So when I'm on a DAW and it has a VST or whatever and you can hit keyboard keys on the UI to hear certain notes, right? If I were to have a keyboard with a midi output (or anything that is a midi controller I guess) I could record something using that sound profile mapped to the keyboard right?
>>
>>68579040
yeah, what DAW are you using? If your DAW doesn't have to record midi notes I think you should change DAW'S.
>>
How do I sell my beats to big name rappers?
>>
>>68579106
I have FL Studio and Music Creator Touch 6.

I'm new to all this, but at the start of november I'm planning on getting Reaper and BIAS FX/AMPS for my guitars. I'm planning on recording and making music, so I figured a keyboard might be a good investment too so I could use it as a midi device and actually have the physical ability to play the music instead of using pre-made midi clips or drawing it.
>>
>>68579112
post a clyp, so we can see if your beats are good enough.

FL studio can record notes, so a keyboard would be a good investment. You might wanna make sure you understand latency as it may get annoying if you have a shitty cpu.

Ooh, I really like this track a lot! Though, I think that the mids from that bass could be reduced a bit. It's got a boomy tone that isn't exactly pleasing while overpowering in the mix. I really like the way you develop this track a whole dang lot though! Spot on composition.
>>
>>68579338
>https://clyp.it/a0r2aizk
What's the part of the track you're wanting feedback with most? I think personally that the bass part that comes in could do well with a longer decay/release on the pitch envelope. Going the extra mile with making that thing go real sub would be real pleasant, as well as musical if you were to give it movement. It's over halfway there!

https://clyp.it/gfw4fshw
I dig it! But I think that the kick could be a little deeper, and leave more "space" for the mid frequencies. Hell, you could even go as far as automating the tuning of that kick drum to do some interesting melodic "kick-bass".
>>
>>68579575
>What's the part of the track you're wanting feedback with most?
I'm not quite sure. I just wanted opinions. I'm eventually gonna find someone to rap on it because that's what I originally made it for I just haven't found anyone yet. Are you saying I should make the sub deeper?

>I dig it! But I think that the kick could be a little deeper, and leave more "space" for the mid frequencies.
I'll switch out the sample for a deeper one and post it to see what you think. Also, from 1:23 to 2:30 is supposed to have a rap verse on it, but again, I haven't found anyone.

808/Bass is pretty much perfect, quality mix, maybe more panning? Only real criticism is that it sounds too generic.

I really like the vocals, they mesh with the sounds really well. The water/puddle splashing sound has way too much reverb on it.

I plan on having vocals on it eventually, that's why it sounds so "plain." If there was a lot going on as well as vocals, then it would just be a mess. Thanks for the compliment on my 808s though. I don't know how long I've spent getting the art of the 808 down but it's finally paying off.

ive tried but it makes it unnecessarily complex with dotted notes everywhere and lines connecting them inbetween measures even though its a basic ass melody when i hum it

speaking of which how do you figure out notes to a melody in your head?

ear training?
>>
>>68584256
Use a metronome and experiment. A big help to learning to how write sheet music is to read (and play) sheet music.
>>
>>68584256
Learn modes to the point where you can recreate them by memory and it should be fairly easy (since the melodies "in your head" are likely to be in a common mode anyway)
>>
>>68584560
Not him but if I know all the major and minor scales, how to play them, and the chords resulting from those scales and how to play those (as well as some basic chord progressions), will learning modes help me in my composition or improvisation process? I don't understand modes and honestly the subject seems very complicated.
>>
>>68584614
If you know major and minor scales then you already understand modes. That's what they are. Those two are known as Ionian and Aeolian. It helps to realize the major scale is (somewhat interchangeable) with the other 5 greek modes though. If you're in c you can play in g mixolydian to have a section that's tonally centered around g without sounding out of tune. I'm sure there's lots more ideas to discover, I'm not a master myself.

>>
>>68584810
This is more hypothesis than anything else but most things regarding music are relative. There's hardly a noticeable difference between C and D scales until you play the two side by side and the difference becomes very obvious. Similarly, G mixolydian is the exact same notes as C, so playing it won't actually sound any different. The idea is though, there is a "version" of C so to speak which actually uses G as its tonal center (this would be mixolydian). Say you have a lead in a C song and you chose to play leads that mostly emphasize the G (say by playing G on a strong beat, or just more G notes than others, G in the bass line, etc), then the feeling you get is mixolydian, which is not quite the same as C.

>>
>>68585258
I'm pretty clueless, but what makes a song sound good? Is it possible to describe in words? or are good songs "just good"
>>
>>68586052
I would disagree, all music (that is listenable) uses tension and release, that's the reason people listen to music. A piece with truly no tension would be really boring. That's not to say walking on sunshine isn't extremely predictable, but there is tension and release in the song, for example, the chorus to verse. That's the reason pop tunes like to use the 145,154, etc chord progression - it is an easy access to tension and and release (namely tension built by the 4's and 5's released into the 1)
>>
>>68585413

The songs I enjoy the most tend to do one thing well - they set me up and then pull the rug away from under me and it's usually done by using unexpected key changes (not the BoyZone type) and chord progressions, like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyDmt-Yrhww

There's a build in tension caused by the unexpected sections that is eventually released and that's where the enjoyment comes from.

But there's another (more well-travelled) path that instead uses progressions that are completely predictable and these have their own satisfaction to them for people - there's no real tension built up within these pieces but that is (presumably) where the enjoyment comes from - a lot of summer hits come from this stable and it's all about maintaining predictability and not challenging expectation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPUmE-tne5U

I'm not even touching on lyrical content which is another thing altogether - anything from the great American songbook is just as praised for lyrics as it is for melodic and harmonic content.
>>
>>68584643
So you're saying that the Ionian mode starting on C is also known as C major and the Aeolian mode starting on C is also known as C minor???

Does that mean that the other modes are different types of scales that sound different from necessarily "happy" or "sad" or are they varying degrees of, like, "less/more happy" and "less/more sad"?
>>
>>68586134

Sorry m8 for deleting my post - I'd made part of it unclear, and I might agree with you now you mention it so treat >>68586171 with some scepticism - the tension/release is of a different sort but you're right that it is still there.
>>
>>68586206
Yes, though it may be better for memorization purposes to think of them in the context of a single major scale. For example, choosing to start c major 2 degrees down = Aeolian mode A (the note you started on).

Keep in mind the "happy/sad" dichotomy is just a way to simplify the concept of dissonance and consonance, so its not necessarily set in stone. Harekning back to my previous statement, its all about relativity. Major is technically the standard "happy" scale but if you start in a more dissonant mode moving into Lydian or Mixolydian can feel happy as well, but it will have a different sound and a different mood. Your last sentence is more or less how it is, but think of it in the context of scale degrees. The "strength" of a degree in the Ionian scale is directly correlated with the "strength" of its mode.
>>
>>68586237
the difference between the two, I think (not entirely clear which part of the bowie song you're talking about after all - it is 9 minutes) is rhythmic tension/release, which is somewhat of an abstract, almost none-existent concept. In walking on sunshine there is no change to the pulse of the music throughout, unlike the bowie song. However there's no music theory for rhythmic tension so its more a thing that you have to feel your way through, though I believe the effects ARE there...

I don't get it. Isn't the point of the drumpads to sound softer when you tap them lightly and full sound/volume when you go harder?

Does velocity refers to something else?

I finished this track and I'd really appreciate some help with sidechaining/mixing/mastering.

Right now I've got 14 dry tracks which sound like this:

https://clyp.it/1z2c2v4t

First of all I'm planing on EQ and compress every track, but I'd really like to know how you'd organize the tracks in order to sidechain what has to be sidechained. Should I send every track but the kick track to a bus and then sidechain that bus to the kick? Should I send every track but the kick and bass track to a bus and then sidechain that bus to the bass and kick? What about the other tracks?

Feedback really appreciated, I'll post whatever I came up with after your recommendations.

>sidechain

It depends very much on what you're trying to achieve. If you want to use sidechaning as an obvious effect you'd probably want to bus everything but the kick, then sidechain that bus to the kick.

If you want to use sidechaining as a mixing tool to avoid sounds with similar frequencies muddying up then you use your ears first to determine whether you even need to use sidechaining - it's not compulsory if there are no frequencies clashing.

If your kick drum interferes with your bass sound for example though then you'd sidechain the bass sound using the kick to duck the bass sound's level.

What are your thoughts on LANDR? (It's basically a program that will remaster a track for you, all you need to do is click "master") I'm a beginner with mixing and I thought I'd give it a try.

The remaster sounds like the "band" is "tighter" and the bass has more punch, and everything is louder.

I could also say the drums are programmed, guitar was recorded through a fender squire and a roland cube solid state amp with a boss CS-3 turned on the whole time. Everything came into a built in laptop mic.

>>68590372

All you can deal with is generalities if your monitoring isn't revealing issues to you so I get that, in addition any idea of subtlety also goes out the window too since you won't hear subtle changes to sounds either.

Where that matters is when you commit to something that takes your mix somewhere unintended and you fail to spot it, so what I'd recommend is that you look into improving your listening environment and in the meantime use reference mixes in the same vein as your own work for comparison, even with good monitoring reference mixes are useful. Pink noise referencing is also useful if you need to be sure you're not making any fuckhuge errors but be aware it leads to cookie-cutter approaches to frequency balancing if relied upon all the time.

Thank, will try when I'm home. I kinda failed at adding those nkm files as library, I was using that one vst by going File > Open
>>
>>68590731
That will only work if your audio interface as a feature to allow it to work as a mixer independant of the computer
>>
>>68591215
I don't know anything about this but I'd say the PC reduces the the current and the USB takes a small amount from that. I don't think it would be able to handle the full power unless there is some reduction in the cable. (?)
>>
>>68591276

Devices only draw the current they need if the voltage (which is what "pushes" current) remains the same. a PC's USB voltage and a charger's USB voltage will both be 5 volts, the device connected to them is the same device so it will draw the same current in both cases.

>>
>>68591103
I would add some reverb to the synth you introduce around 0:47
And maybe add a snare at some point.
I would also have the main bass synth you're using have a variation to through in every 4 pattern repeats.
Otherwise though I think it sounds good. Those small changes I suggested will bring more variation and excitement.
>>
>>68591276
Dude look at the USB wall adapter and it'll have something like "output: 5v" or something. Check your interface and it should say "input 5v" or whatever. If the numbers are the same, then you can use it.

That's great, thank you so much. What do you think about using Ozone's matching function to match my track to the pink noise curve?
>>
>>68592527

Ozone is really intended for working with completed mixes, while pink noise referencing is a tool for balancing instrument levels as a quick fix.

That said, you could use pink noise in both cases if you use it to balance instrument levels within your DAW and then as a final "last 5%" finishing step in Ozone.

What I wouldn't do is to ignore the instrument balancing and just force a frequency curve upon the completed mix - that wouldn't work.

The take-away is that experienced ears (working with good monitoring) should always be your best judge, all other techniques are useful and the more of them you know the better, but a single process is never 100% constantly the right thing to do - gain experience and trust it instead to tell you when things have been done right.

Guys so I'm thinking of buying my first actual synth and I want to keep my budget at about 200$ (but can go up to 500$ if it's really really worth it) but it seems like there are so many options that I'm not sure what to pick. Do you guys have like a list or any recommendations?

One particular question I do have is this: why would I pick a hardware synthesizer over a software one? I was listening to some minibrute demos and damn they sound hot, but cant the same be achieved a software synth like, say, Serum or Sytrus?

That's it for now, I really don't know where else to ask for this kind of stuff.

If you have a midi controller, go for soft synths like Serum or Sytrus if you like the win95 skin. Analog "fat/warm/depth/anything-ness" is snake oil now that soft synths are so advanced.

The analog synth gets converted into a digital waveform anyway so its only worth it if you are an enthusiast.
>>
>>68595809
I've watched the videos, mane. I know how to use a synth. What I'm not sure about is what type of synth should I invest my money in, like which is the best bang-for-buck.

>>68595865
Good point. Like, say I'm aiming for X sound, say, a lush pad. I could get pretty much the same sound on both synths. So you could say that what really matters is the skill of the guy programming the synth patch, not the synth itself? I mean if I wanted a synth with a ton of variety and possibilities but with a lot of learning potential, the most reasonable choice would be a soft synth like Serum. Especially if I already have a midi controller with faders and knobs. Does that make sense?

Damn... that looks like too much fun. But it's monophonic. Isn't that a huge downside? Not being able to play chords and such?

Sorry for being such an ass pain and asking the same thing over and over, but why would I really buy the moog, which looks and sounds awesome by the way, over a soft synth that is polyphonic and has almost as many bells and whistles?

Maybe I'm just stupid. But I should expect a huge jump in usefulness and performance with such a huge jump in price.
>>
>>68596888
You can expect a drop in usefulness since its tedious to integrate hardware into a DAW. Just get Monark and Massive, or Sylenth.

It doesn't require a special cable. Check on your manufacturer's site to see if it needs drives installed and afterwards go to ableton and to your midi device settings. There should be a preset in the dropdown list specifically for the novation launchpad.

Obviously if you chop up and modulate a sample very heavily, making it unrecognizable, that's no problem. But does it make you a hack if you use royalty free drum loops/other samples? Is this common? I always figured anyone who didn't come up with less common/cliched patterns would be laughed at.

if anyone has some pointers on improving production for my tracks, that would be splendid. i do have a few specific questions as well if someone more knowledgable would humor me.
>but first, latest track: https://soundcloud.com/isaiah-vanderhyden/start-again

1. so i used compression to up the vocals and then again on the master track but it still came out relatively quiet in both aspects. anything i can do there?
2. when i exported my track as an mp3, i exported uncompressed, then uploaded the same track to soundcloud. i understand soundcloud isn't going to sound like a .flac file every single time, but i'm hearing differences in individual track levels between the DAW playing the track, the mp3 i exported, and then the soundcloud version, going best sounding to worst sounding respectively. is that because i have no idea how to master or is that just the nature of the beast, uploading to a lossy site?

thanks to anyone who takes the time to help me out.

>using GB because i am pleb that just starting recording

went to compression option on vocal track, turned it up a little, then turned up the gain until it sounded audible, yet level with the rest of the tracks. lowered the compression on the master track because the overall track was too quiet. i couldn't go too far or it started to get clippy. i assume that's because i had the mic too close to the cab, but whatever, i can fix that in another song.
but yeah, that's how i used compression. lower peaks and troughs to reduce clipping and up the gain to compensate, right? r-right??
>>
>>68603249
That's one way, but if the vocals are in the same frequency as the background it could get lost. You could consider some soft sidechain eq compression, taking the vocals signal to open up a bit of a gap for them to push through louder.
>>
>>68603249
>GB

>>68603410
pls no judge, i'm saving up to buy a real DAW ;_;

>>68603384

>>
>>68603249
>>68602963
Sounds like you just need to get a solid foundation in the basics. Check out videos on the proper use of compression and EQ, and read some SoundonSound articles about it.

http://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/compression-made-easy
http://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/whats-frequency
http://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/mixing-essentials

>>68603525
You might not have to do both, the bump in the vocals might be all you need or the cut in the other tracks might be all you need. That's the basic idea behind complementary EQ, which is what that technique is called.

What's going on with all the ableton hate in here recently? To begin with all the hate was directed at the traditional daws while everyone seemed to be using ableton and fruity, then it turned to the fruity users and now the ableton users are getting it.
So what the fuck is everyone using? I always thought it was 70% Ableton, 29% fruity and 1% other.

I'm a Maschine user myself, but previously was a cubase/logic user.

Anyway I thought I'd post this link up as you guys like to shitpost every new thread with what daw is better. Maybe you can find your answer there or even contribute to the thread if you know why the daw you use is superior to all the others.

Most of the DAW arguments are about things which were valid 5-10 years ago but don't exist anymore. The improvements in the latest versions of the DAWs like AbletonLive9, FL12 basically erase most of the previous arguments.

Does anyone know if the EDM foundations course is worth taking ? I want to learn ableton and it's secrets, I've read the manual and watched a ton of YouTube tutorials so I pretty much know the basics.

What I'm trying to say is that I wanna see and interact with making random full songs as practice so I can get used to it.

AFAIK he does everything in Renoise nowadays. Programming intricate drum patterns is very easy with trackers.

Figuriing it out yourself is going to be faster if you are dedicated. You won't learn everything in a week anyway.

What makes one synth sound diffrent from another synth?
>>
>>68608809
The DAW engine and your ears.
(My red might not be your red)
>>
>>68608864
I guess I should have said physical synths, digital or analogue

all of the components have their own unique character that affects the sound. Even two copies of the same analog synth can sound slightly different from each other.

-snare is retarded
-overusing bitcrusher (there's better sounding ways of achieving lofi like tape emulators and filtering)
-muddy lo mids

otherwise this is dope. Really nice composition

I like it. The kick feels out of place though, either out of key or its too "loose". I really enjoy the violin type sound, the upward arpeggio.

What's the best/fastest way to learn piano for electronic music/pop? Should I just start learning chords?
>>
>>68578986

Word of advice to all these new producers in this thread. If you want to be famous, learn how to make hip hop and more importantly learn how to sample.

just smash your keyboard, play random notes and call it avant garde pop

Scarlet focus rite 2i4 is a great pick. Super silent high quality amps. Should go for used 2i4 off eBay for maximum effectiveness/efficiency. I think you should avoid the 2i2 and the solo (I think that's what it's called) cus they have lower quality amps and break easily.

Learn minor and major scales and the chords (or harmony) that come from them as well as basic chord progressions (or harmonies). You can find all that over at music theory.net

Ear training Is not essential but it's pretty cool, a trained ear will help in melody writing (improv). Checkout teoria.com it has a lot of good exercises too.
