Slowdive is better than MBV

Also can someone make a nutshack shoegaze cover? Thanks

p4k made a top 50 shoegaze albums list. What are your guys' thoughts on it?
http://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/9966-the-50-best-shoegaze-albums-of-all-time/

It is a pretty good list, but I would sad to see there that skywave's synthtastic isn't on there. I would probably recommend this list to anyone wanting to get into shoegaze as it pretty much has all of the essentials.

Surprise! It ends with slowdive and MBV.

I know it would but for fuck's sake. It's like every "top 100 video games" list ending with Ocarina Of Time or every "top 100 movies" list ending with The Godfather.

The albums are fantastic it's just that I'd like to see some variation.
>>
>>68651037
Shit, that's cool I'm only beginning to listen to this genre and I was at a loss about what to listen to. I mean, I follow the chart on the wiki but having some text to describe the album or something is nice too to pick something
>>
>>68651116
Nah it would be stupid and edgy to not have Loveless at the top. Shoegaze isn't varied or large or old enough to be compared to video games or film like that
>>
>>68651183
Yeah I think p4k did a good job with this list. I disagree with some of the album choices, but overall this does a way better job of describing albums than any flowchart or simple list could. Also the list only represents shoegaze, no dream pop or proto-shoegaze on it.
>>
>>68651201
Well I don't know. It wouldn't have to be a contrarian choice, but Loveless could easily be #2 and Souvlaki could be #3.

I suppose you're right though.
>>
>>68651037
>no Skywave
>no Astrobrite
Nah, it's shit.
>>
If not Loveless or Souvlaki, what would be a good choice for #1?
I wanna say isn't anything but that's mbv too...

>What are your guys' thoughts on it?
Overall, it's not bad. It's largely what I'd expect. Thoughts on specific albums on the list:
>lovesliescrushing - Bloweyelashwish at 46
Probably too low.
>Drop Nineteens - Delaware at 36
Definitely too low. Underrated album in general.
>A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar at 35
Honestly, I'd replace that with Sea When Absent and rank it higher.
>Alcest - Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde at 32
I've never really bought into that being really a shoegaze album. I think it's much more just black metal with shoegaze influences.
>Medicine - Shot Forth Self Living at 29
I'd put it top 15 easily.
>Pale Saints - The Comforts of Madness at 21
I might put that Top 10, actually.
>Chapterhouse - Whirlpool at 17
I know I may be in the minority, but I'd put that in my own TOp 5. It's perfect.
>My Bloody Valentine - m b v
I know Loveless is #1, and I know they're not going to put three MBV records in the top 10, but this record really is amazing.
>Catherine Wheel - Chrome at 9
Way the fuck too high. Not even close to Top 10 for shoegaze. Not even fucking close.
>The Verve - A Storm in Heaven at 6
Way the fuck too high. I guess I'm okay with it being on the list, but putting that up against albums like Going Blank Again, Isn't Anything, Nowhere, Souvlaki, and Loveless is a fucking joke.

The fact that Astrobrite's Crush isn't on this is fucking insane. Don't give me your "b-b-b-but it's derivative" bullshit. Just because it didn't break new ground doesn't mean it's not great. At the very least, it's easily Top 50. Also, Flying Saucer Attack's s/t should've been there.
>>
>>68651401
>Depression Cherry
I liked the album as a whole but really hated the first track. To me it taints the whole thing.
>>
>>68651037
Why is nothing even on there
>>
>>68651037

>>
>>68651037
>No Skywave
>Wrong APTBS album (should be Exploding Head)
>No Screen Vinyl Image

>>68652686
Easily in top 25, but it's an EP and not an album. That said their Around EP wouldn't be far either.

I'd be okay with that. It's not the most innovative or unique shoegaze album, but to me its quintessential for the genre. It's everything that makes 90's shoegaze great.

to me this is more interesting than anything just because it says a lot about what's considered "shoegaze". There's a lot of good albums out there that were not considered because the listmakers didn't consider them Shoegaze, when they very well could be considered as such.

Does this list properly reflect the genre? Is it to narrow in its definition? Perhaps even to broad, or missing the core tenets entirely?
>>
>>68661981
from what I saw, some people were mainly complaining about artists like Cocteau Twins not making the list, but I think p4k is making a distinction between dream pop and shoegaze

people might have been in more of a shugazi mindset than a shoegaze one
>>
>>68661981
The list is pretty broad anyway, sure it doesn't have Cocteau Twins, but it does include Mercury Rev. The criteria is probably dreaminess+noise, and they're ignoring the stuff that lacks the power
>>
>>68662048
Or the obvious walls of sound, cause of souvlaki
>>
>>68658911
>treating gala and pubic fruit like they're actual releases and not compilations
>>
>>68658911
I can't get over Yerself is Steam being on there, its amazing but not shoegaze.

Also fuck Boo radleys and Chrome being #9 of all things.
Props for Gala at #8, props for The Veldt.
No Sweet Trip, soundpool or astrobrite is fucking lame. Eh even p4k isn't autistic enough to make a perfect list, but its great they even have a list
>>
>>68662048
I'm pretty sure Cocteau Twins aren't on there because they are proto-shoegaze. They said they arbitrarily chose psychocandy as the starting point and didn't include anything before that. It would be hearsay to not include bands like Cocteau twins or Spacemen 3.

They got into Pitcfork top 10 and are among the highest rated shoegaze bands on RYM, yet here barely anyone cares about them with most people thinking they were just ok britpop and mediocre overhyped nu-gaze like LSD, Nothing, Whirr and Candy Claws gets talked about lot more.
