spiderland isn't post rock
soundtracks isn't post rock

Does Pygmalion count as post-rock? I'd say it's pretty much diet Talk Talk, but it's been garnering popularity here recently.
>>68575653
>spiderland isn't post rock
>soundtracks isn't post rock
it's first wave post rock, they part of the formation of the genre
like mercyful fate and venom are first wave black metal despite not sharing many musical similarities with later acts that would come
>>68575653
>>68575774
i'd say it is, it has a similar feel to Hex and Talk Talk
>>68575653
Check
>>68575543
Replace skinny fists with F#A#
>>68575842
add this, pygmalion, and horse stories and we're done here
if we had more space i'd ad something by cul de sac and long fin killie but that'll be good for now
>>68575653
Those are both essential first wave
>>68575543
>>68575922
And this
feel free to fite me
>>68575991
i don't wanna fight you but if you can only fit 9 albums there are too many better albums to put this one in
>>68575991
>Twinkly guitar crescendocore
>Essential post rock

if you could only show someone 9 post rock albums these would be three of them? i don't dislike any of these but why do you think they are essential?
5
tortoise and mogwai are a must

>>68576974
I'm just posting what in my opinion are some of the best albums to get into post-rock, I'm not sure if they are necessarily "deserve to be in the hall of fame" but they are great, and great starters
7
>>68576974
also I think ASMZ and Mogwai are a must (if not Fuck off get free than He Has Left Us.. I guess).
Also soon to be posted Yndi Halda

Ok I see where you're coming from I guess it depends on what the purpose of the chart is. These albums are definitely good at easing someone into the genre\\
8
>>68576974
Mono also, to show the orchestral/Japanese side of post-rock, and World's End Girlfriend is too harsh for beginners/essentials.

yeah there's definitely an argument to be made for all of these
>>68577065
i see what you're doing now, i just saw that later ASMZ album and thought it was an odd choice for essential, even though it's an album I enjoy
and yeah if someone is still kind of new to music world's end girlfriend would probably be a bit much haha
>>68577088
>mfw actually having some kind of human interaction with others about post-rock because all of my friends / most of /mu/ don't like post-rock.
>>68577133
fucking right? much less any music i like at all
i know a girl who likes the mountain goats but besides that i never get to talk to anyone about anything music related
Better than Laughing Stock in my opinion, but they're both great albums.
>>68577186
you can't go wrong with either
like fuck so many people listen to that earth cold dead place album and skinny fists and think that they've heard all post rock has to offer but there's so much great shit in it
>>68575653
Youre retarded
here's another good one
>>68577173
Same here, the most I can get, is to talk about really entry level stuff, mostly dad-rock and popular rock music from the 00s-10s, sometimes 90s electronics (IDM and downtempo).
How about making a bigger chart? Make a few "Top" ones or "core" ones, and then "other favourites" or something. If no one will do it I might tomorrow, I love spending ton of time on this kind of shit.

yeah that's what i was thinking too i'm trying to figure out the best way to arrange it
i was looking at the existing charts and it's just they're just separated by the waves
maybe there could be different sections like maybe one for the more experimental stuff, one for the classical stuff, one for electronic, maybe a section for stuff that was heavily influenced by post rock (like agalloch)
just throwing stuff out there
>>68577419
>influenced by post rock (like agalloch)
sounds good, OM - Adviatic Songs is a consideration for this also IMO.
Also make a post-metal section maybe
>>68577459
>OM - Adviatic Songs
yeah definitely can see a post rock influence in there. A post-metal section would be cool but i think we should try to keep it to stuff more on the post-rock side of it, like Russian Circles. In one of the existing charts it has toe. next to Palmless Prayer under the "third wave" category and those two albums are vastly different
>>68575979
This
>>68575543
Here you go
One row per wave
>>68575543
This should be the chart
Ocean Songs by Dirty Three
Well Oiled by Hash Jar Tempo
Under Glass by Hash Jar Tempo
Labradford by Labradford
The Allegory of Hearing by Roy Montgomery
Spiderland by Slint
Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk
Millions Now Living Will Never Die by Tortoise
Yume Bitsu by Yume Bitsu
There are already multiple good post-rock charts where it's divided into waves. If someone tries to get into the genre and goes from Swans to EITS they won't know what's going on
>>68578940
Exactly. I made this chart for a reason
Definitely these
>>68575839
I'll second this. Though, honestly, I could see both of them being on there. If one of them isn't there, then A Silver Mt. Zion's "He Has Left Us Alone..." definitely belongs there.
>>68578864
>>68578864
fix the 3rd row senpai
>>68579037
What do you suggest
>>68579051
The Seer doesn't belong there imo. TWDY or something might work better
>>68578998
>Eva Luna
>Transient Random Noise
>post-rock
What's wrong with you
>>68579011
This is terrible
>>68579142
you and I can both agree the line between what is and isn't post-rock is thin as a wire, so what is to say that Eva Luna and Transient Random Noise Bursts aren't post-rock?
someone remake this not shitty
>>68576974
u could make an argument for Fuck Off Get Free
although Horses In The Sky is GOAT
What the fuck even is "post-rock"
>>68579218
just a quickly thrown together second wave. I'm not done listening to the early 2000's post-rock yet.
>>68579274
it's kinda a hard thing to define. The original definition described it as "using rock instruments to make music that wasn't really rock" but that could apply to a lot of thing. Some described it as a sub-genre of prog rock, being the natural progression of rock music was moving towards where, instead of the focus being on melody and structure, the focus is more on timbre and textures. Some argue that it is a synthesis of two or more genres to form something that wasn't really either of the genres that it borrows from (for example Djed by Tortoise or Ursus Actos Waterfilis by Gastr del Sol).
As a whole, I'd say post-rock is most of those elements mixed together, with the main thing linking them all is this idea that rock can be more than what it had been for so many years.
>>68579274
Anything after the stone age right?
Fuck /mu/ for not posting the best post rock album of all time yet.
>>68575979
I'm mad that this isn't the second post
Also Spirit Of Eden deserves to be there instead I think
