first post and i'd like some feedback on my mix but it's on soundcloud!! oh no!! give me permission to post it /prod/.

I'm trying to find pro tools 11 for my own pc so I don't have to use the school's but it doesn't seem like an easy program to get for free.
Reaper is the best alternative daw right, /prod/?

reaper is decent and you can remap the key shortcuts to how they work in protools

When I use FL Studios, within the FPC machine, when I use certain presets, my electronic drum kits high tom is recognized as a mid hi-hat, when it is not a hi-hat, but some other kits do not have this problem, yet others do. How do I change the sound configuration or something like that to get it to work properly?

Having read your post and the ‘contempt’ you seem to have for Mr Zimmer is nothing short of hate and elitism. ‘Hans Florian Zimmer’ is currently one of the greatest living film composers working today, and will be remembered in 200yrs time as the ‘MOZART’ of our time! He will always maintain a Top 5 Greatest Film Composer status in human history. The closest in comparison (in terms of quality) is Ennio Morricone.

I love all kinds of music, and industrial/droning weird shit ala Silent Hill is one of my favorite types but it frustrates me that's the only thing I'm good at making.

I seem to have no talent when it comes to producing any other kind of music.

Yeah they've got that locked down, you're not getting a cracked version of Pro Tools unless it's an older version of PT on an older operating system.

And yeah Reaper is a good alternative for Pro Tools. In fact, the college I went to used Reaper for the beginner recording classes, so that they could download it and use it on their own computers. The more advanced classes used Pro Tools.
