How can I learn to solo like J Mascis?
>>
That pick guard there is pretty. My favorite Fender Medium picks have that same sort of design, does it have a name?

Here's my thing 'o' the day: is guitar hard? I've played since I was a kid but only ever play by myself. I've never been in a band, I've never jammed with someone, none of that. But my younger brother knows piano and sax and can read music and thought he would be able to pick up playing Ukulele quickly, and he is head over heels on that fucking thing. I grabbed it from him and basically knew exactly what to do--ukulele seems like dumb guitar, in the sweetest sense.

He was kind of jelly, but I just never thought that guitar was hard to learn--or harder than other instruments. Although, I guess it's hard enough for the 10,000,000 people who own guitars but can't play them to not ever care enough to really try?

So, guitar friends, where does a guitar (or any string instrument) rank in terms of difficulty, among other instruments?

How do I learn to solo? I can play little licks and riffs and stuff but do straight-up cutaway into a solo eludes me. Where should I start?
>>
>>68820372

All instruments are hard anon, even the recorder when you're a little kid who just wants to watch cartoons.

>>68820372

Celluloid picks? I love the fender mediums too but they wear down way too fast for me. I switched over to jazz IIIs but I think I should have tried other celluloid picks .

Going to attempt to clean my pots tonight with the contact spray I bought.

Hope I don't fuck up.
>>
>>68820879
It's a simple task, really
>>
>>68820932
really makes you wonder how inexperienced or just incompetent a lot of people are that they're afraid of changing strings or using contact spray
>>
>>68820372
Instrument difficulty... first for reference I have played trombone, guitar and bass guitar seriously in the past. Dabbled, as in tried a few times just to see how it felt, with a bunch of other stuff. No instrument is easy, all are hard to very hard to master.

Guitar is fairly straightforward relative to a lot of other instruments. Only piano, xylophone, drums so on are more simple. I suppose tonally drums is the easiest because you only have a limited range of notes you can produce and your primary objective is rhythm.

When i said simple above I meant in the sense that, with piano for instance, you press the desired key and the desired note plays:

>Guitar and the other stringed instruments have two things to produce a note, fretting the note and plucking/using some technique or tool to sound the string (plus complexity if instrument has no frets).
>Woodwinds, blow in to mouthpiece/reed, finger the single button or combination of buttons to produce your note. Control breathing in accordance with phrasing

>Brass, vibrate your lips at the correct rate in order to produce desired range, press button or combination of buttons, position slide etc, control breathing in accordance with your phrasing.

>Accordian, finger button combinations with both right and left hands, control the air input in the same way you would with a horn only you're using a bellows instead

I guess I would rate them something like drums and percussion < piano and other keys < stringed instruments < harmonica = woodwinds < brass < complex things like accordian

In practice the order may be a bit different, it does depend on your role in a band and your talent as far as dexterity, breath control, embouchure, stamina, whatever.
>>
So, how many of us worship Froosh?
>>
>>68820400
>>68820506

Just to expand on this a little,

basically, you when you're soloing, you want to solo over whatever chord is currently happening in the progression, rather than just going through some scale that covers the key of the song as a whole.

There's a really good, but dense video on it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKe5jX-5pII

I can't explain too well as I'm don't know how to solo, but some other anon may be able to tell you more if you still feel there's something missing.
>>
Go doom larping with a shitty ss combo amp in your bedroom or go home

I just bought a jaguar for $1800 on sale

Post boardzzz

I need 2 alternate tuned 9 strings to hit every note for ever instead of learbi g my fretboard

I just spent $3000 from a student loan buying flangers that were all clones of a shitty dod flanger but they used high quality parts like NOS caps and NOS 9 volts

Why would you pay so much for a jaguar when you can get one thats just as good for $200

You dont need pedals you just need to practice

Maybe if i spend a lot of money buying good gear i can trash talk everyone, here, ill post my epiphone g310 so they know im serious. Its tuned to drop A, it sounds super gnarly on my rogue 20 watt

Oh, I forgot two. The grand-daddies of fuck off hard to play instruments: bagpipes and pedal steel guitar (complete with all the pedals and knee levers to mess with relative intonation).

And pipe organ, because you're essentially playing two or three pianos all at once.
>>

>>
>>68821970
>>68821988

I bought the first (bottom) one from a guy, then brought it home to find the chorus/vibrato didn't work. He had also changed the original speakers, so it didn't even sound like a fuckin jazz chorus anymore. I was too green to figure these things out at the time.

Fast forward a couple months and I see an all original one at a local shop. I went and tried it out...sounded so good, so I picked it up.

The bottom one has a great clean sound...a lot different than jazz choruses. More warm (doesn't have the metal cones in the speakers). I usually swap between them when I want the different sounds, but sometimes I run them in parallel sending only reverb/other effects to the bottom one and a clean signal to the top one.

I know it's weird...but it sounds cool.
>>
>tfw I've got a $600 electric but I play it less than my $5 acoustic.

>>
>>68822005

Yeah, they're great. Serious amps. I had never been floored by a solid state amp before, but they're great.

>>68822044

Acoustic is a Takamine N-10 which i thinkis from the 80's sometime. Sounds great. It's a bit dark usually, but with some bright strings it sounds rich and balanced.

Is basswood too soft for a body? I heard it dents too easily.
>>
>>68822772
mine? a sunburst Jazz bass knockoff

but I was talking about the bass of the song being beautiful
>>
>>68822929
I have an old Ibanez that is basswood. Never had a problem with denting. I mean as long as it's painted (not a varnished and glossed wood) you have a thick layer of primer and paint protecting the body anyway.
>>
>>68822955
ah my bad bud, either way a jazz bass always looks nice, and yessir it does a have a good bass in it.
>>
How do i learn guitar?

So far i know EAD chords and how to solo based off them. I know music theory already.

I just find guitar terrible to learn compared to piano and brass
>>
>>68823094
it sounds like you need help on the mechanics of physically playing the instrument, only years of practice will allow your muscles to git gud

study technique, like classical technique, and alternate picking.
>>
>>68822972
So a basswood-body Squier with a sunburst finish won't dent easily? the body is my main concern when choosing my next guitar. The price jump to an Alder body is a bit much and I could use the money to put a nice pickup and an EQ pedal.
>>
>>68822657
Just find a string set that could suit you and use an online string tension calculator to find the tension you want. Getting a new guitar because of tuning problems is silly unless you're trying baritone or open tunings like CGCGCE while keeping one in standard.
>>
>>68823170
Nah, I wouldn't worry about it.
>>
How do I write licks like Real Estate or Built to Spill?

I feel like all of the licks I write are just bastardizations of their songs and if anyone knew their songs they'd simply be able to tell.

Is there some aspect of theory which is very applicable to writing easy, 2 guitar slack-mode riffs?
>>
>>68823170
basswood is cheap garbage and alder is a tonewood used in fine musical instruments. why do you think theres a price jump you idiot?
>>
>>68823290
>tonewood
Alder sounds brighter, yeah, but I want to use a bridge humbucker and I play mostly with OD.

The CV DOES seem much nicer, though. I want a guitar for many years, even if I need to upgrade the electronics, hardware eventually.
>>
What are the best exercises to improve your phrasing? Which exercise was the one that helped your phrasing become more "musical" and less "scalar".
>>
>>68823886
Tom Kolb's books. Amazing Phrasing has lots of exercises on particular techniques, Soloing Strategies is more about improvisation itself and how to effectively use scales outside of those linear box shapes we usually learn them at first.
>>
>>68823094
>I know music theory already.
Then why do you only know three chords?
>>
>>68824127
obviously i "know" more, i just cant transition to the properly yet. Like i can play those 3 in rapid succession and play around with them easily.

>>68823128
yeah fair point, my alternative picking it quite robotic at this point
>>
>>68824194

>>
That exactly what I need, I need to start using scales "effectively" instead of just going up and down in them. I am practicing with less notes and trying to come up with interesting licks, and while it works, I still feel like I need something to go further. Thanks for the suggestions anon.

I started playing a classical guitar a few weeks again and I have trouble playing the high action nylon strings and the big neck.
Any tips or exercises to practice?
>>
>>68826033
Keep your fingering hand in the claw shape and anchor your thumb to the middle of the back of the neck. Classical guitar is very technique-based compared to steel-string. I suggest watching some people play to get a sense of how to sit and hold the guitar, since it's designed to be played a certain way

In general, not really. If you can't get reasonably good at guitar after a year or so of steady practice you should probably kys.

That said it does depend to an extent on how you play and what your background is. Guitar wasn't tough for me because I already have a background on piano and I don't find guitar particularly challenging in comparison, but if I were trying to do complicated fingerstyle or jazz guitar I might not feel that way.

Practice yeah but make sure your strings aren't set too low. That would be really frustrating as a beginner thinking you're just not pressing down hard enough when it's actually partly a setup problem.

Kek, sure you can. All a whammy pedal will do is give you a stiff digital sounding approximation with the added handicap of having to control it with your foot. If all you want to do is wacky divebombs, then sure it could work as a substitute

I don't regret my 2014 LPJ purchase for a nanosecond. That said, I played Les Pauls between $1800-4000 that day with the intent of buying any of them, and the fucking $800 model is the one that felt the best. Two years on and I have absolutely no issues whatsoever. My Ibanez needs an entire new bridge, and a rewiring, and the Telecaster needs its pickup switch rewired. But I work 10 hour days and don't got no time for that.

Gibsons are as dodgy as they have been for 20 years, but they are 'recovering' from the ghastly fuck ups of the mid 2000's- but barely. Quality control is still worse than a sine wave in terms of quality. You might get a 2017 Les Paul made on a wednesday afternoon that is perfect for you, only to go back to the store and instead pick up and play the same Les Paul model made on a friday evening and find that it plays like garbage. There is no consistency.

I have the feeling that I just can't express myself with my current instrument. I'll have to find a luthier that'll build me a 7-string bass with partial fretting (3 highest strings fretted, 4 lowest strings fretless) with frets that have a smooth transition from jumbo on the highest to tiny on the lower string which then turns into a strip of metal as fret markers on the fretless side. Multiscale/fanned frets with slanted pickups (Humbucker Singlecoil Humbucker with a piezo in the bridge, coil split and serial parallel for the Humbuckers, separate pot for each pickup), active electronics with a graphical 9-band EQ on the bass, hollowbody, headless, with a variable fingerboard radius that becomes round enough close to the bridge that you can use a bow on it. Rarewood top on an ash body with a 13-piece neck.
I have about 13,000$ available for this, do you guys know a luthier who is up for the job?

Locking in with the drums, having exceptional and (ideally) independent time, filling the correct sonic space (providing low end most of the time, sometimes you need to fill in somewhere else though), etc. View the bass as a rhythm instrument (at least if you're starting out) it'll make more sense for you that way. If you're really new, work on your muting daily. No unwanted notes should be ringing in the background, ever. And practice proper legato playing even when switching your left hand position.

Guitar newfag here, got a stupid question. Is there a "tone guide" of sorts somewhere that one could read? Like, some source of info that basically tells you how to get a certain sound, as in what equipment to use and so on. I've got the basics of guitar down to a point where I can sorta fuck around and play something I want to play, but I'm missing the exact sound of how I imagine it sounding in my head.

Or maybe you could help my dumb ass out, since I'm nowhere near the level of being able to figure this shit out for myself. What I'm looking for is a way to get ultra-low, heavy sounds, as well as high-pitch "screams" that sound like your amp is about to explode. I've tried using my amp's overdrive and EQ for the first and a borrowed fuzz for the second, but it's nowhere near. Here's a tune that has a close sound of both those tones so you could imagine what I'm talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcMz3aAZDv4

Just listen to the first 20-25 seconds and you'll get the idea of the sort of sound I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
>>

>>
>>68832840
I realize that, and I'm not looking to replicate some exact song, I just want to know what sort of gear I would need to reach the very depths and heights of guitar tone. I find that just fucking around and experimenting with various bits of noise is what brings me the most joy right now, instead of playing some actual tunes. Besides, I love learning new stuff about guitar rigs as well.

>>68832903
Yeah, I can definitely see how two extra bass strings would help out with the low end tone. Though, is it really impossible to go that low with a 6 string? What if I put on some really beefy strings, SRV style, and tuned it way, way down? Or maybe even tune the low strings to be lower and the high strings to be higher than standard, to get both lows and highs at the same time.

That's about how often I clean my boards, twice a year. Also, I'd definitely recommend learning to do your own setups, anon. All you need in the way of specialized tools is a truss rod wrench, string height gauge, and a set of feeler gauges. It'll take some practice, but it'll save you so much money. Go watch a few of the videos at Dave's World of Fun Stuff, he's got some solid tutorials.

I worked at a music store as a guitar salesman and technician for nearly 4 years. I know how to do set ups, I simply don't have the space or the inclination to do it myself until I can set up a proper table, which will be in the new year. I have it done by a very relaxed and professional fellow who has been doing repair and builds for 30 years.

It's because I don't have the ability to put the proper upkeep-care into my Gibson that I entrust it to a professional yearly until next year. Trust me, I have a lot of work to do on these fuckers.
>>
>>68832782
The instrument that starts the song sounds like a bass with a cheap fuzz or intentionally lofi fuzz, or maybe its just super compressed.

There's no guide that could lead you to the "conclusion" I reached, thats just years of experience, hearing a bunch of things, and then learning how those were produced.

All i can tell you is that if i used the setup i described i could get a good approximation of that sound.

A bass in standard playing the 7th fret on the e string would produce the same note as a guitar tuned to B standard playing the 6th string(low E in standard), B, but both sound vastly different, even if played through the same amp with the same settings. That sounds like a bass to me.

Next, the dirt. Commonly you use overdrive, straight distortion, or fuzz to get the grit. They achieve it in different ways, and to different. The signal is too saturated for overdrive, unless it was in front of an already driven amp. Even then, it doesnt sound like overdrive. To me it sounds like fuzz, listen to comparisons on youtube and you'll hear some noticeable differences.

I say lofi or compression because the sound has no life, no room to breathe. Quality fuzzes dont do that, cheap ones ocassionaly do. Otherwise its compression, probably after the fuzz to keep all the levels in check. It very well might be compression added in post production. Could be something like a sansamp too, but i tend to think those have fizzy top end(which to some extent can also be corrected post production).

That's the thing I'm trying to learn right now, hence why I asked in the first place. And your post is exactly the sort of info I'm looking for, I just wish there was some way of getting more information like that, apart from probably asking a guitar tech/teacher.

Also, I've got another question while I'm at it. When using effect pedals like fuzz or distortion, are you supposed to go with the clean channel on the amp, or is it okay to add the amp's overdrive as well. Does it even produce any sort of effect at that point? Or is there some point where the signal becomes too distorted and additional effects add nothing to it?

God is represented with the number 7 as perfection

7 strings were created to be closer to God, who created us, strings and guitars.

Will atheists recover and their 6-6-6 strings tuned to low C standard?

String Theory doesn't do this. You also can't conduct experiments, which will not allow you to follow the scientific method. Hence it is not a theory.

Read Lee Smolin's book on it if you are still confused.

Pulled a tendon in my wrist. Now my third and pinky fingers hurt sometimes, and so does the wrist.

>>
>>68834631
Basically, a good way to learn is by searching a musicians name and then adding "live rig" "studio rig" "pedal board" "amp" or some other phrase to the search. This will sometimes help you locate specific information, especially on more well known guitar players. Looking at live videos will sometimes help, and you can even find videos where people break their rig down piece by piece, what, how and why they use what they do. You can find a pretty extensive one, for example, about a pedal board this guy built for the guy from radiohead.

Watch videos on different effects too, start with distortions because theyre easiest to understand, then move on to modulation because thats the easiest to differentiate sounds.

As for whether to run your amp dirty or clean with distortion, its up to you. Too many distortion effects make a horrible sound, lots of oscilation, noise, mud, and it can get to a point where it's just white noise. A lot of guys will use a mostly gritty sound on their amp and still run a fuzz or overdrive in front for leads, sometimes even a clean boost. Some guys prefer pedal distortion over amp distortion, some amp distortion just sucks, and some guys just plain prefer fuzz over anything. Some amps, especially vintage, only have one channel, if its clean youll have to use a pedal for distortion. The possibilities are endless, really, its whatever you think sounds best.

I pulled the tendon on my right hand though. I asked my teacher, he just told me to chill out with the playing and wait for it to heal up without doing any fancy pulling stuff.

Shit, last year my elbow always hurt from picking, now I'm fucking up my wrist and my elbow is fine. Advances in technique, fuck yeah.
