Does anyone feel like this album isn't very sincere? Compared to the previous albums this seems like they're just forcing an image. Kinda sad honestly. I love the album but I always have this thought hearing it.

You are alone.
Not only on this, but in every single aspect of your life.
And you are going to die alone.
>>
>>68615874
It's a bad feel. But I'm pretty sure I'm right about this.

I agree anon, there's no way The Great Pumpkin would choose this album
>>
most of it i agree, but surf's up is a great song that feels genuine
>>
>>68615724
I would say about 6/10 of it isn't (everything besides the three Brian songs and Disney Girls). Great album though.
>>
>>68615724
>Compared to the previous albums this seems like they're just forcing an imag
What image are they forcing?
>>
>>68616354
Counterculture
>>
>>68616368
How is Surf's Up or Till i Die a counterculture song?
>>
I swear that if I were a little gay, and super smart, I would go back in time to 1967 and not only help Brian finish SMiLE but I'd also start a strange bromance with him that would lean a little bit more to the "romance" and less on the "bro", but it'd be ok because it's not gay unless the balls touch/you say "no homo".
But yuh.
Brian Wilson is fucking amazing.
>>
>>68616396
I guess I should've said that the Brian songs are authentic but I mean, it's pretty easy to tell they were trying to change their image
>>
>>68616459
How is Lookin At Tomorrow and Disney Girls counterculture?
>>
>>68615724
How does an album that contains the song surfs up come off as insencere?
>>
>>68616529
Because there's 9 other songs that aren't Surf's Up and 7 songs that weren't written by Brian Wilson.
>>
>>68617045
The beach Boys arent just Brian Wilson you dummy
>>
>>68617078
Go to bed Mike
>>
>>68615724
Good album overall but you're absolutely right. They were desperate for relevance at this point. Notice how they were putting out an album every year and couldn't settle on one particular sound. Then when their greatest hits release in the mid 70s was a huge success they slowed way down and almost everything after that was shit.
>>
>>68617078
I didn't say they were. If anything I said that only Brian Wilson is sincere. But in reality all I implied was that only Brian (and one Bruce song) came off as sincer on this album.
>>
>>68617078
How did you get that out of his post?
>>
>>68616499
Student Demonstration Time, Don't Go Near the Water, Long Promised Road, and Looking at Tomorrow are mainly what he's referring to ya difficult wank.
>>
>>68617490
And A Day in the Life of a Tree but that doesn't feel forced.
>>
>>68617555
Having to cherry pick the songs you don't think sound forced or insincere isn't a good way to prove you point anon. Makes you sound desperate.
>>
>>68617605
I'm not the original post, and I don't necessarily agree, but I'm clarifying what he was obviously driving at.

>>
>>68617555
that song is good. love brian's forelorn singing at the end. I love to find brian's voice before 15 big ones.
>>
>>68618525
Brian doesn't sing on that song, it was actually their then-manager Jack Rieley singing the main part, with Al and oddly enough Van Dyke Parks singing backups.
>>
>>68615724
>forcing an image
pretty much a fundamental of surf rock
>>
>>68618381
is it really cherrypicking if he listed almost half the songs

>>68618934
you don't listen to the beach boys do you
>>
>>68616144
low key kek
>>
>>68618990
I love some of their shit but yeah I'm not like super deep into it
>>
>>68619005
surf's up really isn't surf rock, the title is ironic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46IQu0yuJzU
>>
>>68619043
It's Baroque pop technically I think but it still has a lot of Surf Rock influence, like really wouldn't exist without having it as a prerequisite ?
>>
>>68618990
>is it really cherrypicking if he listed almost half the songs
None of them are disingenuous anyways
>>
>>68619183
Aren't they? They made a deliberate movement to write more political songs at the suggestion of their manager, something they really had shown no interest in before
>>
>>68619295
This. Though the album is beautiful, the producer influenced it a lot.
>>
>>68618785
I knew Rieley sang the main part with Parks backing but the last 20 seconds has to be Brian. Please... PLEASE GOD... Yeah I really miss 1960's brian if he'd be my bestfriend today he'd probably be my bestfriend.
>>
>>68619907
That's an amazing part, but it's Jardine. I don't think Brian sang on anything aside from Til I die and Surf's up.

is Van Dyke really singing backup? I can't think of any songs he sang vocals on with the Beach Boys? Are there any?
>>
>>68622260
from what i know thats the only song van dyke was on
i feel like every time that song is mentioned vans vocals are brought up
>>
>>68622260
do you guys think that dennis and carl were good songwriters
not in comparison to brian, but in comparison to the average writer
>>

Only two of the songs. That's a tiny fraction of the album.
>>
>>68623882
yes. I'm not a huge fan of Dennis stuff but its clear he had talent. Carl outside this album didn't write much. His contributions were more on riffs and production. He was a very talented producer. That said, most people would kill to write something like Feel Flows in their career
