on paper I really should love neofolk but other than some notable exceptions I find it to be really grating. mostly I wish more of the genre took more influence from current 93 and less from DiJ

What kind of drum are they using here? I've seen them use it a lot live, it's not a snare, it's a really large, deep sort of drum that they use for that effect on this.
