so, what are the albums of the year so far? i haven't listened to many albums this year, it seems, because all I have on my list are:

Blackstar - David Bowie
Skeleton Tree - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker

what do you guys have on your lists?
>>
Bon iver-22 a million
>>
Holy Wave - Freaks of Nurture
>>
these are my favorite in ni particular order

Pinegrove - Cardinal
TLOP
Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
Steve Gunn - Eyes on the lines
car seat headrest - teens of denial
the drones - feeling kinda free
Kaytranada - 99.9%
william tyler - modern country
the avalanches - wildflower
Andy Shauf - The party
PUP - the dream is over
Nick Cave - Skeleton Tree
Jesu And Sun Kil Moon
Nicolas Jaar - Sirens

I think Jaar is winning rn
>>
>>68515990
i've never been able to get into Bon Iver. I can admire their craft but they're not my thing, i guess. maybe i'll give this one a listen and see if that still holds true.

>>68516046
Never heard of them. thanks for the suggestion. i'll give them a listen.

>>
>>68516098
oh wow, i'd forgotten about the Jesu/Sun Kil Moon collab. i thought the album had a strong second half. the first couple of songs weren't as strong as the latter ones, imo. thanks for the list. i'll check some of those out, especially the Nicolas Jaar one.

Against me - Shape Shift with Me
Jeff Rosenstock - Worry
Kanye - Life of Pablo
Cage The elephant - Tell me I'm pretty

actually you seem insecure because you went out of your way to compile a list of literally who contrarian music nobody has heard and you probably don't like half of those albums.

you are bragging about your taste on a chinese cartoon message board anonymously.

wow, thanks for all the posts. i definitely have a lot of listening to do. however, am i the only one here who doesn't understand the appeal of Death Grips? i find the lyrics mediocre and somewhat juvenile. it's what would have appealed to me in high school when i used to listen to NIN, Ministry, PIg, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, etc. not to step on anyone's toes with that comment. even high school kids can have a developed musical tastes. Death Grips is simply not my kinda thing anymore. i also dug the new Radiohead but don't find myself drawn to it anymore. anyways, thanks, and continue posting, mates.

clear aoty so far is

niechec - niechec

nothing other album has given me so many enjoyable listens.

also like:

gaspar claus, pedro soler - al viento (classical)
true widow - avvolgere (stoner)
tonbruket - forevergreens (chillout, jazz)

bunch of disappointments too like jizue or EITS

hit the nail on the head. I'm pretty sure every /mu/ user has a death grips phase where bla bla angst bla bla edgy whatever. The production is usually solid, and it makes for fantastic running music (I'll give them lots of credit for that) but at the end of the day it's just not that good

In contrast to the general flood of good releases from the West, I have not heard many good albums from Korea this year.

Last year's Red Velvet and f(x) releases were too good.

This is a track from my favourite album from Korea this year - it's just charming, well-crafted electropop:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqw7ChnHAl0

Can anyone recommend me aught else? What have I been sleeping on, /mu/?

(The K-pop general doesn't talk about music, so I can't ask there.)

what do people see in Danny Brown? I think is pure shit, and I'm into rap...

Touché Amoré - Stage Four

Yeah K-pop/indie hasn't been too good this year.

Loving the new Neon Bunny, but I'm pretty sure you'll have heard of her if you're into Yukari/Aseul.

to each their own is my mantra. i haven't stopped regularly listening to Blackstar since January. i absolutely love the album through and through. i've yet to listen to an album that tops it as my personal AOTY. Skeleton Tree comes close and I still have to let You Want It Darker digest.

>>68541495
thanks for this Jazz list. i'll give them a listen soon. like hip hop, i rarely delve into jazz apart from the greats - Monk, Davis, Coltrane, and some Ethiopian Jazz.

Blackstar and XiuXiu plays the music of Twin Peaks but I haven't listened to much this year.

2016 reccs based on these likes?
>>
>>68525774
desu death grips aren't interesting to me cause of their ego / edgy / nihilist tendencies but through their stuff which subverts that (niggas on the moon, birds/fuck who's watching, even the almost spoken word projection in get got + shit)
>>
>>68525774
>>68545629
I'd love if they took a completely different direction in that regard too for once. Bottomless Pit was disappointing in that regard, especially after Death Grips 2.0 and the Bottomless Pit video on their channel. Not sure if I'd call them juvenile or edgy, though, especially compared to generic metal or whatever.

I still appreciate them for that unique sound, though. Even Bottomless Pit, which was catchy and combined their previous styles, was still unique in its own way and interesting to listen to.
>>
>>68546591
yeah, you're right. maybe juvenile wasn't the correct term. apparently David Bowie and Tony Visconti were listening to a lot of Death Grips while recording a few songs off Blackstar. however, similar to my aversion of Danny Brown, I just cannot get into their music. at times both seems more like performance art than music. kudos to them for breaking new ground, if that's what they're doing, but i rarely find pleasure in what i've heard from both.

>>
>>68545541
Weezer's White Album is actually a real return to form. I don't think it's as good as Pinkerton or Blue but it's very good. Not ABOTY but I feel it's worth hearing
>>
>>68550198
i absolutely love the electric guitar. i also love acoustic guitars, pianos, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tubas, drums, oboes, violins, and even the fucking didgeridoo. what's your point? i also maintain 808 & Heartbreak is the only Kanye album people will listen to years from now. while his other work isn't trash, i wouldn't rank any of it above Heartbreak.

>>68549795
i prefer music performed by musicians. how is this a "retarded" or even novel concept?

also, quit trying to shame people for the music they prefer. i've veered away from this and hope you guys will, too. that's some juvenile shit so quit it.
>>
>>68550563
if you don't even like kanye why are you trying to pretend like you listened to all of his albums and appear opinionated
>>
>>68550632
appear opinionated? huh? what does this even mean, mate? there's no pretending or posturing going on here. i've listened to all of his albums and maintain Heartbreak is the one that may stand the test of time. his older work already sounds dated - Jesus Walks, anyone?- while the themes in Heartbreak are both more universal and far-reaching than anything he's done since. i admit, i haven't listened to Yeezus or Pablo more than once or twice. while i appreciate the production, i found nothing approaching greatness in either. Watch the Throne was terrible and Twisted Fantasy had some good moments but doesn't reach the levels of Heartbreak.
>>
>>68550246
not AOTY, but the best release from Crywank yet
found myself listening to it quite a bit
