Disappointed? Considering that they were created entirely by three people working with nothing but a cellphone mounted on a selfie stick and absolutely no budget - not at all.

As for interesting-ness. Imo there's plenty to be fathomed in them if you look closely - especially if you have a serious interest in filmmaking/editing/post-processing (eg. see pic related for a side-by-side comparison of how the use of color in the video for Scream is highly reminiscent to that seen in Dario Argento's 1970s Giallo classic Suspiria.)

>I expect music videos from her to be more... well, interesting.
Nobody was saying that when REALiTi music was released. What has changed and why are saying this now?
>>
>>68764063
and she still looks ugly.
>>
(continuing from >>68765504 )
Which isn't to say that I am NOT in favor of her doing stuff on a bigger scale in the future (my money's on a large-scale set-piece for Venus Fly featuring Janelle Monae as her next major official release - fleeting glimpses of pre-production-related artwork for it on Instagram tell me so.) But imo there is still a lot to be absorbed from her minimalist pieces as well.
>>
>>68765504
>no budget
There was budget enough but her fans are already loyal to fault and don't deserve having money spent on them.
>>
>>68765809

The REALiTi video IS interesting. It doesn't focus on one shot for more than a few seconds and everything happens very quickly. Grimes is seen jumping around and dancing like a maniac.

I'll admit I didn't watch all of them, but Butterfly, World Princesses Part II, and Belly of the Beat are just 4-5 minutes of... nothing happening.

>>68765962
there is no such thing as an ugly picture of Grimes.
>>
>>68765997
Imo it's probably safe to say that any artistic endeavors Grimes decides to embark upon from this point onward featuring a minimalistic approach are that way because of an artistic choice on her part - not a lack of raw resources. Considering the extensive roster of established industry talent from across the professional worlds of music, fashion, visual art, and even motion pictures who have revealed themselves over recent years as SERIOUS fans, it should be very obvious that the only reason she hasn't been churning out completely over-the-top art pieces to the level of peak popularity era Lady Gaga is that that sort of thing doesn't fit with what she ultimately wants to do.

>>
>>68766441
To each his/her own - the one for Butterfly is actually my personal favorite.

>>68766459
Late one night some time around July 31st Grimes posted a crappy screenshot (featuring a near BW shot of a darkness-shrouded shirtless man with grotesque-looking Angel Wings sprouting from his back) to the Trashique Instagram account with a caption saying that it was official cover art for a film treatment of Venus Fly that Mac had just sent her and that she highly approved of his decision to give the treatment itself cover art, given the overall scope of the project (or words roughly to that effect.)

Unfortunately the whole thing was only up for about 25 minutes before being taken down (most likely because of a completely unrelated flame-war which broke out in its comments section between a disgruntled former Grimes fan and an apparent active member of Anonymous - my wasn't THAT interesting) and I didn't have the presence of mind to get a screenshot or anything before it was all gone.

So I'm afraid you'll have to take these words of mine entirely at face value as to whether any of this is actually happened. And don't forget that there have been many Grimes-related project ideas hinted at over the years that have failed to see the light of day - could very well be that this was just another one of those.

Since she's no longer gonna be specifically promoting Art Angels when she performs, imo it's gonna be very interesting to see which new songs/old songs/reworkings of old songs end up on her setlists once she inevitably starts performing again.

The weirdest was acting in this Can-Con [Canadian sci-fi convention] movie. I’m not going to tell you the name, because I don’t want you to find it.

Sounds intriguing. I wonder how bad it really is.

Although seeing as there was no Cancon between 2001 and 2010 (and she was super busy in 2011), that probably means that movie was from the 2010 convention. Which would mean it would be an ultra-rare Grimes.

Depends on how "deep" of a music listener you are.

Grimes' early music comes across as being more "experimental" chiefly because it lacks many of the sonic elements that people currently identify as conventional, thereby pushing the experimental aspects of it to the forefront. For example, even the most casual of music listeners is gonna have no trouble recognizing the general strangeness of a song like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvkNNRHo5nI

In contrast, Grimes' recent music comes across as being more "conventional" because it ACTUALLY DOES contain lots of thoroughly conventional elements this time around. However that doesn't mean that the experimentality inherent of her early music isn't still there. Just that it's presence is gonna be harder for the casual listener to detect since conventionality (aka what you automatically recognize) always trumps experimentality (aka what you don't automatically recognize.)
>>
>>68800700
>>68800722
Solid posts. Unfortunately many don't have time and patience to get all the subtleties of her music.
>>
(continued from >>68800700 )

One of my favorite examples of this is how extensively Grimes uses her own voice as both a delivery mechanism for lyrics (conventional) and as a fundamental component of the backing instrumentals (highly experimental - at least in the realms of modern pop music) throughout the entirety of Art Angels. To cite some specific examples - many of the percussion elements that you hear throughout the chorus sections of the song Butterfly are actually just tuned samples of her violently screaming (eg. listen from 3:24 onwards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUrYEXREdnI ) Also, if you give a careful listen to the chorus sections of the song Flesh Without Blood (eg. starting from 1:00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNuQmBRB69g ) you will notice that what sounds like a synth pad playing in the background is actually the reverb/delay trails of her vocals from the beginning of the refrain fed into a 1:1 feedback loop and then pitch-shifted to compliment the song's chord progression

VERY interesting, experimental stuff. Granted, it takes a good ear and some very focused listening (plus a nice set of cans) to fully appreciate. Subtlety is an art in and of itself - one that is often lost on those who it themselves' lack. Imo Grimes' msuci today is every bit as atmospheric and experimental as it was in the past - it's just that there is a much broader sonic palate of things going that can make that harder to appreciate.

>>
>>68801873
Not that anon, but I don't get why her music MUST be experimental at any price. I prefer my music to be primarily melodic and she achieved that in a brilliant way. Even if it's more pop than before, her music still sounds like her style and no one else. It's much harder to write proper good songs than to do experimental music for the sake of it. Her focus now it's on improving her songwriting and production.

If you dislike her new music, bad luck to you. She's not going to rehash her old style too soon.

Grimes just moved from that naive phase. Her music is still emotional but in a different way: instead of that sad/melancholic vibe she pursued a more upbeat vibe. She's happier now and she expressed that in her music. Wouldn't be a bit weird to make another sad album while she's enjoying a good life? Apparently that scrapped album was more like Visions. Reposting in this thread - for your convenience:

The entire population of sample values (in this case MetaCritic review scores pertaining to each album) are covered by the paired values listed. There is NO margin of error in this case.
>>
>>68804282
Originally calculator of these values speaking. Based on these metacritic scores, the only album listed that doesn't appear to have been overrated to some degree by professional critics (when compared to its user reviews score) is Art Angels, whose identical score values indicates that it is neither overrated nor underrated.

Imo the much more interesting finding to be had here is the fact that - out of the top 13 listed for 2015 - no albums were underrated by critics compared to how users scored them, and all were overrated to some extent (with the previously described exception of Art Angels.)

In other words, according to metacritic there seems to be actually quantifiable evidence that major professional music critics in 2015 were actively inflating their review scores across the board.
>>
>>68804807
i never said margin of error you retarded fuck i said percent error. please open a high school science textbook and look it up in the fucking glossary.
>>68805240
as i stated previously you're unironically taking aggregated scores as gospel when it comes to the "true" numerical score of an album. in addition, the user rating of the album is literally a poll taken by people who care enough to go to metacritic and rate it. if you'd look through the user reviews, you'd see that an overwhelming number of people rated the album as a 10, and the score was brought down to an 8.8 by people who rated it (presumably) as a 1. this is because only people who are either delusionally obsessed with grimes or fanatically disgusted with grimes are autistic enough to care about rating an album on the fucking internet
>>
>>68805437
>i never said margin of error [unnecessary expletive phrase omitted] i said percent error.
Metascore tabulates professional review scores on a scale of 0 - 100 with zero decimal places of precision and user review scores on a scale of 0.0 - 10.0 with one decimal place of precision - ie. both statistics can be converted to a more friendly 0 - 100 percent scale without any loss of precision or introduction of error.

>as i stated previously you're unironically taking aggregated scores as gospel
Anon, the only person taking these numbers super-seriously seems to be you. At the end of the day these are all just metacritic scores - ie. should be taken with an extremely large grain of salt. Anyone who isn't able to figure that out from the get-go on their own probably shouldn't be using the internet.
>>
>>68805685
I never said Metacritic made an error, I'm saying you made an error in your calculations by assuming the user score to be the objective score. Had you done it the other way around, all of the other albums would have been underrated.

I AM saying that the user scores are unscientific from the get-go due to the fact that people that voice their opinions on an album (or really anything) online tend to either be in complete love with the album or despise it. There simply isn't enough people going into the album with a neutral opinion on it to get an accurate user score.

>the only person taking these numbers super-seriously seems to be you
Well I should hope I take numbers seriously, my profession revolves around calculations. I'm pointing out that your logic is flawed because of the way you calculated the nature of the ratings and your blind faith in the user scores.

Finally, you're taking the Metacritic scores just as seriously as me if you're trying to prove that Art Angels is "objectively" the best album because Carrie & Lowell's user rating was two points below the aggregated critical score and is therefore overrated.

>I'm saying you made an error in your calculations by assuming the user score to be the objective score.
My calculations are based on the assumption that BOTH scores are objective representations of subjective quantities, since that is what they are.

>There simply isn't enough people going into the album with a neutral opinion on it to get an accurate user score.
Anyone who truly believes that professional music reviewers go into things with truly neutral opinions clearly doesn't understand how people's minds work. All opinion polling is pseudo-scientific by definition - no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

>Well I should hope I take numbers seriously, my profession revolves around calculations.
So does mine - although in my case I deal primarily with having to quantify subjective data through quantitative means. It sucks because you can never say anything with absolute certainty. However it's the best you can get when you're dealing with living people, so...

>you're trying to prove that Art Angels is "objectively" the best album
Never said that, and there is NO data here to support that assertion either. What I said is that - going by the numbers seen here - it would appear to be the most accurately rated (at 88% - no more, no less) out of the bunch since its separate scores are equal to each other.

What the hell does that mean? It's purely subjective.

I never said reviewers go into reviews with neutral opinions on things, however that doesn't make it fair game to compare it to other biased opinions. This only results in data that's even more skewed than it was originally.

My profession uses hard, measured data so that's why I care about the accuracy of measurement.

>it would appear to be rated the most accurately
>it would appear
Ding ding ding, because there can't be accuracy with the abundance of 10 ratings, the outliers of the 1 ratings, and the near absence of scores that fall in between the absolute highest and lowest scores.

Personally I think it's awesome. It's like the Bride of Frankenstein - except from one of those alternate dimensions where everything is a slightly different shape and color.

>that doesn't make it fair game to compare it to other biased opinions.
Yes it does, because bias is bias.

>My profession uses hard, measured data so that's why I care about the accuracy of measurement.
My profession (which lies in the field of psychology research btw) uses hard, measured data pertaining to people's subjective responses - because that's the best that can be done when you're dealing with the human mind. It sucks, but that's life.

>because there can't be accuracy with the abundance of 10 ratings
There can never be complete accuracy in a situation like this because - once again - the data we are dealing with is inherently subjective. The only thing we can do is take the data points we have and see what they suggest, bearing in mind that there is no conclusive way to prove anything.

In essence, this is all little more than idle speculation and CAN never be anything more than that. Hence the 'not taking overly seriously' factor.

Big plans from Grimey:

>Still, Boucher’s not entirely prepared to abandon the glamour of big budget videos just yet; she has also just finished collaborating with Janelle Monáe on her video for “Venus Fly,” their shared track on Art Angels, which will serve as the 11th and final video off the album.

>As she closes the door on this album, Boucher has a calmer project in mind for the next: “I’m really vibing on making something really slow and gorgeous that just breathes, and has room to breathe. I feel like my work has always been fast paced, kinetic, and almost just manic and I feel like for me the hardest thing I can do is make something that’s slow and heavy. I’m so ADD in my work; I really want to push myself into something that would be slower and more reflective.”
>>
>>68813784
> “Honestly, I don't feel very confident in myself as a singer. As I get older, I’m probably going to try to be more involved in the behind-the-scenes work, and less involved in being the front person"

throwing the towel on the popstar dream already?
>>
>>68815145
shes been saying this for the past 4 years. I don't think she's ever gonna quit. She flip flops between "I hate singing" and "GRIMES IS MY PROJECT!! MINE!!! IT'S TOO HIGH PROFILE FOR ANYBODY ELSE TO SING FOR ME!!!"
>>
>>68811763
>Not grasping the value of minimizing the possibility of making performance errors (via doing things like taping down unused controls) so that you are totally free to be wild and bombastic in performance
'Tis actually very smart on her part desu. Her entire live act, in fact, is based on setting up a highly structured environment (the two dancers, backup singer/instrumentalist, her central platform command center with everything carefully pre-arranged) in which she is then free to completely and safely brake loose.
>>
do you think chairmandore had a deviantart?
>>
>>68815666
nice trips dood
I think she said in an interview she used deviantart before like when she was way younger, and i tried searching for it with the only nicknames I know she used, with no success
it'd probably be filled with cringey stuff so it'd be pretty funny to find it
she probably deleted it
