Christgau is a fucking philistine. Melon seems like a sensible down to earth man, and Scaruffi waxes towards being a pompous ass. With the albums depicted though I lean towards Scaruffi. To be fair he's also a decent resource, even just considering the shear volume of stuff he's rated.

It's something about the vocal delivery. It exudes melodrama (at least, that's how I perceive it). It feels like it's trying to be so intense that it becomes laughable. And the instrumentals are so skeletal that I can't not focus on it.

That's a fair grievance, but to me the lyrical content makes me think they're pretty self aware and not taking themselves too seriously

Scaruffi is the only reliable rock critic IMO. I was about to completely give up on rock critics and start listening to albums randomly before stumbling across his site. The most striking thing I noticed when I first started browsing his lists was that nothing cheap & overrated scored high with him. A true patrician.

Lester Bangs was good too. Perhaps even a more gifted writer on rock music than Scaruffi, but he died way too soon and left us with no comprehensive lists or ratings.
