriously, same goes with Summoning and pretty much dungeonsynth as a whole

>>68857300
Honestly, Burzum as a whole is rather entry level, aside from Filosofem which may be hard to listen to if you're not used to wall of sound/noisy production.
