Hailing from Croydon, Sudden Impact enjoyed a rough reputation as being one of the few directly racist RAC from Britain. Aside from releasing stickers featuring hooded Klansmen holding up a black victim's severed head with the tagline "Death to Nigger Scum," the band would publish nasty numbers like "White Slag" under the pseudonym The Croydon Criminals. After striking a deal with Rock-O-Rama Records, these blokes dished out an appropriately named, rough shod Oi! album "Storm." Their music was fittingly spirited if a pinch awkward due to the clunky lyrics.

The band would hit the studio again to release a sophomore album "Rock & Roll Rebels." Eddie Stampton published a scathing review in "The White Nationalist Skinhead Movement," lambasting everything from the album cover to the music itself. While the songwriting is still as cringeworthy as before with the occasional off-key delivery to boot, a skinhead band trying their hands at ballad-driven Hard Rock has that inimitable charm characteristic of passion-driven amateurs which lasts long after the first listen.

The music here isn't far off from the band's idol Ian Stuart who was no stranger to ballads himself. The release of "White Rider" set a precedent for many to emulate, but if the interviews with Sudden Impact are any indication, Hard Rock was a natural framework for the band. They grew up on a steady diet of AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Motörhead, so it's hardly a surprise they'd incorporate these ideas in the development of their sound. Other skinhead bands would later turn to that sound to a much greater degree than these gents had.

A raw, buzzing yet faintly hollow blues riffs define the heavier tracks here with the occasional guitar solo belted out for good measure. The album opens with a punky but tepid "See You All in Hell" with made distinct by its shouted refrain and sweet solo which comes roaring in towards the middle. "White Heat" and "Quest for Fire" are much bluesier than the preceding tracks, but much similar in all other respects. "Hail the Warriors" stands out as the album's highlight. Full of simple, but energetic riffs to keep your blood pumping and keyboards to deepen the impact, the song achieves everything it sets forth.

The first real ballad is "God of Thunder," which opens with a soft acoustic before our vocalist proudly hails Thor, hopeful he will return to earth to deliver Europe from the red menace. Kudos to whoever thought it keen to add some delay to the vocals. The song electrifies midway for the refrain before returning to the acoustics. Horribly off-key vocals hinder the impact of "'til Your Dying Day" which mourns Adolf Hitler's last moments; a forgettable and worthless track. Towards the B-side's end is "Fight to the Finish." Full of keyboards and acoustic riffs, the singer boasts of Nazi skinheads marching through the streets, optimistic they will one day win. The instrumental "Anthem" closes the album with its wailing guitars and gritty riffs. The track drags on but belts out a memorable solo here and there.

The rest of the album more or less veers between Hard Rock and Skinhead Oi!, but even with a few duff tunes, the music succeeds on its own merits and those curious about RAC's transition from Oi! to Hard Rock will find this listen rewarding.

Highlights: "Hail the Warriors," "God of Thunder," "Fight to the Finish" and "Anthem"

The descriptions I read of RAC never seem to correlate to reality ot the genre's sound, unfortunately.
I go in expecting this really harsh, martial sort of primitive and minimalist punk music and I just end up with pub rock shite.

Ultimately, modern black metal bands taking a lot of influence from RAC music appeal to me more than actual RAC music does. The closest I came to enjoying proper RAC was some of the early Skrewdriver and Combat 84 stuff.

How did you feel about this?
>>
>>68616270
The same as always when it comes to RAC. Just sounds like pub rock to me.
>>
>>68616292
What is Pub Rock anyway? The Macc Lads?
>>
>>68616308
Sort of, but the Macc Lads are a comedy band innit. Pub rock is usually more earnest than that.
>>
>>68616358
Ah, I see. Despite my neverending love for Oi! and RAC, Pub Rock's a bit of a blindspot for me.

I've listened to a range of RAC and can speak of the good stuff. I like Sudden Impact, but it's far from the greats. Stuff like New Glory, BattleZone, Bound For Glory, Celtic Warrior, Violent Storm, Break the Sword/Day of the Sword, Chauves Pourris, Estirpe Imperial, Vengeance, Fortress, Skullhead, Evil Skins, Elite Terror.

It all depends on what you like. If you're into Metal in general, I can certainly recommend a range of that stuff aside from NSBM.
>>
>>68616495
I'm definitely open to recommendations. Like I said, I'm into some of Skrewdriver's early stuff(not the apolitical 70s material but the stuff that they did after coming out as a right-wing band; think Boots And Braces / Voice Of Britain) and Combat 84. That's the stuff that came the closest in its sound to how I imagined RAC would sound like when I first heard about it and didn't actually hear it yet.
Any sort of RAC you can think of which has similar vibes to the stuff I liked here >>68616200 I'm definitely into checking out.
>>
>>68616644
If you like NSBM, you can't go wrong with Spear of Longinus, but I take it you're already quite familiar with them. They're justifiably hailed as the best from NSBM:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCrHo2IoV9o
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjU2616GuOA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDNIYwzxasM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftN_Lj_8foI

If you like ultra primitive sounding RAC, then I'd definitely recommend some of RAC's earliest bands like Peter and the Wolf, Squadron, Open Season or The Ovaltinees. All those bands, especially latter two, have that recorded-in-your-rectum shit-fi level scuzz.

Peter & the Wolf might be a bit too traditional for you, but anyway:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiiGc66_Qzg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLhYUu07tIo

The Ovaltinees has that early Punk vibe. The production improves on the British Justice EP

Ovaltinees:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zclhZi1bJs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciUkUGPv5RY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyCzt_Brhe0

Squadron has that Motorhead meets Skrewdriver vibe which might appeal to you. The last song goes balls-to-the-wall Thrash (the real fun begins around the 3 minute mark):

Open Season came later, but nonetheless...

Shit mate, thanks a lot. I'm quite familiar with Spear Of Longinus but I'm completely new to all these RAC bands and from a quick listen through a few of the links, I think I'm gonna be looking further into a lot of this stuff.
Squadron in particular have a properly impressive sound going on.

>>68617171
If you use RYM, follow Turkey_Beard, HorseMouth and asadv. Those guys know their shit.

If you like Squadron, be sure to check out Vengeance. Has that same Motorhead meets Skrewdriver vibe. Chock-full of aggression with that English Bulldog grunter vocalist to boot.

Hah, I've actually read some of that Turkey_Beard lad's reviews of GG Allin and various noise bands. He's a pretty entertaining reviewer. Had no idea about him being into RAC though, I'll check his profile out.
Liking this Vengeance band as well. Thanks again.

Also, if you care for non-English RAC, you can't go wrong with Kontingent 88. Their sophomore album is straight up Hard Rock with Metal influences, but their first album is much punkier:

If you like Heavy Metal a la NWOBHM, then you can't go wrong with Estirpe Imperial:

And then there's Condemned 84. They're rumored to be RAC, although their lyrics rarely, if ever, reflect this. It may just be a case of guilt-by-association.

Not talking to myself. He was just kind enough to give me the time of night.

Look at his posting style. He's obviously not American.
