/triphop/ thread
post your favourite trip hop albums or songs i'll start with Massive Attack's Heligoland
I've always enjoyed trip-hop, but it's such a limited genre that it's not even worth discussing.
All I can is that Mezzanine and Dummy are my fav albums from the genre, and I've always felt that Maxinquaye is overrated (Tricky's later albums are overlooked imo)
Trip-hop definitely spans more than the 90's Bristol artists. Maybe it also depends on how you define the genre.
Bonobo's older works count for me!

TM Juke - Knee Deep

No, thats downtempo.

Isn't trip-hop in general not a downtempo genre? I always feel weird about considering downtempo a genre in itself rather than an attribute of that genre.

Okay let me try again.

Downtempo is the main genre of which trip hop is one style. Downtempo is basically all low-tempo ''electronic music'' meant for outside the club / beach etc and with a beat rather than straight ambient.

Shoegaze/Downtempo

Downtempo again.
Kid Loco - A Grand Love Story
i like this more than maxinquaye

Shit, lets just make this a downtempo thread then, I'd say trip hop fits under the downtempo umbrella.

The 1990s brought on a wave of slower paced music which was played throughout chillout rooms - the relaxation sections of the clubs or dedicated sections at dance music events.
Downtempo music started to surface around Ibiza, when DJs and promoters would bring down the vibe with slower rhythm and gentler electronic music upon approaching sunrise.
In the late 1980s, trip hop emerged from Bristol, which combined elements of hip hop beats, drum and bass breaks, and ambient atmospheres at a lower tempo.
Lounge, chill out, ambient house, nu jazz, trip hop, psybient and even downtempo as a its own genre within the whole

Yes totally, downtempo covers a lot more, trip-hop is just much more specific

There is definitely a difference between general downtempo and these albums. Also don't always take wikipedia as a source, but these artists are all in the List of Triphop Artists wiki. Maybe I'm autistic.
>>68592443
No, that's triphop
>>68592457
Back in the day when this music was all the rave (no pun intended), we just called it all chillout music.
IMO, trip hop is just the 3 from Bristol and most on Mo' Wax.
