I want a synth, like a good synth that (sorry for the upcoming cringe but its the only way I could describe it) sounds like it could be on a /mu/core release, or just something that is regarded as sounding professional.

Hate presets but I'd love to save my sounds, analog pls.

You might want to tone the bass sound a little bit, I like the idea but I feel that the percussion is clashing. While nice the part around 2:00 seems out of place, you should probably add some more stuff in the later of the second half.

Posted to last thread and got a pretty helpful review. Also asking about the distortion effect on my bass. To answer that question it was actually done on the synth program itself and not using a FL Mixer effect. The VST is Lennar Sylenth.

can I run a synth through pedals into an amp? I'd love to be able to use both my hands and feet with a synth.
>>
>>68540414
yes, but be aware that guitar pedals are made for really weak signals, so some might clip really easily

others have no problems with line level signals
>>
>>68540585
>>68540414
You can get a reamp pedal like the radial proRMP which will lower the signal level and change the impedance. You can also just lower the gain of the track before you send it out but then you're raising the noise floor so try it out and see if you need the pedal

thoughts on the arturia drumbrute?
im somewhat tempted myself
>>
>>68542467
I'm a huge fan of Arturia and am always on the lookouts for new good drum machines but honestly I'm not impressed with it at all. The whole thing wounds weak to me and the lack of any onboard effects seems just lazy. I mean they've called it the Drumbrute and there isn't even a 'brute factor' effect.
>>
>>68542448
A little further context;
There is a delay effect on the slap bass with an automatic slide, and the deep organy synth in the end was created by plugging in the "what do you want for dinner/SOULS" garfield comic into either harmor or harmless (i mix them up sometimes). For the weird percussion sound, I was originally going for a smw door sfx, but ended up somewhere between that and a fireball jumping out of lava instead

it's solid but limited
Very obviously 3 tracks with a few effects. I'm not saying you should overcrowd it but it needs something to discern it from the instrumental to a shitty Soundcloud rap.
>>
https://clyp.it/q0m1z0sr
Very slow-paced atm, thinking about speeding it up in the middle and lowering the bass a bit. This one will have words so I don't want to overcrowd it, what with the theme being limbo and whatnot. The real question is: will it blend?

no melody = no one remembering this track

>>68541929
research augmented and dissonant chords, so for instance play a E maj and on the next chord raise the root by one semitone as well as the 5th, you'll get interesting variation, also add 7ths and 9ths to give you more options, so okay though man

>>68540232
your bass is well too high, it's masking all your percussion - side chain it to the kick. Your melody is a little directionless also, doesn't really resolve, not sure if that's intentional or not

>>68539064
love it, reminds of some todd terje, good stuff

>>68538213
percussion build up, kick and claps, then add hi hat then bass, drop it then bring everything in. Don't do it conventionially every 4/8/16 bars, gets boring real quick, add a clap 2 1/2 bars in or drop everything and bring it in on the 3rd beat of the bar, catches your listener of guard.

>>68537311
switch your saw bass, it's v generic, everything else is sold, good work

the vocals that hit super hard at the beginning are too loud. the volume difference is too large, it hurts. Not sure I can make much sense of anything else in the song. There's 0 bass and very tiny thin subbass besides the kick. It's like, completely quiet below 80hz. Except at 2:11 where the pulsating pad pretty much occupies the whole spectrum. And just after that the voice sample is again too loud.
>>
>>68545025
Reminds me of a mix of Mazzy Star and Twin Fantasy. I like it the way it is a lot. I think the vocals may be a bit too loud in the mix. Or the background noise (what is that called? a pad?) may be a bit loud; sounds like it is drowning out the drums.

The end sequence; i'm not sure there's much to say. It's there and it's nice. The song definitely sounds close to being finished.

Usually if it has good specs and is cheap, it's safe to assume that the component quality or the build quality can be lacking. And one usually good way to tell is the price.

The clicky kick drum sounds ridiculous, I get that it gets used a lot by drummers who play blast beats but IMO it doesn't work with something that needs a bit of grunt at the low-mid end to go with that (pretty nice) bass guitar sound and the Maiden-esque guitars.

Ditch the click unless you need to hear the kick on phones at the cost of pissing off everyone with speakers larger than oreos.

+1 on the kick. you have plenty of room for more midrange in your drums, could go for a fuller sound instead of a minimal techno kick sample. the bass of the kick is too much and is just as annoying as the whistling click, with the added benefit of being physically distressing. the drums are too bright for the guitars, you could either dull the drums or saturate the guitars and eq in more high-end. the bass guitar doesn't seem to really merge into the song, i can easily hear it but it's almost like another song played under the guitars and drums, it doesn't seem to match what's playing. perhaps distort the bass more and mix in a highpassed version of the distorted bass into a lowpassed version of the bass without the further distortion to keep the low end clear to dirty up the string sounds.

overall too much 50hz not enough 300hz which makes it sound thin with a disconnected sub presence. don't just adjust those frequencies it's estimated ranges, look at a spectrograph.

composition is fine, i really like 1:47, it sounds so much fuller and lively. if you're not adding a voice then you don't have to mix or write as if a voice is going to be added in later and just fill that range with something to make it sound less empty.

That was a trick of mine when I did guitar music too, physically downtuned rather than digitally but similar - needs a really light touch to keep the thing intonated on higher frets because the strings are so slack but it gets a nice tone.

>>68537311
lots of potential, not a big fan of the bass though.

>>68540232
Assuming you're going for a Trappy style? If so i'd say open up that EQ some on that shamisen sounding thing. Maybe add another higher octave on top of it. Bass is good. Make the hi hats and snare a lil louder but shorten the transient on the snare some. You can also add some velocity/panning changes to the hi hat roll.

>>68543012
The song sounds like a polyrythmic mess, but I like it for some reason. Unless, you're recording this on your mic/going for some bizarre lo-fi sound, i'd suggest tweaking your EQ levels. Other than that it's sounds great and is oddly addictive.

>>68543966
Not very versed in EDM/Techno so i can't really give any advice or anything. Mixing and quality sounds good regardless. I say it might be a bit too long. Like, the build up is a bit much.

>>68544044
Tune the vocals, or the rest of your song. Other than that sounds fine short of turning some shit down.

>>68544711
The horns/flute seem a little distracting if you plan on just having this for background music. Maybe take them down an octave or loosening up the progression.

File sizes are the same because the exported track lengths are the same, as >>68555436 pointed out your reverse cymbal track is mostly silence but to get all tracks to line up with each other without re-assembling them in a DAW again they need to be the exact same length.

is it bad to do a 2 minute song with 24 seconds of actual unique content looped
>>
>>68555897
are there variations in the loops at all? or lyrics over them? if it's just a 24 second loop that plays 6 or however many times then you might lose people by the end of it
>>
>>68555809
no, it's still 48000 times 24 bit per second times two
>>
>>68555809

Silence isn't the same as "no data" - a silent wav still uses the same amount of data to describe silence as it would to describe a 0db sound and for a CD-quality wav file that works out at 16 bits for every 1/44100th of a second.

Thanks for the really nice feedback! Yeah I think I definitely went a little overboard on the separation here. I like the bass to have a gritty sound and be audible in the mix but I gotta get better at making it gel with the rest. Taming the overheads and making drums not too bright while still making the hits audible is one of the things I usually have the hardest time with too. I also often end up cutting a lot of ~3-400hz on a lot of tracks to clean up but I probably go overboard a lot there as well.

Tried to work with your suggestions just a bit quick here, I can only listen/mix with headphones right now though since it's 03:00 here:

Not so much as that, from memory I was tuning the low E down to a lower A so I didn't have the same lower range as a bass guitar but it was enough for demos, if a little strange for our bass guitarist to interpret when I was playing higher when he'd intuitively have played lower.
>>
>>68556520

...bearing in mind that my "demos" were me and a drum machine and two cassette decks bouncing takes back and forth adding guitars sound-on-sound through a home-made mixer - it was pretty ghetto and I had no cash at the time to upgrade anything.

think of resonance as a means of exponentially increasing the amplitude of a wave. the more resonance, the more dynamic the waveform is. So when you want to 'reduce the inherent resonance" you are actually trying to reduce the dynamics... make it softer, less aggressive, and more gradual.

try making narrow cuts on the eq at the specific frequency ranges to tame those areas that seem to get exponentially louder. You might even have to automate those cuts over time so you are only removing those frequencies when they become a problem.

using a compressor could help too, though this might not address the aggressively dynamic parts directly, but instead make the other parts more aggressive to match.

this makes perfect sense

producing is a form of self expression. self expression is a means of processing your inner thoughts, directly or even indirectly.

Say you are feeling pain or hurt, expressing that pain or hurt via your own music is a way of releasing that pressure you feel when you bottle up those emotions.

While it's very healthy to release this pressure, it may not be healthy is producing is your only form of release .

Maybe consider other means of releasing that pressure. Talking out your emotions to a loved one helps (but only if they are willing to listen). If you don't have anyone to talk to about that stuff, maybe see a therapist.

Ranking different synths by their versatility, fuckhead. Serum offers wavetable import, a number of different filters, effects section and a ton of modulation options. It's quite versatile.

Sylenth is good for bread and butter sounds, it can cover a wide range of sounds but it's rather basic. Sytrus offers FM, subtractive and additive synthesis with waveshaping options. FM8 is rather limited compared to it and the filter and effects section isn't that good, it doesn't do anything better than Sytrus does and it's more expensive to boot, so it's the contrarian option.

Massive is rather versatile and still has a place but it is showing it's age, wavetables and decent effects and filters, tons of modulation options. The Virus has subtractive and FM with wavetables and it sounds amazing doing it, great effects and filters, having a real analog subtractive to compliment expands the versatility there as well.

The modular is a fucking modular, nuff said, but it's expensive and complex. And finally, those shitty digital VA synths have all the limitations of hardware (limited voices, monotimbrality, DSP limits) with sound that is shittier than software. You'd be retarded to buy one.

In short, pic related.

Hey, thanks for that. I think the bigger problem is that any narrow-but-deep EQ cuts I make take out some core timbre (even though they neuter the painful resonance parts), and any wide-but-shallow ones just end up masking it. Compression could be an idea, but I think it'd result in the latter at higher volume, making the entire thing sound too resonant.

I'll play around with it and maybe think about some other sounds.

Anyone have any experience servicing a Juno 106? Picked one up for 100$, one of the six VCA chips is going out. From what ive gathered Roland coated the D80017A chips with a plastic coating that causes issues down the road. I've been looking into replacement chips and just coming up with the ones on Analogue Renaissance but hes out of stock and not shipping at the moment. Are there any other reliable clone chips out there? Is it worth just trying to remove the plastic coating?
>>
>>68567466

I have an MKS-7 (rack-mount 106 sounds plus TR-707) that had this issue and I removed the epoxy coating from all of the voice chips (the coating becomes capacitive after years of heating/cooling cycles) by soaking them in acetone and VERY CAREFULLY picking the coating out with a scalpel blade.

I didn't have the same benefits of diagnostics mode that the 106 has so I had to clean up all of the chips - if you know for sure which chip is at fault you could start with that one and see if you feel like taking the time to clean them all.

Pretty sure Synth Spa on eBay carries clones of the chips too so you could try there if you're not keen on cleaning the originals - it does work though, my MKS-7 works fine now.

Bump. There's like a 300$ difference. Is it compensated with sound quality and features or is that just the price of the extra plastic and keys?

Sorry I meant to compare it with the minibrute. Apparently the micro brute has mini keys and is only 300 (twice the cost of a volca), so it's like a mini version of the minibrute. Retarded naming.

I need help with garageband, I'll try to attach a vocaroo recording of what I need if I can

See image: I have an equalizer set up for these strings. What I want it to sound like is something more warbly and electronic, but it doesn't save when I do it. I saw a video say something about automation, but not only is that a huge PIA but it also isn't even working at all

Vocaroo: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1l5WtSBK7Cl
>>
>>68570500
you arent in the game?
>>
>>68570602
The effect you want can't exactly be achievable with just EQ. You'd need some type of distortion (like a lo fi mat) and an LFO. But I'm pretty sure that GarageBand has some "string" sounding presets in the synth instrument library; why don't you just use that instead?

thanks all for the feedback! I'll definitely be switching out the bass for something else, I'm just not sure what lol. It was more of place holder until I could find something that I liked. At that 1:03 gap, to fill in space, would it be cheesy to put in this?

Not even 100% sure what that even is

there are string presets but it doesn't give me the warbling I want, I want that kind of rapidly increasing decresing volume frequency deal

I suppose this is the right thread to ask
If I wanted to hire a composer to do a game soundtrack, what's the best way to go about it?
Talking about visual novels here

Basically how do I find people who produce music and are open for commissions/long term work.
>>
>>68572116
you could hire me, or don't and just scrap the idea of a visual novel because they're fucking silly. I hope you don't plan to sell the "game"

>>68572162
What are fair wages? And how long on average does it take to produce music? I'm sorry, I'm very new to all of this.

I know obviously you could just find someone you like on soundcloud or whatever and hire them, or maybe post an ad on a freelance site?
>>
>>68572162
>novels are silly and unprofitable
Tell that to 7th expansion and all the weeb developers that have been flooding steam this past year.

>>68572116
We'll, the first step is to start looking, anon. Be careful what you say and promise but be blunt, upfront and truthful. Be clear to the composer about what his goal is and give him only the exact information he needs for every piece you request; giving an example work helps a lot.

I suggest you check out what the book "Complete Guide to Game Audio" (by Aaron Marks) has to say on the subject. It's a very cool complete book. It's meant more for the composer and talks about what the composer, in this case of video game music, can do to get hired; where he should look. It will give you solid ideas also on how to talk with the composer and how to "strike a deal" with him, so to speak.

Let me see if I can put up a link...
>>
>>68572332
i never said they were unprofitable. I said I hope he doesn't plan to sell them because they're literally short stories with shitty MIDI keyboard in the background. That said I own almost every Sakura ____ game

tfw in cubase prologue vst there is a preset called "whizzle" and you press a few keys and it shoots up to 100db making a crazy sound
>>
>>68572277
Try some commision sites.
The money would probably depend on how long the piece needs to be and the guys skill. You would probably talk with the hired guy about the vision, he would make some demos and so on.
Mixing and mastering is probably not included.
>>
>>68572332
Thank you so much. I can probably find the book myself somewhere.

I've done freelance myself quite a bit (granted, on the illustration side of things) so I know what kind of hell getting hired can be like (particularly with clients trying to pay peanuts) so I don't ever want to do that with a composer I hire.

Also I want to make sure the process isn't too stressful for the composer, and have built up a list of music for each track that I think has a similar sound and feel to what I'd like.

>>68572375
It's just going to be a free short game on steam, kind of a thing for fun and to tell a story.
>>
>>68572277
>wages
The book talks about this in detail. You have many options. Most composers charge per minute of finished music. A good, average wage is about 150$ per minute of finished music. But like I said, you have options to negotiate. You can pay upfront (very hard for the composer to agree because he doesn't know how long or how much work will take to write the piece, unless you're just buying a finished piece), you can pay offer royalties (like 15-20%, this can vary widely, of game revenue) so that he lowers his 'per-minute' price. Or offer bonuses, where he lowers the 'per minute, price in exchange for, say, if the game sold 20k copies, he gets a 10k bonus for example.

>how long it takes
Depends on the piece and the expertise and readiness of the composer. Tchaikovsky composed Overture 1812 in six weeks, and he said he didn't like it because he didn't pour his heart and soul into it.

Em, do you still want the book on game audio?
>>
>>68572505
Yes, I'd love the book.
I was thinking going hourly in terms of pay? Because that would be fair to the composer.
>>
>>68572030
i literally did that at the same time I posted this thread and havent gotten a response yet

Here it is. Others are of course welcome to take it. Remove the " in the link; had to put them cus 4chan through my post was spam.

Hourly... you could but it wouldn't be practical. Some DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations aka music making programs) keep track of how long a project file has been open, but composition usually requires experimentation, at least in the beginning of the process, which also takes time. Most composers charge per minute of finished music because it's the easiest to calculate and keep track of. A very well done 5 or 6 minute piece (usually when a piece is requested, the desired duration is included) can take many many hours to write, again, depending on the composer and the complexity of the piece.

Hourly wage is used when the composer is a direct, full-time employee of the company and that often involves more than just composing the music, usually also mastering and programming in the music such were the case.

>>68573057

thank you so much for all the help anon

again, thank you! much appreciated

Almost all paid DAWs have demos available.
Download the demos and use them for a while until you find the one you're comfortable with. Work with that one for a while and once you think it's time, buy it.

Then again, the alternative the other anons are suggesting is also free.
