I am starting to unironically think that Phil Collins's works from the 80s had just as much artistic integrity as anything Peter Gabriel did.

Gabriel reveled in weird, brooding art-rock, while occasionally dabbling into meta explorations of fame, turning "pop", and "selling out" (think: Big Time, Sledgehammer, Steam)

Collins and 80s Genesis instead seemed to have decided to turn themselves into a drag act, a farcical portrayal of a "legitimate" band that had decided to chase the mainstream money (while writing better pop music ironically than most of their pop contemporaries did authentically), while every so often dropping little hints like Mama, I Don't Care Anymore, Take Me Home, and Land of Confusion to let us know that they could still do brooding, thought-provoking art rock as well as anyone in the game.
