I know people who have heard a lot of albums, and their favorites are commonly known albums. Which is a testament to how good those albums they feel are, considering the huge amount they know about music and have heard. I don't think it's that simplistic to assume if someone lists well known albums as favourites then they must know very little. Those albums come up often because a lot of people think they really are that good.

Also people who list obscure albums, could seem like they know a lot. In actuality just have spefic taste and don't ever venture outside of that. In both situations the assumption could be right, but people jump to that conclusion far too quickly. As if it's a clear cut either/or situation, when it's not always that straightforward.

Though you have a point, most of these albums are regarded by the masses and more popular media publications as being better than the other albums of all times (or their times). The popular media influencing the masses and such in a "What?! Bro no way, Pet Sounds is one of the best albums ever. Everyone thinks that!" hivemind sort of way.

Plus you speak of people who have listened to a lot of music and still regard popular albums as their favorites. They have experience. Many people have plenty of experience, and I, for example, have found in my experience that people that praise certain releases haven't heard of much beyond what critics, or others of the hive, consider to be great.
