I tried re-mixing some old songs I recorded, do they sound decent?
>>
>>68844814
just recorded or wrote as well? regardless i like these songs anon, v comfy. the guitars might be panned a bit too far either side but it's hard 2 tell without hearing it more closed.

on another note does any1 have any recommendations for a saxophone vst
>>
Just a reminder that if you post a clyp in here and people don't comment on it, it doesn't mean it's bad, it usually just means it's to mainstream or too good and that you probably have a future in music compared to most of the bitter losers on here.

Check out kontakt ultimate I think that might be right up your alley

https://clyp.it/va5hmrr4

A song I've been working on the past day; the first vers. has a same piano progression over both of the loud portions, but the second one only has it in the latter portion. I like the tune a lot but I can't decide if I should keep it in the second one, and add a less 'conclusive' progression over the first part, mayb on another instrument. i dont rlly have much knowledge of composition i just write what i enjoy listening to so i dont really have too much inclination towards either plan. also thinking of adding some secondary lead over the quiet portion in the centre, but i havent decided on what yet.
>>
>>68845261
Thanks anon, I wrote them too.

>>
Should I use FLAC or OGG for the source files when I distribute an album digitally?
>>
>>68846746
>>68846746
hmm well my son lets think about this logically, is OGG lossless? mmk then
>>
>>68846864
Well I was reading this article and if you scroll down you see that they actually reccommend OGG, how do you feel about this ?

http://libremusicproduction.com/articles/what-audio-file-format-and-which-should-i-use
>>
>>68846864
>>68846908
My bad maybe they are just saying it is an equal alternative. But still why do they recommend OGG first?
>>
So uh, I mentioned before about recording my upright piano, and here's my plan for how to do it.

Buy two 2020 mics, and two mic stands, XLR cables and mic them, while connecting those two mics to my 2i2. Problem is, do I have to care about the room condition if I'm not planning to record room ambience? The room I'm in is actually my living room which has pretty bad sound proofing obviously.
>>
guess I'll just post my stupid question here

If I have a PA system and a mixer, I can play multiple sources through the system right? Like I can play my laptop and vocals through it?
>>
>>68847013
Yes, those microphones will still pick up a lot of room sound. In general, unless you're close micing something really loud and ONLY close micing that, room sound matters.

However, it depends on what you're planning on doing with said recordings. If you're just gonna share it with your friends or have it be a first release on bandcamp or something, it probably won't matter really.
>>
>>68847509
does your mixer have more than one input (it should)? Then yes!
>>
https://clyp.it/4zareyq2
https://clyp.it/ckxqeh3z

are these rappable
>>
>>68848257
yes they both are, the first one more than the second one. But I find that they are both too loud. unless these are 'final release' levels then you should try to mix at low-ish volume. Gives a better mix because if a mix sounds well at low volume it will also sound good at high volume. Plus less ear fatigue and I find I can be more precise when the volume's not so loud.

The spectrum on the second one has practically no space for the vocals. Good job on both tracks, though. I'd like to hear the first one with some good rhymes over it.
>>
>>68848550
thanks, my IRL rapper friends always say my stuff isn't rappable at all. I guess its too busy
>>
>>68846955
Because OGG is a compressed open source codec like FLAC is a lossless open source codec? And the website has "libre" in the domain?

any feedback would help, the switchup (1:48) I've been working on for a week and bridging with the core of the track has become a chore

safe

>>68844814
your vocals are too low, i'd suggest knocking off some frequencies for other instruments around 2k - 4k to open them up a bit

the vocal melodies aren't really offering anything of value ever, although they do pick up in the chorus, the mixing's a little too wide

but otherwise I do like

>>68845727
your melodies are getting better, sounding really nice, piano sound reminds of ravedeath, really good

keep it up

>>68848257
your hats are far too high in the mix, like the sound overall just tone down the hats

in relation to your question, yes as long as you give room in the mix, you have a few synth melody lines which would have to go if a rapper came in on the track

otherwise good

>>68848671
there are some glimpses of some nice melody lines but a lot of meandering to nothing, also some dissonant notes which aren't offering anything

cut up phrases which work and move on, 0:37 to 0:49 is nice

>>68854898

I do my cropping in the clip overview in Session View instead of importing the audio into Simpler straight away - using the "Crop" function after setting start and end points places the cropped sample into the project folder.

This is usually enough but some people have mentioned that the crop function still leaves a small portion of audio at either end of the sample, might be on older versions of Ableton as I haven't seen this myself but if you do see that happening there's another step needed - drag the cropped clip into Arrangement View and use the "Consolidate" function - the consolidated clip will then also be placed into the project folder and you can use that in your Simpler instances.

besides that it sounds nice
>>
Been working on this for 200+ hours (not mastered yet)
https://clyp.it/fa5e0icx
The retarded synth solo at the beginning needs a bit of fixing, but I think the whole mix sounds pretty well

Besides that, two questions:
- Is it okay to start a new track when you're working on an unfinished one, or should you avoid taking the risk of wiping the mindset you had while doing the unfinished one?
- FLS users, is it okay to master a track with Maximus when you're probably not able to master with a regular compressor?
I know how compressors work (basically), I know what they do, but I do have a hard time hearing the difference while turning the knobs, which makes me rely a lot on the visual aids, and there may not always be visual aids. So I was wondering if I wasn't skipping steps somehow.

And thank you for these links, OP!

>Is it okay to start a new track when you're working on an unfinished one, or should you avoid taking the risk of wiping the mindset you had while doing the unfinished one?
depends on you really. if you're getting jammed up on a track you can switch to a another unfinished one and work on that, but you might start getting into the habbit of constantly starting new tracks and never finishing anything. up to you honestly

have a focusrite solo gen 2, can't set the playback to mono without getting a bunch of static, can only run it to 2 channels instead of 1.

I go playback>focusrite USB>Properties>Advanced>Default Format>Set either to 1 channel 24 or 1 channel 16 and no matter what, I constantly get static. I have to set it to 2 channels or else it won't work.

I'd say you should buy our Ableton Push 2.1 Beta version and upgrade your Ableton license to get access to special custom synth VSTs that are the industry standard if you won't to make music seriously.

it's not great sounding, btw. I'm using 4 track cassette which eats away at a lot of the sound quality, and some parts have clipping which I couldn't get rid of for some reason.

Anyway, it's supposed to be for an end part of a song where it just loops over and over again. When the section starts fading/all that's left is the oscilating delay is when the next track is supposed to slowly fade in. Also going to cut it down to like 45 seconds once I figure out which textures I want/the ones I want to cut.

https://clyp.it/lpbrx5uf

If you want, skip to like 1:30 and just listen to the last 30 seconds or so. My computer isn't good enough to risk cutting and pasting once it's recorded to audacity.

Looks real retro. Lindo like a prophet. What type of synth is it?

I've actually been debating on buying Zebra2 (or Serum) for the past two months. After using the demo for both I can see both are super capable but honestly I find Zebra2 more fun to use. But Serum has waaay better presets.

Do you use it? If so what do you like it and why would you recommend it?

Seconding turning down your hats. I'd also recommend a kick with more sustain over time or a bassline to fill low end space. Maybe the ambience and sort of goofy synth tone are what your friend thinks makes it unrappable. Does he do more hardcore stuff or something?

I have a mixer, it's more of like an amp mixer, noisey preamps. i'm trying to get rid of it. currently, I don't really have a need for more than 2 inputs now, but could see maybe needing at least 4 for drums later. I think I'm going to get a reel to reel recorder, and in that case I'll need some additional outputs (I'm assuming RCA outputs as well). I guess maybe I could just run my two outputs to a mixer and run the RCA from there. idk, thoughts? Kind of at a pivotal point where I don't know what I need to accomplish what I want.

A question from a noob like me, how can I mix this better (I use Ableton.)?
Also, what are your thoughts on the snare, I'm not sure if I made the right choice.
I know this is trash, but I want to at least make my first good song mixing wise, but all I got are some shitty Xiamoi earbuds.

Are the AKG K240 any good, those are the ones I see mentioned a lot that are in my poorfag price range.

>>
>>68867948

>>
>>68867968
That wasn't original the issue, the issue was promoting yourself as "yung ___" with he trap beats that took an hour of effort hoping to get popular. Soundcloud is filled with McProducers and no one is trying to stand out, just replicate sounds.

yeah, i mean you can use your headphones in your headphone jack in your computer, but depending upon the impedance level of your headphones, your computer might not drive your them to be very loud, thus entering the headphone amp or interface. so with just headphones, no, you could probably use an amp if you want to save money. if you're wanting both monitors and nicer headphones, then just invest in an audio interface. that way you'll have stereo output and headphone port
