Regardless of what you think about Grimes, on her threads you can find:
- good discussion (occasionally really good)
- pics
- memes and pastas
- obvious shitposts and trolling
- hate speech
- youtube links.

They all tend to have a shitload of replies and flamed arguments. They're diverse and entertaining. People that love her or love to hate her, they all enjoy posting non-stop about one of the best artists of the decade.

Imo unless Grimes and her existing music/art suddenly become a lot less interesting or a better hub for online Grimes-related conversation pops up, pretty sure /grimes/ is here to stay.

A) Her music is excellent, so it really doesn't matter at the end of the day how much of her upward trending commercial success is based on expertly gaming the system.
B) This is absolutely, positively true of what she's been doing. It's a fundamental aspect of her whole surrealist yuppie manifesto (not arbitrarily rejecting traditional/mainstream pathways to success when you have an honestly made, worthwhile product to sell.)

>>68713067
Imo what makes the difference is that she has been completely honest and open about what she's really been after from the get-go:
>"My femininity is in no way the basis of what I am doing, but I know sex sells, for sure,” she says. “And I definitely have played that card. Sometimes, you’ve got to look in front of you and recognise that there is a way to make things slightly easier, which will lead to a lot faster success.
>“And that doesn’t mean being like, ‘oh, my tits are out’, but it does mean that if someone says do a fashion shoot, you do it, why not? I recognise that that’s not the purest way to look at it, but I just think I am really good, and I want power, and that’s a faster way up the ladder.”
http://www.loudandquiet.com/2012/03/grimes-interview/

Lots of people (read: practically all) in the entertainment industry owe the bulk of their success to having been a pawn to the system. Very few manage to elevate themselves to a higher place of power in that game (imo this is one instance where referring to Grimes as a queen isn't just hyperbole) much less have the personal fortitude to be able to openly talk about the game existing without succumbing to fear of reprisal.

Imo it's extremely cool to watch her slowly succeed.
>>
>>68713653
>gaming the system
No better than those quirky "direct to TV ad" indie artists even if she tried her best to anticipate and pre-empt being labelled a sellout hipster.

Ofc a feminist wants power not equality, hypocrisy is the fastest way up the ladder but she needs everyone to believe she is authentic first.
>>
>>68713653

>>68703427

>>
Fuck your waifu.
>>
>>68713833
>she needs everyone to believe she is authentic first.
And Grimes proved again and again that she's authentic. You can't be more authethic than making your own stuff from A to Z (complete control). How many female artists could claim that? And even assuming she would be fake, if her music sounds this great, it wouldn't matter.
>>
>>68714246
>>68714278
Stop it, retard. Fuck you and your shitposting.
>>
>>68713833
>even if she tried her best to anticipate and pre-empt
'Try'? Anon, she DID anticipate and pre-empt falling for that stereotyping - by saying things like the quote above DURING the time she was first breaking out into the mainstream - not after (look at the date on that interview.)

>hypocrisy is the fastest way up the ladder
Which I guess is why Grimes' ascent to stardom has proved to be a slow but steady process - because she definably isn't a hypocrite.
>>
>>68714308
Ayy
>>
>>68713653
>I know sex sells, for sure,” she says. “And I definitely have played that card.

This is what I mean by hypocritical. None of anything she has done has screamed "P in V sex positive", yet she claims to have done it while being heavily clothed and concealing her sexual features at all costs... if anything she is nothing but resentful of sex existing.

it goes over nicely for the tumblr crowd who want others to believe in the falsities beneficial to them.
>>
>>68714508
she's just trying to sound cool and savvy and like an expert marketer.

stick around and you'll find that's a trend among most of her interviews.
>>
>>68714508
That isn't hypocritical. What is wrong in being tasteful when dealing with this sensible topic? Be a Body is about masturbation but it's not obvious. I admire her finesse.

This explains her quirky mix of experimental and pop: http://www.austinchronicle.com/daily/music/2012-10-04/surrealist-yuppie-grimes/

>CB: [Laughs] Everyone calls us hipsters, and we decided we’re not really hipsters. We were trying to decide where we fit in the spectrum of sub-genres, and we kind of concluded that we’re surrealist yuppies, because we’re really into mainstream pop music and hi-fi things and catchy things and making things awesome. We’re into working really hard and eating healthy food and exercising, and we’re also really into psychedelic experimentation and being weird. Obviously doing weird things with our music.

Relevant portion quoted in full:

>AC: I’ve been following you on Twitter. Lately I keep seeing tweets about K-pop artist PSY’s “Gangnam Style.” What do you think about that song?
>
>CB: [Laughs] I really, really love that song. I think it’s really awesome because he wrote the song, choreographed the dance, and engineered the whole thing. It's different from a lot of K-Pop, because he’s really responsible for everything. He actually works at the label that does G-Dragon’s stuff. He’s one of those behind the scenes guys.
>
>AC: You said something about it being a surrealist yuppie anthem. What do you mean by that?
>
>CB: [Laughs] Everyone calls us hipsters, and we decided we’re not really hipsters. >
>A surrealist yuppie is a type of person who's between the hipsters and the mainstream, who's still doing creative things, but isn’t disdainful of mainstream success. Just because something is engineered by a bunch of guys in suits doesn’t make in necessarily bad. We think PSY is the king of the surrealist yuppies because he's really rich and successful. He writes songs for pop stars, but he's also a total weirdo and clearly very intelligent and talented. He’s doing interesting and subversive things in the context of pop music. He’s the most successful surrealist yuppie that we know.

how can a person who's clearly against capitalist system (pic related - though it was always kind of obvious if you read between the lines) intentionally use its exploits of it to become famous? is she a sociopath or what? she's perpetuating the system by going with it to go "up the ladder" faster, also signed to rocnation for fucks sake
Bold fucking letters on 'intentionally', I don't think most artists have consciousness of what they do like she does
are we (the "fans") just pieces in her little game? whose objective is to be a popstar -for whatever reason- and "gain more power" as fast as possible

if only thing honest about her is her music, what's even the point of discussing her as a person? she'll change the public perception of her as she deems necessary

>how can a person who's clearly against capitalist system (pic related - though it was always kind of obvious if you read between the lines) intentionally use its exploits of it to become famous?
A clever person uses anything they find to achieve his/her goals. She's subverting the system from within.

>is she a sociopath or what?
Aren't all people sociopaths? When it was the last time you unconditionally really cared about a stranger? People are driven by interest.

>she's perpetuating the system by going with it to go "up the ladder" faster
She's not perpetuating anything, she's just getting the most from her work like any intelligent person would do. She's aware of her skills and she's very ambitious.

>also signed to rocnation for fucks sake
Just management, her label is still 4AD. She signed to a proper mgmt company probably being sick of being overworked and exploited by her old label, Arbutus.

>Bold fucking letters on 'intentionally', I don't think most artists have consciousness of what they do like she does
Don't talk about consciousness when dealing with music industry. As long you put a price tag on your product, you're just a seller selling a product. Trust me, you would do the same.

>are we (the "fans") just pieces in her little game? whose objective is to be a popstar -for whatever reason- and "gain more power" as fast as possible
Does it matter? If you feel that she manipulates you, what stops you from ceasing being a fan and just listening to her music?

>if only thing honest about her is her music, what's even the point of discussing her as a person? she'll change the public perception of her as she deems necessary
Because she's an interesting person. We like her as she is. And she's far nicer unconditionally than most artists.

1, 3 and 4: she's not subverting anything, she's going with the game and using her manipulation skillz, she's making rich and powerful people like jay z even more rich and powerful, and she will continue to do so as she gets more famous
2 don't act like a middle ground doesn't exist.. there's different levels of caring about people, of course you are most probably going to be moved by interest in some way, unless you're exceptional, the thing that varies is the level of that interest
6 that's what I, not even consciously, will do. as humans we're always manipulated but casual talk about manipulating people can only disgust me
7 but she isn't honest at all! you don't even know what you're discussing

anything I didn't reply to I agree with

>The first time you hear Claire Boucher, better known as Grimes, you’ll probably ask yourself a couple of questions: What in the hell is this music, and why would anyone listen to it? Her voice is high-pitched and freaky, like a robotic Minnie Riperton—or even Minnie Mouse—and her backing instrumentals sound like Nine Inch Nails put into a blender with Enya. But then you won’t be able to stop thinking about her. You’ll find yourself watching and re-watching her mind-bendingly fascinating videos, Google-stalking her backstory, and humming her songs while you brush your teeth. Grimes is the kind of artist you become obsessed with, the kind whose music transports you to a weird and shadowy world you never want to leave. And the critics agree: her latest release, Visions, was named one of 2012’s best albums by NME, Pitchfork, The Guardian, and The New York Times.

>Grimes is that rare musical artist who actually seems like an artist, with all the eccentricities that come along with that title.

>Your personal style is constantly morphing. How important do you think self-presentation is in terms of your art?

>I think it’s very important. I mean, if the music isn’t good, then it doesn’t matter what you look like. But on the other hand, whatever you look like, you’re creating a context for your art. With that in mind, I want to create an image that’s simultaneously interesting and beautiful, but not super-sexual or particularly feminine.

The weirdest was acting in this Can-Con [Canadian sci-fi convention] movie. I’m not going to tell you the name, because I don’t want you to find it. I also did a lot of postering, which in Montreal is the worst job ever, because it’s negative 40 degrees, and the flyers are blowing out of your hands and cutting you with paper cuts, and your hands are purple ’cause it’s so cold.

Why are u so triggered? There are some NIN influences in her music, listen to Caladan, Kill V. Maim's instrumental, Dream Fortress, Urban Twilight, Colour of Moonlight. Don't forget that NIN also did some chill pieces like La Mer or A Warm Place.

>sounds like a bunch of reverbed preset synths done in a day
>being so delusional
Why nobody else did her music is it's just a bunch of presets? And btw, why electronic artists are citicized for using presets while the rock artists are forgiven for using the same tired guitars, bass and drums sounds (which are like presets too)?

Listen up kid, it matter what you do with what you have. If I give you some presets could you give me a song good enough to be #1 on P4K's list? (I'm talking about Oblivion)

the article was exaggerating the quality of her music in an almost seemingly satirical manner. the same quality of satire that ur hilarious defense reply instills

her music is popular because of her personal branding rather than the music - the aesthetic choices and persona portrayed. same thing with mac demarco and tyler the creator. If u can open ur mind for two and a half seconds u'd understand that i am not saying anyone is making shitty music but grimes, mac demarco and tyler the creator are all pitchfork favourites.

Although given the manner of how u r white knighting, i wouldn't expect u to have any compositional knowledge abt music or the relation to pop culture n music and you are also probably obese and/or 16 yrs old

>her music is popular because of her personal branding rather than the music - the aesthetic choices and persona portrayed.
You couldn't be further from the truth. Her personal branding would be nothing without her good music. People are listening to her music. Do you believe her fans are idiots fooled by her branding? How much could you like someone based only on branding? Think, idiot.
>If u can open ur mind for two and a half seconds u'd understand that i am not saying anyone is making shitty music but grimes, mac demarco and tyler the creator are all pitchfork favourites.
Grimes is also NME favorite (they gave her AOTY for AA), The Guardian, Spin, Stereogum, Rolling Stone, and whatever music publications exist. And no, she's not shitty because you want that or because she's a P4K favorite. Trash argument.
>Although given the manner of how u r white knighting, i wouldn't expect u to have any compositional knowledge abt music or the relation to pop culture n music

But I'm also obsessed with becoming a pop star.
http://pitchfork.com/features/interview/8774-grimes/

>Her success as a musician meant she began to miss classes and ultimately she was kicked out. Although her parents are divorced, it’s all happy families at home. ‘Most people have terrible step-parents, but both my step-parents are really f***ing cool.’ She pauses. ‘I feel terrible saying this, but the divorce didn’t really affect me. Maybe I’m a sociopath.’
http://grimes-claireboucher.tumblr.com/post/139968776965/grimes-i-always-feel-weird-selling-art-text

All artists - especially the really good ones - are at least somewhat sociopathic (it goes with the territory.) However most are incapable of being very open/honest about that fact with themselves, let alone other people - a fact that almost invariably leads to ruination and tragedy. The fact that Claire Boucher is so clearly keyed up, open, and honest about her own inconsistencies is a huge reason why I think she's so exceptional (besides her obvious musical talents.)

Because psychological disorders only qualify as such if a person is incapable of accounting for them in their own lives, and if a person as clearly insanely talented as Grimes can figure out how to channel that insanity safely, the sky's the limit insofar as what she may be capable of achieving over the entire course of her career.

tumblr has hundreds of millions of users and she embodies their general culture of values perfectly, some of them are coming along for the ride because they were pandered to. Haters actually mean what they say (irrespective of how misguided those thoughts may be.) Trolls only say things for the express purpose of riling people up - whether they consider those things to be true or not is besides the point.

Exactly.

Anyway... getting back to the actual topic/purpose of these threads:

>“The Ac!d Reign Chronicles” is not revolutionary; Grimes and HANA lip-sync to their songs, dancing in visually interesting environments. But revolution, like this 40-minute array of DIY visual confetti, is spontaneous. And this spontaneity tells us, louder than any other message, that this is fun. Grimes and HANA choose to end their project, which is as personal as it is performative, as much a collage of memories as conscious aesthetic choices, with a retrospect of the creative process. Here is the reality that Grimes restricts, and the reality is that, for Grimes and HANA, this is fun. They laugh, they are not normal, their art is not “normal,” they stand outside of the modern world and history, manipulating it through art. This, in itself, a small type of revolution. Perhaps hearing that Grimes has ventured into the world of music-films — the fact that I would expect something revolutionary at all — says enough.

>Who Says Girls Can't Find Music? We Talked to the Female A&R Who Signed Grimes

>Because of the internet, there’s so much information all the time. It’s not about when you hear about someone, it’s about when they grab your attention so hard you can’t ignore it anymore. With Grimes, I was already aware of her, she’d made two albums and an EP. I was on my way to Pop Montreal, and I met her manager at the time, who ran the label she was on, and found out that they were looking for a partnership, someone that they could work with outside of Canada. Her music at that point was not obviously commercial, so they were talking to independent labels. There were a lot who really liked her, but I remember Claire saying we were pretty much the only ones who would take Visions and put it out just as it was, other labels apparently asked for her to rework it with a producer.

>The other thing I would say about Grimes is that there was so much happening around her at that time that I assumed she was already working with a bigger label. The first time I went to see her play and I was kicking myself for missing that opportunity. It was the best show I’d seen for a new artist at that time. The next day I met her manager and they said they were looking for partners and I literally ran back to my room to email my boss her record. What I’m trying to say is that you don’t need a label anymore to get things started, a good label will enhance what you are already doing. By the time Claire was signed, she was already releasing records on a small imprint, touring and doing interviews, and she had a visual presence. These days, a label has the most impact if you’ve already got the wheels in motion before they’ve got involved.

>What even is an "industry plant"?

Any artist/group recruited by a major player in the industry to enact a pre-defined role/persona in the service of creating an artistic product. For a good example of an industry plant see an artist like The Monkeys - a group conceived of by two non-musician television producers and then populated by a group of hired musician-actors for a TV show. For a good example of a non-industry plant see an artist like Grimes - a popstar persona conceived of by the same person who physically inhabits it as a role.

this is such a weird post.

> Grimes isn't selling her sex in the way *I* want, so she isn't doing it at all and is therefore a hypocrite
nice

>she's making rich and powerful people like jay z even more rich and powerful

if you have any job, you're making someone rich and powerful more rich and powerful. It's not true that she's perpetuating capitalism just by working within it - or at least not more than anyone who works for anyone, we all have to. If she's supporting anti-capitalist movements then that's how she's anti-system, and that's consistent I think. I wonder how she treats people that work for her?

Very well. For instance, her dancers Linda and Alyson seem more like friends than employees. They even featured on her latest videos. "Grimes is an asshole" is the fakest meme ever.

Honestly can't decide whether this article is supposed to be satirical or not. But either way the music video commentaries contained therein are pretty fun:

>The most iconic of these, in my opinion, is the over-saturated Marie Antoinette; complete with cat eye sunglass seen romping around a (historically referential? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_Court_Oath ) tennis court. In this image, Grimes is tackling the pop intensity of her album – the overdone aristocrat at play reminiscent of today’s glitzy pop stars – and makes a clear point to differentiate herself, most pointedly by drenching her gown in blood.

>Boucher has a hard time censoring herself in interviews, or on social media, which means that she provides a steady stream of content for music Web sites, whose readers love to express their sharply differing opinions of her. “I feel like if I read about myself from the media I would hate me,” she says. “I’d be, like, ‘Fuck that bitch!’ ”

>Another song, more punkish, sounded like a pop manifesto set to music: “Something you’re dismissive of is the reason I wake up.” But this recording was ineligible for the album, because Boucher didn’t write it: it was a cover of a track by Default Genders, Brooks’s current project. “The vocals are maybe kind of embarrassing,” Boucher said. “But they really liked it in the session.”

>Brooks brightened—he was learning about this for the first time. “That’s all I need to hear,” he said. “If Jay Z likes my song, I’m good.”

When are we going to hear THIS SONG?
