Does anyone else have to "hide" their real taste in music?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

As in, around normies, you play normie shit. Meaning you have an awareness of what they like, and you know better than to expose yourself as 'weird' to them
>>
>>68542770
If I play something I usually go for something that I like that is also accessible (unless we're really used to each other).
My sister used to only stick to top 40 trash and "pump" music. After four-or-so different rides where she made me turn off my music for being weird, she gave up. I ended up playing loads of different albums. She got used to it. (unless there was something genuinely unpleasant about it).
Now she says she can't listen to the radio anymore, so I guess I kinda won.
>you know better than to expose yourself as 'weird' to them
What are you talking about?
>>
>>68542770
I always have to hide the music i like and as you said im always playing normie shit around normie people
>>
>>68542770
depends if im in the car with them. I just play whatever I like. after a while normies adapt to weird stuff

if its a party i'll play accessible stuff

What better way to claim intellectual superiority?

I don't like to admit in public that I'm a 26 year old who listened to over 300 Kpop albums and EPs since 2008.

I tell people what they want to hear to avoid 'the weird look' or them just saying 'oh...'.
Frank Ocean, Chris Brown, Usher, Bruno Mars, Eminem, Justin Timberlake etc.

Most people ask what genre I listen to just so they can talk about their music taste when asking the same question back to them. Let's be real.

I tend not to hide my taste, especially around my guitarist friend but it doesn't mean he appreciates it. Like, for someone who actually understands music theory/can actually count in time properly/possesses an overall greater technical skill than myself, he has an incredibly poor taste.

He claimed he was a big Foo Fighters fan, so I put some tracks on my mp3 player for a car trip, things like "these days" and "no way back" and apparently he'd never heard them before (seemingly he's only actually heard My Hero/Everlong/Walk). After a while he got fed up and plugged his mp3 player in to play Katy Perry and other big pop hits.

Like, the dude won't even listen to full albums still (unless I force stuff onto him like Weezer/QOTSA/Spoon, which seemed to rank somewhere between "meh" and "alright").

I don't understand how someone can be actively socialising in music circles for a decade, studying music, ect and still have such stinted taste.
>>
>>68542770

Im true to myself not like the 80% in this board ree
>>
I don't hide anything but I'm not retarded. I'm not gonna play grind if I'm on a trip with my family. Self awareness is a thing.
>>
>>68542770

Nope.

Been playing Nile and Abbath in my office this week and people have been in and out of meetings with me this whole time.

Why the fuck would you care what anyone thinks of your taste?
>>
>>68542770
Nah, also people that ostracize you for something as silly as taste in music are scum and not worth anybody's time.
>>
>>68542770
Nope. I show those niggers my true power level. My friend started playing Young Thug in my car, so I had him turn that shit tier trap off and hand me the aux cord. Then I blasted Maniac Meat at full volume and that dense cunt never rode in my car ever again. Serves him right for playing that shit in my car.
>>
>>68543442
It's less about being yourself and more about being polite to the people you're with. What people who are really into music need to remember is that to most people, playing music in the car is just background noise to hanging out.
>>
>>68543459
Who?
>>
>>68543743
>It's less about being yourself and more about being polite to the people you're with
no thats letting someone punk you
normies always force their taste upon you because its accepted by society.
>>
>>68543403
Grow a pair and tell people what you like you faggot. Who gives a shit what other people think and if you lucky you might even find someone who listens to kpop too (the chance is hight that they are 14 year old girls though)
>>
>>68542770
>hiding what music you like
don't be fucking beta
>>
Nah I can't related tbqh

This!

You have to hit first

This is real life motherfuker

I don't really hide my taste in music. Though when I'm driving friends around I'll play hip hop like Kendrick; something that's popular and also genuinely good music.

The main thing to understand is that normies aren't really invested in searching for music as much as you are.
>>
>>68542770
>and you know better than to expose yourself as 'weird' to them
I honestly don't get this thinking.

Most of my friends and people I've talked to have had "normie" tastes in music, but I've never bothered to hide my taste in music
I mean, I don't talk about shit I know they have no interest in, and wouldn't plug in my phone to play music at a party or something, but why hide what you're into? Are there really people that treat you differently if you're into music they find "weird"?
>>
>>68543470
These people are pretty common in music courses, they love playing an performing but don't care so much about music as an artistic medium. They're not interested in hearing great compositions, it's more of a social thing to them.

When I did music A Level my teacher was the bassist in a jazz fusion band, and one time we met their drummer and I mentioned that I loved the drums on Giant Steps which led to him admitting he'd never heard of John Coltrane. Seems funny for a guy in a band with a bunch of jazz players to have never heard of Coltrane, but from his perspective he wasn't interested and just wanted to play some beats with his friends.

who are you quoting
>>
It's not hiding my taste, it's choosing to play stuff within my taste that I know they'd enjoy too. Black Tambourine or Dinosaur Jr might be too much noise for my less music-obsessed friends, but everyone loves the Beach Boys
>>
no, I'm not a music cuck
>>
You can expose yourself as weird as long as you're not hopelessly autistic.
>>
>>68544314
As a kpop listener this is basically me.
>>
>>68543550
I play grind when my mom's around sometimes to see her reaction
She knows I'm messing with her though
>>
>>68544629
This, how is this a problem for people?
>>
>>68545592
because most of this board is autistic
>>
>>68545592
The average age of /mu/ users is like 16
>>
I have pretty good taste so I always hid the fact that I think Death Grips are the only good modern musical act, mostly on /mu/ because you're all autistic.
>>
>>68544002
They don't search for music at all, just listen to whatever is trendy at the moment
>>
>>68545622
Only meme autistic.

>>68545641
Doesn't explain it, was never a problem for me as a teenager and all my friends were into the most normie shit possible. They knew I liked "weird" music but I was never embarrassed about sharing that fact and it never made things awkward or weird.

When there is something I'm kinda embarrassed about enjoying, like idk anime OPs or something, I normally "admit" to liking it in a self deprecating way and take the piss out it myself. That's always worked for me.
>>
You motherfuckers. You talk about normies like you aren't one. You're all normies. Talking about your FRIENDS and FAMILY. Talking to coworkers at your fucking JOB. But youre not a normie? Fuck all of you.
>>
>>68542770

For a long time I felt like I had to "dumb myself down" to get along with people around me.

What I discovered as I got older is that the reason I wasn't getting good results when I was being "myself" is because I was coming off as arrogant, self-important, or a know-it-all.

I can talk to to anyone about some crazy obscure band I like or movie I watched and they enjoy it because I don't talk down to them and I don't use it to condescend. Because I use it to connect with people rather than alienate them.

This probably isn't the case for everyone, but I think it's extremely applicable in this case, especially considering I probably picked up that attitude from spending my adolescence on 4chan and youtube arguing with strangers.

Fucking this.
I'm glad you learned this anon, I think a lot of people in this thread have the same issue.
