I didn't know since I took the easy route and wrote it in C major.

been looking for a /prod/ all day, and a lack of one means I've actually been working on a track for an extended period of time for a change.

I feel like this is pretty much done, I know I could do with a change in chord progression or something but I just want to move onto something else. Any last minute tips before I post it to soundcloud tomorrow? I feel like the "bass" pad and kick aren't quite right, but can't get them any better than this

>>
>>68738450
I have a first gen 6i6, and I for-the-most part am happy with it.
It occasionally stops responding though that is likely due to me being a retard and not knowing how to hook things up.

Thats a rather steep price bud, unless deflation is becoming a real problem over there in Brexitland, I think you paid a little much.
>>
>>68738502
dunno, im from germany. the usual price for the set is around 200. at this point it was cheaper for me than buying the scarlett and headphones and a mic and a cable seperately.
i think the second gen is quite a bit better, though i dont remember the changes right now.

>>
>>68738243
>https://clyp.it/lvxm2sxt
agreed with the other anon, if you're gonna have the melody and bass playing in such a straight rhythm then you need to do something different with the percussion
>>
>>68739538
not that anon but every note for every instrument seems to be one two three four one two three four, there's no rhythmic variation
>>
>>68739524
ah yeah it's all just 1 take, first pass. Just getting the instruments together for the jam so to speak
>>68739484
You have to change the guitar arpeggios up a little bit at like 1:08 IMO. A subtle 'switch' should be felt. If that's tonic then go to IV is whatmsayin.

>>68739538
Think of a march. The style. It has a subtle swagger even though it's just '1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2', and that's the tempo for "normie-core" type stuff like you're aiming.

>>
>>68740451
If that one is yours aswell, I would compress the peaks a tad, as they stick out and hurt the ears a tad.

On your original, maybe lessen the bass and lows to allow some of the mids to come out more and not be royally fucked and dominated by the bass.
>>
https://youtu.be/eAk3gqT0vkg
This should be in the OP pasta.

Also, finally payday today, /prod/. Wanted to wait until at least today to buy my first paid synth. I'm torn again between the analog microbrute and the soft synth Serum (I discarded Zebra 2 because the interface seemed a bit impractical and it had no good presets).

If my main goal is to make music and to pick a synth that I learn thoroughly and is my go-to synth, which should I pick? It's easy to think that Serum is the most versatile... is minibrute mostly just for people looking specifically to try analog synthesis without breaking the bank?
>>
So I put together my first sample pack and have no idea where to share it, anybody know any good subreddits or anything where I can show it to people.

It isn't free.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience selling their own sample packs.
>>
Been working on this for > 200h according to my DAW. Didn't feel like it. It's almost finished! Everything is pretty well mixed I think, I just have to fix that stupid solo at the beginning, add small details, master and I'll be done I guess

https://clyp.it/fa5e0icx

What is this kind of music even called? I usually compose one part, and let myself get carried away by the flow of things, adding parts after it, before it, which usually results in a patchwork of genres like this
All critiques welcome, please be harsh

btw, I was talking about adding detail, but it might not be clear.
Take this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHs99iVpnXU and notice the huge diversity of chimes from the beginning to approx 0:35 (not to talk about what comes after).
I'd like to do that but 1) I'm almost sure chimes wouldn't fit and 2) I have no fucking clue what would fit for such harmonic enrichment in my track. Any idea welcome!

>>
>>68740921
Holy shit that's fucking awesome, I love the sidechaining.

It sounds like some form of house, but then again that mostly comes down to the tempo.
If 120 to at most 140, its some subgenre of house, maybe prog, maybe electro
>>
>>68740966
Not terrible, definitely better than the shit I was making when I first got my DAW. Who was I to know I couldn't make a song out of mostly pitch-changing snares?

That being said, spend more time in your program. If you have a focus of what you want to get the best at, say a group or a certain producer, start trying to mimic their work, maybe throw in some things from other genres.
Eventually, hopefully atleast, you will find your style.
>>
>>68740974
Thank you! I've had quite a hard time to set the sidechain just right haha
Until now I've always said what I was doing was progressive house because that's how I would literally describe it in an accurate way, but what we call progressive house nowadays is totally not that sooo...
Thank you again!
>>
>>68741053
I want to hear your song of pitch-changing snares, I thought only Savant was degenerate enough to do such things

>>
>>68740966
I don't know if you're using presets or not for your synths, but if you're new to production, here's what you should know: as good as a preset might sound, you will never be able to make it sound better if you don't understand the process by which your synth outputs sound, and if you use too much presets you will get too lazy to get into this understanding mindset. When you think a song is finished, get into mixing and mastering. This really is what makes the difference between zero and hero.
Besides that, good track! If you get familiar with your DAW and more production techniques you can turn this into fire
>>
>>68741290
Literally what is wrong with only using presets?
>>
>>68741310
nothing as long as you know how to change them to better suit your music.
>>
>>68741310
I'm not saying using presets is wrong, but you can't deny the fact that any producer needs to know how his tools work. I think overusing presets when you're new prevents you from actually have the will to understand how your synth works.
I also personally think presets limits creativity.

>>
>>68741221
The most frequent thing is the bass being sidechained to the kick, for two reasons:
- both of these instruments use the low frequency range, and having overlapping frequency range in the lows make it too 'crowded' and your mix will sound moody. You want to avoid that, unless it's part of your sound design.
- having that bass sound going up and down in rhythm with the kick is somehow satisfying to hear, and people eventually started to sidechain any instrument they wanted (even high pitched instruments, with which you don't have that bothering frequency overlapping stuff), just for fun

If you're using FLS and you can understand American English with a heavy peasant accent, you definitely want to check this guy's channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/SeamlessR/playlists
If you're using something else then I can't really help...
But keep in mind that you should remember techniques. Any technique you've learnt can be easily translated in any DAW you're familiar with. The same goes for synths, they all use the same basic elements. As long as you know how it work, you will be ok. The rest is only practice!

I'm getting really tired of having no midi connectivity with my old Juno 60. Iwish I could just sell it but I don't quite have a replacement for the sound. Is it really worth getting the DIN to midi sync? Seems like a huge pain in the wallet to use with only one piece of gear.

On that note, what is everybody thinking about the DM12? Possible Juno upgrade?
>>
How do I get better at not giving up?
I can work and work on a track but even by the time it's almost finished I realize it wasn't really what I wanted to make so I just stop. I open FL and end up closing a few minutes later usually because I listen to a few samples and just realize I won't be able to do what I want to do.

anyway, with regards to you not being able to finish anything. Couldn't have said it better myself. Also, OP, I think it sounds like a more experimental high school band. No offense but not something I would want to listen unironically.

>>68744991
I know there's an element of "silly" in there, trying to figure out what that is. I was thinking maybe I don't lock the groove well enough. Maybe that's it, but anyway if it helps I was trying to go for a coltrane sound in some of the licks.
>>68744984
I'm a noob to jazz myself, but let me tell you a story. I went up to a jazz musician who was practicing standards like Autumn Leaves and So What, stuff like that. He pretty much gave me the run down. See, normally in music the root notes of the chords are played as well as the bassline playing the note. But jazz is all about efficiency, especially in the piano. since the bass playing is already playing the root, theres no need for the piano to play it. so the root is ommitted, and instead extensions like add9s and 6s as well as flat 5s are added to the chord, and inverted in such a way so that to make chord changes easier without hopping around the keybed. i was using inverted 7th chords and flat 5 7ths at time, most of it from there on was just intuition. I sometimes play 6/9 chords or add 6 chords with 2 hands by playing for example say you're on C: csus2 on the left hand and D sus 2 on the right hand. together youd get a 6/9 chord which is an easy way to mimic that jazz sound if youre just going for atmospheric stuff. minor add 9ths and stuff like that too...just learn chords and mess around, then learn jazz standards to get into all that good old 2-5-1 shit. do that then just try to immerse yourself. listen to a lot of funk, acid jazz, standards, anything with a groove. groove is a universal language, but you gotta get groove to be able to groove. for these jazzy yet funk stuff i was influenced by bands like Jamiroquai, Groove Collective, Corduroy, and guys like Weather Report but more of the above bands.
>>68744999
bebop had a really good band for sure. drums are something i still need to work on, keeping a tight groove requires a lot of feel.

>>
>>68745152
>I was trying to go for a coltrane sound in some of the licks.
Yeah, I could definitely hear that. I wouldn't say it's entirely silly because I do hear a conscious effort to have a more avant-garde band sound.
>>
>>68745152
Thanks for the jazz knowledge and band reccs. I actually have a huge ass fake book with a couple of my favorite standards in it. Will listen and practice.
>>
>>68745294
Yeah, by "I have no hardware" I meant more like synthesizers etc. and not MIDI, which I have.

>>68745181
Yeah, I thought so. I can tell some elements like drums which are definitely recorded in studio rather than merely using a DAW but most of it sounds like it could be concocted with a DAW. I'm asking because I feel like Neon Indian, specifically with their last record, have made chillwave/vaporwave that is much more engaging and thematic while a lot of what I hear now from those genres are more short compositions that are only what I could describe as fitting the meme mold, which I honestly don't find listenable.

it can be done in a daw but it would take longer to program realistic sounding beats

there are good software for acoustic drums i like groove agent 4 by steinberg but there are other options like native instruments battery or addictive drums by xln

As for mixing. it needs some work. It all sounds very claustrophobic. The audio engineer in me says add some ambience to atleast the drums and vocals, but I don't know what you're going for.

I have Live 9
My friend gave me his old Launchpad MK1. I've installed the driver and automap, but when I go to select the inputs, it looks like pic related.

As you can see, under "Input" the Launchpad isn't listed. This shit is fucking irritating. Installing drivers and other garbage just to get a usb controller to work is horse shit.

Thanks for all the feedback, everybody. I listened to the mix in my car and yeah the whistle is too forward. It's actually a chinese (if i remember correctly) flute but when combined with the timbre of the glockenspiel it sounds like whistling. If I added modulation to it it would sound like more realistic whistling. Will look into playing with the rhythm of the perc so it moves better around the melody and feels more like a march.

>>68749262
I work 20hrs/week for minimum wage at the up and coming (about to finish remodeling it) recording studio of my university making background music for, as well as recording and mixing for radio commercials, online courses and other multimedia things. To be honest, I know I'm not as good as many of the anons here but I absolutely love the job. The biggest benefit I'm getting from it, besides the pay I guess, is the experience and being able to put something on my audio-work resume (which isn't what I'm majoring in).

But hell yeah I would sell it if someone offered me reasonable cash; nothing better than getting paid to make music.
