I really love 0PN but RP7 is not wholly unique. It's a pastiche/tribute to library/new age music from the 80's.

Lopatin's entire discography is like that but it's heavy on RP7. Check out some new age artists, check out Jon Hassell - Aka/Dabari/Java (not new age but you'll probably love his shit).

The synths and some samples are intentionally kitschy/referential, but I think the way things are arranged and composed is quite unique and personal.

Same for Replica and Eccojams and his sunsetcorp Youtube. "Nobody Here" at first glance could be considered very unoriginal and lazy. A newcomer could say it's literally just a slowed down infinitely repeating 8 bar loop from an old song. But it's so much more than that (I'd elaborate but no one would care). His whole style is turning what should be unoriginal and cliche into something unique.

Absolutely, but OPN differs from them because he uses really exotic and intuitive compositional techniques (mostly with rhythm and polymetric layering, but also functional and non-functional harmony). He also is the better producer and mixer, and is super clever with samples in ways they aren't.

I love Ferraro and Blunt and think they're both very creative and individually unique, but OPN is the best in that field.
>>
>>68836152
>I think the way things are arranged and composed is quite unique and personal.
Of course. That's why I love OPN. That's why OPN is admired throughout...almost everywhere. He applies stimulating and unique ideas to old concepts.

Not wholly unique =/= referential garbage

I hate typing on a phone and could write a full post later today.

It might not make much sense if you don't have much production knowledge.

The tl;dr is that the genius of the Eccojam style is the pitch shifting reverb plugins he uses and the subtle things going on in the background that provide slight rhythmic and harmonic changes to essentially create a long-form song out of a simple loop. The loop usually remains interesting the whole time because there are quiet non-looping parts which softly affect everything else due to the shared reverb (and maybe other weird FX plugins going through the same shared bus ("chain")). For example, you may not notice, but there are very quiet synth chords he's adding to each loop iteration.

I think he might be doing more than this, like probably making slight symmetric automations in the chord synth patch or vocals or the reverb or other FX, at very carefully chosen times and slopes, to create even more movement. He might even be slightly editing and cutting some iterations of the loop so it'll sometimes be a little early or late, but I'm unsure, as that could kind of be an artifact of the other stuff he's doing (except when it's blatant in a few of the Eccojams).

That's just my take on it. I could be incorrect. Also I guess that's not actually a tldr at all.
>>
>>68836278
OPN is literally progressive electronics/"""new age""" with a pop twist. Barely anything interesting about him. Blunt is a talentless hack and wont even comment him. As for Ferraro he is infinitely superior to both of them and any other artist of this century without Spencer.
>>
>>68837053
Ferraro might be more interesting when it comes to concepts and artistic statements (though I'd mostly disagree even there), but OPN is the better musician.
>>
>>68837086
>to concepts and artistic statements
I don't care about that when I judge musicians. OPN is using just the same sounds in the same way and its not even that good. Nothing remarkable able about him. And the worst thing is that he rips off Philip Glass.
>>

I don't agree. I think he removes them from their original context. Also, I like Philip Glass and OPN is certainly inspired by him, but his 3 most recent albums are pretty varied from each other and in their songs. There are a few songs on each album that make me think "this could be a Philip Glass/Steve Reich piece", but even in those he adds his own unique touches.

Ferraro is a great composer no doubt, but I'd say his albums are actually more internally homogeneous than any of OPN's. He might not copy others, but he often copies himself. OPN rarely ever does that (though I've noticed it 2-3 times).

I just think opn and blunt are on a different level. they have no problem mixing in "weird" territory and doing well in it

opn took on edm with god
blunt took on trap/hip hop

ferraro just sticks his feet in with his talent then just leaves. his discog suffers from ONE AMAZING IDEA that he never follows up properly
>>
>>68837214
Karaoke is not unique and neither are arpeggios.
>>68837330
Pre chuck opn is using the same presets and sometimes even melodies. His "vaporwave"era is as stereotypical as it gets. Replica and r+7 has few bearable tracks, nothing unique that has not been done and adding few touches doesn't make it unique.
>>68837359

>>
>>68837532
Pre-Chuck OPN is less creative and certainly uses default new-agey presets, but not the same melodies. Maybe he borrows some older melodic phrases then expands on them. Can you link a song he's done, no matter how old, with an unoriginal and copied melody?
>>
>>68837643
Its probably because you either never paid attention to it or listened to it only once with which you will most likely not hear even half of the music. Also there is a thing called being a reddit pleb who only enjoys straightforward music that has the same pop structure.

He's still making music, just not releasing any of it due to depression. I talked to him via e-mail a few months ago, and he told me he'd sort of just been making half-finished tracks (like what was in Mostly Trash, Dreadful John, and Sanpaku Island), but that he'd moved recently and was starting to work on fully fleshed out tracks again

What do you mean by that? Most of his early melodies are as generic as it gets and even on his Garden album you can see how simple they are. I'm pretty sure some song in rifts are almost repeating themselves. The one I can think of considering I have not listened to him for so long is about physical memory is really similar to emil cioran.

I can only wish to be him, kek. Anyway.
Because he is better in every way. But if you don't like him I don't think there is a point in explaining why. Every project of him is completely different and his music is actually about the concept rather than just using it as a theme. If you listen is a just album it wont work, its really imagery. As for composing he actually has the most intriguing melodies that really matches whatever he is aiming for and he is just amazing at getting the right atmosphere. If the thread is up tomorrow I will as any other questions you have.
