ITT: tragic backstory-core
3/4 members of The Exploding Hearts died in a bus crash, only two months after the release of their debut album.
More for what happened after it released than before it though
>>68760132
To anyone interested, the guy on the far right was the only survivor.
>>68760342
It was pretty sad during the recording too. Nicky and Richey worked on the lyrics beforehand and Richey mostly slept and cried while the other members recorded. His eventual suicide was the culmination of everything he went through before the album was released.
>>68760019
>>68760183
>>68760195
>>68760405
what's the backstory?
Obligatory
>>68760458
Jackson C Frank: shit upbringing, was injured in a school fire and used the compensation money to record the album in england. too shy to record anything else he died penniless and alone
Baby Huey: massively overweight heroin addict, died at age 26
Fishmans: last live show before their frontman passed away from a lifelong heart condition
Neil Young: devastated by the passing of a Crazy Horse bandmate and one of his roadies, both due to drug overdoses
>>68760019
>>68760129
So fucking based
>>68760541
Not to mention Neil gave Bruce Berry (the roadie) the money he use to buy the heroin he overdosed on.
>>68760541
thanks for posting these

>>Fishmans: last live show before their frontman passed away from a lifelong heart condition
wasn't it a car accident?
>>68760458
Baby Huey's death was also really sad.
After doing tracks for that album with Curtis Mayfield, he was doing OK and had kicked dope for a while and was pretty much on the track to becoming a star, he went on tour with the Babysitters and had finished playing a show in Wisconsin and was back in Chicago for a little while, he decided to shoot up "one last time" and went to a motel in the south side with a couple of kids, he shoots up, collapses and the kids panic and run out of the motel and leave him there to die. Heart attack at age 26 because his body couldn't handle the heroin his system had previously cleaned out.
>>68760682
That was Honzi, a longtime collaborator.
Nothing tragic about this album in particular, but Bryan Harvey, who was half of this duo was murdered along with his wife and two infant daughters in 2006 by two spree killers who had broken into their house, tied them up in the basement, cut them up, beat them with heavy objects and then set the house on fire.

obligatory
>>68760541
>massively overweight heroin addict
how is that possible?
i know what you're thinking. don't reply
>>68760451
And Peanut Butter Wolf still looks fucked up about it. I saw the Stones Throw documentary and he came off so lost.
>>68760541
You're underselling Jackson C. Frank.
He had schizophrenia aswell, was rediscovered in the early 90's by some guy who was trying to get him back on his feet. While sitting in a park he was shot by some kids with a pellet gun, blinding him in his left eye. Tried to record some more shit, didnt work out and then he died.
You also forgot to mention all or a lot his classmates were killed in the school fire. So survivors guilt here we go.
Also this is a beautiful description of Fishman's last show:
"Fishmans performed its final concert on December 28, 1998. They played many of their best songs and concluded with a full performance of Long Season. Sato left the stage immediately after a single "goodbye" with his eyes teary...Sato and Motegi planned to continue working as Fishmans. However, Sato died the following year on March 15 due to heart problems that he had suffered since birth."
Then there's also Townes van Zandt. Was a proper high school kid, did all the things expected from the heir of a fairly rich family who was expected to in the family business. Decided he wanted to do other things, parents though he was crazy. Had some shock therapy that fucked up his short term memory and probably other shit aswell. Then turned into a lifelong alcoholic who at the end of his life played a couple of shows where he could barely stand up.
>>68760791
I'm a huge fan of this style of bait but we're having discussions here, now is not the time for it.
>>68760693
I'm pretty sure msot drug overdose deaths come from people who got clean, then decide to do it "one last time" using the same amount they usually did but now their body can't handle it.
>>68760825
Well yeah dude his best friend was murdered, I wouldn't be able to come back from that shit either
>>68760845
Happens all the time
>co-writes and plays on one of the greatest power pop records ever
>despite excellent reception the album tanks commercially
>leaves the band and records an album's worth of songs on his own
>nobody is interested in releasing it
>he falls into clinical depression and gets stuck working at a restaurant
>dies in a car crash and his album doesn't come out for another 14 years

>DUDE I ALSO SUFFER FROM PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA AND DEPRESSION, HAVE PERMANENT SCARS FROM THE EXPLOSION THAT KILLED SEVERAL OF MY FRIENDS, HAVE CRIPPLING SOCIAL ANXIETY, MY SON DIED OF CYSTIC FIBROSIS AS A CHILD, ENDED UP LIVING ON THE STREETS WHEN I WAS DOWN TO MY LAST DOLLAR TRYING TO GET SUCCESSFUL, ENDED UP WITH A THYROID MALFUNCTION THAT MADE ME OBESE, ENDED UP LOSING AN EYE WHEN SOME KID SHOT ME IN IT AND ULTIMATELY DIED OF PNEUOMINA LMAO
God, what a pussy
>>68760826
My favorite JCF song comes from the 90s recordings

>>68760885
I honestly didn't even know these recordings existed. Must check them out sometime.
These guys just had the absolute worst luck, and two of them paid for that misfortune with their lives.
Also Krist Novoselic, who seems like a completely different person after Cobain died
>>68760897
It's from the anthology of his recordings. Lots of real good ones - but I think "Tumble in the Wind" is the highlight.

>Townes van Zandt
I think he legitimately did have some mental problems, but the shock therapy was unnecessary and fucked him up. Kind of similar to Lou Reed in that respect.
Steve Shelley was a big fan of his and met with him and tried to arrange for some recordings. Townes was drunk and in pain from a broken hip he refused to get treated, and wasn't able to record all what was planned. Then he died.
>>68760962
How was his death tragic? He fucked lots of hoes, got good money and was successful in his career.
>>68761010
becoming bedridden and dying at 32 from a blood disease is a pretty terrible way to go
>>68761010
Well it's a tragic backstory to that particular album. He made the whole thing literally on his death bed. Like, he had the equipment & things in his hospital room and stuff. He died just a few days after it was released.
>>68760879
Why didn't he just try to be himself?
>>68760132
This. Power pop in general had a lot of sadness in it (see Badfinger, Big Star), but these guys take the cake.
>>68761001
Townes van Zandt might very well have had some mental issues, but the shock therapy indeed really fucked him up badly. At some of his latest performances he's almost talking his songs...

>27 TB
>27 TERABYTES
>TWENTY-SEVEN FUCKING TERABYTES OF HARDCORE PORNOGRAPHY INVOLVING CHILDREN
Am I reading that right? How the fuck do you even collect 27 terabytes of any kind of data, let alone CP? I don't even know if I could ever collect 27 terabytes of normal movies and TV shows in a lifetime. What the fuck?
I miss Elliott a ton.
>>68761108
wow
this case somehow gets more and more ridiculous as i learn about it
>>68760877
Big Star were the greatest rock band of the 70s and both Alex and Chris were master songwriters
you should watch the doc Nothing Can Hurt Me, gives a lot of insight into the aftermath of Chris' death
>>68760885
I love that song, but October is his best song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OVA9CrO8Hc
Songs: Ohia
obvious one
>>68761192
The only musician where i genuinly felt sad when he died. I mean, i saw it coming but i still hoped he somehow was going to beat it.
>>68761156
I actually have that queued up to watch for tomorrow night. Pretty excited.
>>68761001
Blind Willie Johnson.
Blinded by his stepmother who threw lye in his eyes and died of pneumonia wrapped in a wet newspaper in his burned down house. West Wing worded it pretty well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2HzHSeV9v8
>>68760784
The burns from the fire left him with thyroid disfunction
>>68761785
And looking back nobody mentioned his girlfriend at the time died in the fire, which he made this song about.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FB8N3zOpMi4
It's one of his best imo along with The Visit.
>>68760447
Was it actually suicide? I thought his body hadn't been found yet
>>68761785
>>68761874
v. tragic but >>68760784 was talking about Baby Huey
>>68761914
>tfw i just found this picture of the guy
He really was fucking fat.
>>68761941
Oh fuck me I didn't think jackson frank did heroin anyways
>>68761900
He was depressed, self-harmed, and his car was found near a bridge known for suicide jumpers. If it's the most likely explanation, then it's probably right. If he did jump, his body would end up in the river and drifted out to sea where it would never be found.
>>68761976
Ah shit
Not really that tragic but
>High on pcp and drunk on everclear, his mom shot him in the eye
>Was pronounced dead but was revived
>Lost eye
>Also 3 feet 8 inches tall
>>68762199
I had no idea it was his mom that shot him. God damn.
>>68762199
jesus, when will manlets learn?
>>68762199
i bet bushwick bill doesn't reply to those "reply or your mother will die in her sleep tonight" posts
>>68762225
Thats what it says on wikipedia, but I've read somewhere else that he shot himself in the eye, so I'm not sure.
>>68762323
Well, regardless, that sounds like a pretty based mom
>>68762199
His girlfriend shot him in the eye fighting for a gun because he wanted her to kill him he has a whole song about this
shortly after recording this album the guitarist got a severe brain disease that left him unable to play guitar "for the rest of his life" but through significant physical therapy he's been able to play again, but not at the level he was on this record.
>Jackson was born in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, Jamaica in 1946. One of seven children, Jackson left home at the age of twelve to find work at a furnace in Waterhouse. At seventeen, the effects of malnutrition had left him hospitalized, and on his release he was left with severe arthritis which had partially crippled his legs. His physical condition meant that he was unable to return to his previous work, and he was forced into hustling a living on the streets of Kingston.
The title of this album is eerily fitting.
>>68762385
Yeah my bad, I read it off wikipedia because I forgot. Weird how theres a bunch of conflicting accounts on how it happened.
>>68762450
how? im unfamiliar
>>68762899
For Squirrels was a band that was well on their way to success in the mid-90s, and that album was going to be their major record label debut. While they were driving home from their first major show to promote the release of the upcoming album, their van got blindsided and the singer and bassist died in the resulting crash. The lyrics to this song are almost prophetic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBbl3RpgNN4
>>68762942
story?
>>68763121
Everyone in the band hated each other, and Chino was having problems with drugs and his marriage at the time. Tensions got to the point where everyone had to email their recorded parts to each other and combine them later. The album didn't do very well commercially or critically.
Two years later bassist Chi Cheng got into a bad car accident which out him in a coma, and he succumbed in 2013.

He starts describing the whole thing at about halfway through
>>68762942
I thought Diamond Eyes was much sadder. This song is pretty clearly about Chi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRmevF0zmcA
>>68763797
Lyrically yeah but musically not at all. The only sad sounding song on Diamond Eyes is 976-EVIL, meanwhile SNW has Hole in the Earth, Konami Code, Kimdracula and Rats!Rats!Rats! which are all very bleak and hopeless sounding songs
>>68760129
How was Frusciante's life tragic? He was still a teen and already a monster guitarist and joined a major label band who made him filthy rich almost immediately. But then he got pissy and quit to be a heroin addict instead.
The only tragedy is that he re-joined the band and made shitty soccer mom music that was inescapable for over a decade.
>>68764560
Be careful not to cut yourself on all that edge!
>>68764983
What edge would that be?
>>68764999
Muh soccer mom music!
Keep on listening to your post-avant psychedelic dreampunk performances from the late 80's jazz wave in that little African village called Wuloohi. No time to listen to dirty mainstream music!
>>68764999
The knife edge that left scar tissue
>>68765164
If calling rhcp soccer mom music is what passes for edgy these days on here then we're in trouble.
>>68765164
>>68765164
You don't have to be into really weird obscure shit to know that RHCP sucked, especially in the 2000s. GTFO normie newfag! REEEEEEEEEE
>>68765164
Hello new friend :^)
>>68765164
>Frusciante's first day on /mu/
Will he ever recover?
>>68760019
Anyone notice how Brian Wilson and Syd have a surprisingly similar backstory despite coming from two completely different backgrounds.
>>68760826
>Was a proper high school kid
Woah, there. Townes was a good student and obviously gifted from a young age but he was always something of a rebel. There was a picture of him in his senior yearbook glue sniffing for crying out loud.
>>68765467
Barrett was completely off his rocker. Wilson was still somewhat down to earth.
Obligatory
Aphex Twin
>>68760458
>>68760541
correction: Fishmans made shit music that got eaten up by teenage weeaboos, bringing shame upon their families
>>68762416
Man, is Jon Chung cursed or something because I'm sure something like that happened to someone from Discordance Axis too.
>>68765164
lol RHCP is shit
Smile from the Streets You Hold is better than anything RHCP released and if that doesn't tell you something I don't know what will
>>68766724
Yoko?
>>68760019
Holy shit, Jackson C Frank had a shitty life.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_C._Frank
did anyone mention judee sill yet.
>>68767125
actually both those grunge unplugged albums, staley in a junkie death spiral and cobain in the final months of suicidal depression
>>68760877
Glad to see someone mentioning Chris. I only rarely, if ever see him on here.
Richard Manuel always gets me.
