I've been listening to a lot Thee Oh Sees while researching amps and it's partially convinced me to get some sort of 70s MusicMan combo. If the guy who has the 65 head is here: are there any models I should seek out in particular/avoid? I basically want the smallest good one I can find since they mostly seem to be Twin-esque overkill.

There's nothing wrong with PRS SE as such, just get something with a bridge you can adjust depending on how thin/thick strings you want. Pre-intonated bridges like that only really works if you use the exact string thickness it came with from the factory.

I posted in the last thread not realizing it 404'd. The SE Soapbar II was my first guitar, and by far the best quality SE line guitar I've ever played. Their new SE stuff is not as good as the stuff from the years that the Soapbar II was made.

I wish I hadn't sold it. It's an excellent guitar. I never had an issue with the bridge, in fact I wouldn't mind having that bridge on a future guitar.

If you can get a good price on one, take it. P90's are noisy by nature, but if that's your sound then go for it.

Ignore people who tell you to avoid PRS just because they hate the brand. This is as bad as people who say avoid any other brand entirely for no reason.

You know, I never noticed it until now, but that heel is wrong. That's not a PRS heel... too small. The only pictures I can find of a supposed "PRS" with a heel like that are the pictures from ed romans website, which is (for those who don't know) the guy who made up the story about the bondo PRS.

Pic related is what a PRS heel shape/size looks like.

Concrete proof that ed roman is a jackwagon who faked his own death so he could post more lies on /gg/.

Ed Roman used to specialize in removing those ridiculous heels sticking up into the 15th fret on a double cutaway (something even a shitty Fender doesn't have). PRS has to use that heel because they're notorious for using shitty third rate rubbery mahogany that would bend and keep the guitar constantly going out out tune. It became a standard feature at one point and Ed used to evaluate the stiffness of the neck on a PRS and then recommend his heel reduction procedure if he thought the neck would hold tune afterwards. This was so the player could comfortably get the most out of the instrument past the 12th fret (lol).

On a side note it'd be nice if you were informed even once when you commented, PRS fag.

If your amp has an xlr line out, then you can do line out to usb audio interface to pc. Or if it has a headphone jack you can use that for the same chain but probably worse quality. Or even worse quality if you go headphone jack to line in on your soundcard. Audio interfaces often do have a port to hook a guitar in to directly but the tone will be bad.

Other options;
>guitar specific DI to audio interface to pc.
>mic to audio interface to pc

Nice try, PRS fag. Must be why it's the first thing that comes up when you search "paul reed smith heel" on Google. But yeah, "misinformation".
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=paul+reed+smith+heel

The truth is the reason that ridiculous heel is still being used is because it's still common for PRS to use rubbery mahogany and that heel is absolutely necessary for basic rigidity in most cases or the guitar wouldn't come close to staying in tune. Pic related, a $$$$$$ 2011 Paul Reed Smith Private Stock McCarty Signature. Nice, right?

need help /mu/. I have a pedal which makes feedback loops easy as fuck, but it only starts making feedback loops when the fuzz dial is at 12 o'clock+. from 9 o'clock-12 o'clock on the dial it's a really good, chunky fuzz sound.

thing is, I wanna easily switch between that regular fuzz and the feedback fuzz while playing, so I don't have to bend over to turn the dial when on stage.

is there any solution of quickly switching between spaces on the dial without fucking it up?

PRS guitars are built way better than any Gibson you can buy at a store. Even Roman admits this: http://www.edroman.com/rants/prs_faq.htm

Gibson guitars are built like shit, they're sold on the brand. The Epi LP Ultra is better than some of the lower end Gibson LP's that are 300-400 dollars more. Not to mention how heavy the LP is. Newer Gibson guitars are a waste of money. You can get a Pre 1995 PRS for less than a new LP, and it'll sound and play better.

Switch to a heavier gauge, yeah. I almost never break strings and I play pretty aggressively (I also use super heavy 110s). You probably have nothing to worry about in terms of unwinding.

Side note, where are they breaking? Nut? Bridge? Elsewhere? It might not be a playing issue, but a problem with the nut or bridge.

It might be that you have a sharp burr or scratch around where your strings rest on the bridge then. I'd take a look at it and maybe try gently sanding any rough spots you find the next time you change strings.

For E shape barre if you have power chords down a trick I like to do is to just start like you're playing a basic G like this:
D --5--
A --5--
E --3--
then all you have to do is bring your ring finger down to 4th fret G string and press the side of your index down and you're playing a major barre chord. And obviously if it's minor you don't even have to worry about the ring finger

Guitarfag here, I just picked up a bass a week or two for recording purposes. I normally play in drop B, but my bass was tuned standard when I got it. I need to tune it down, but I've heard if you just outright downtune it like you would with a guitar, it will fuck up the neck/truss rod due to the pressure balance or whatever. wat do?

Based on some advice I adjusted the truss rod. The neck on my guitar is now almost perfectly straight with just the tiniest bit of relief.

Ignore them, they're pretentious fags who've been playing since they were 5 and act like they're too good for a video game.

Rocksmith gets you what you need as a beginner which is finger strength and fretboard knowledge. It lets you "play" along to songs which makes you excited to learn. Then of course it throws in chords/legato/bends as you get better.

Obviously it's only a supplementary tool, not an all encompassing guide to guitar. But it's very good at what it does.

Yes it is great. It puts the guitar in your hand and gets you to practice, and God forbid, have fun while practicing. It'll get you more comfortable with your instrument.

Make sure to practice away from it, though, but I think it goes without saying that playing and learning in a variety of styles is the best way to go. Guitar Aerobics is a great book to get along with it for some more practice exercises.

Don't listen to all the pretentious kids who tell you to play scales all day long with a metronome and focus on music theory. It's great and all, but don't be afraid to just do what you want with the thing. It's your hobby and your free time.
>>
>>68440470
the problem with rocksmith is that your techincal abilty quickly exceeds your theoretical knowledge, which leads to fingerfucking the fretboard with no direction or rhythm. v bad.
>>
>>68440765
>play scales

scalefags/shapefags are even worse than tabfags, because they think they actually know shit when they do not. music theory is about understanding melodic phrasing, harmony, intervals, modes, tonic changes, rhythm, chords, etc.

If neck relief is correct, meaning the space between string and fret at the 12th is where you want it with capo on first fret and string held down on last fret, then adjust bridge saddles up as desired for your play style.

Entirely anecdotal.
I knew a guy who dicked around on that for a year.
It can teach you songs and finger dexterity, but his tone was extremely poor. He would press down way too hard on the fret raising the note sharp and almost never uses vibrato.

I use a bass strap with squishy neoprene type texture. I'm not sure what the material is called, it's the type used in the crotch of bicycle shorts to add padding.

Anyway, on both my guitar and bass i use the planet waves elliptical strap buttons. I really like those. They are not quite as secure as straplocks in theory but much smaller and no hardware required to attach to strap itself. I'm not doing 360 guitar toss over shoulder and around my back so i feel pretty good about the ellipticals as far as ability to keep the strap on.

John Dwyer is the reason I got my Music Man! Definitely get one, anything over the 70 watt models is overkill. Many MMs have a wattage selector so mine goes from 65 to I believe a 25-35. These things are tanks and super good for pedal platforming. The distortion on these are pretty shit so if you want a heavy tone you'll need a fuzz/OD.
Avoid: combos unless 2x12 if you're doing Oh Sees stuff, and anything with 100+ watts. Those are good as bass amps but guitar overkill
They're technically solid state amps so 65w isn't tube 65w. A good investment would be a head under 75w and a cheap cab. eBay is good to scour for auctions on these since people aren't really going crazy over these yet, I scored mine there for $350 and the orange cab for $125.

Not quite. I'm a physics major though so I can enlighten you.

Different densities in wood affect how much string vibration energy is lost when you pluck a string. A higher density wood will reject the string energy transfer into the body (this is called internal stress) and thus the string will vibrate longer. With that being said keep in mind two pieces of wood from the same tree would probably sound different due to slight differences in density. It would be very hard to attribute a sound to a certain species of wood.

Also keep in mind a higher density neck will resist the physical pull of the strings and thus stay in tune better. This can also be achieved with multi-piece lamination's which is common on 8 string necks for example.

When a manufacturer uses the misleading term "tone wood" they're really referencing a word that a luthier would use to describe a piece of wood that rings out a specific note when tapped. A piece of wood like this would usually be used for an acoustic rather than an electric guitar though.

Is the wood that your electric guitar is made of as important as your amp, pickups, etc.? Obviously not, but the idea that the wood used in an electric guitar has no effect on it's overall sound is wrong.

I'll bite though. If you took issue with anything I said then you'd be taking issue with the irrefutable science of physics, sorry. Which you're completely within your rights to do by the way, just understand you're openly admitting you're an idiot who denies the scientific facts by doing so. The wood used to construct an electric guitar will effect the overall sound of the instrument. Period.

All jokes aside, I would never say that wood plays the most important part in the sound of an electric guitar, I'm just taking issue with anybody claiming it plays absolutely no part at all. It does, there's no possible way it couldn't. It's literally physically impossible for that to be the case.

You guys would be right if an electric guitars overall sound didn't have anything at all to do with how long it sustains notes or how well it stayed in tune.

Unfortunately though both those things are crucial to an electric guitars overall sound. Sorry.
>>
Any of you guys play, alto or tenor, sax?

If so do you reckon it can be self taught if you already know a good amount of music theory?
>>
>>68447659
>study done by Matthew Angove, an honours student at La Trobe University proves that wood makes no discernible difference to the sound of a guitar
>no argument
>>
>>68447772
I think it's more about whether it's noticeable, I don't think it is and it seems Matthew Angove's study agrees
This would be even easier to test as it just requires guitars of different woods and shapes with the same strings and pickups.
>>
>>68447772
String gauge and scale length are way more important to how well a guitar stays in tune than the wood it's made of.
>>
>>68447805
>>68447838
>Matthew Angove
Post a link to the study then. So far all you've presented is opinion/hearsay rather than substantiated scientific fact.

The truth is this tonewood "denial" is a symptom of people on a budget afraid they're won't have access to a good guitar because of expensive "tonewood" they can't afford.

>>68447927
Nope. A quartersawn neck generally stays in tune better than a flatsawn one does, simply because of the structural difference. Noticeable? Absolutely. Never mind a multi-piece laminated neck like they use on an 8-string to keep it from warping under the string pressure. Your statement doesn't hold up to even slight scrutiny.
>>
>>68447782
Yes.
Don't play it, but I know plenty of people who had no musical background who learned how to play(and to this day can't just tell me what key we're in).
>>
I'm looking at this 07/08 mexican fender strat in a pawn shop, just wondering if /gg/ would give me some feedback on the issues I found with it, whether it's worth a buy, etc.

jumbo frets: never played anything like this before. feels like i have to actually think about how much to press down so i dont fudge the pitch of the note, especially on the low strings. currently on a squier cv where it's just press and go

SSH (pls no bully): tone sounds great, all the electronics work perfectly. really like the pos. 4 with the (split?) hb/middle pickup

tremolo: the bridge was cranked way up, as if somebody were engaging the tremolo arm with a lot of force. is it possible there are no springs in the back? is this something i should check/what do i do if there are no springs?

action: as a result of the buggered bridge, the action was a mile high, so i can't really be sure if the frets are totally even

neck: neck is curving inwards toward the strings a decent amount, but i dont think it's changing direction (somebody told me to watch out for roller coaster necks)

tuners: the tuners felt really loose (but smooth) compared to my squier. the guitar went out of tune after about 15 mins of playing, but the strings also looked a year old and when i picked up the guitar it was way way way below pitch, i had to tune it up from like d - b - e - f - a - d. would that have something to do with it?

other than that stuff, the guitar was a peach. triple ply pickguard, maple neck, white body (hendrix style, i guess). i really liked the feel of the satin maple neck compared to my ultra-gloss-laquer squier. felt very solid too, compared to a squier cv strat i was also considering (currently on a cv tele).

the shop has it listed for ~$400 CAD. other than a setup, what do you guys think? does it sound like a lemon or is it worth a buy?

They want to cite Matthew Angoves "study" as proof wood has no effect on an electric guitars tone.

I'm just asking to see the study, shouldn't be that hard.
>>
>>68447975
>you're too poor to appreciate my snake oil
So that's you're argument?
Did you ever question if maybe that new Les Paul with bloodwood binding, a peruvian walnut neck, and a Indian rosewood body is just a way to sell you something for far more than it's worth under the guise of tonewood?
>>
>>68448010
>jumbo frets
Your issue will be solved with a decent set up

>tremolo
The gauge of strings are too large for how many springs are in the back. The bridge should float only about .5-.8cm above the guitar
>>
>>68448073
Here's an article from La Trobe that talks about the study while it was being conducted.
It really depends on where he would have published his findings.

There's a big difference between saying 'having some effect' and 'having noticeable effect' on the tone.
And you have consistently failed to show us that there is a noticeable effect; you've merely restated that it does without providing evidence.
YOU are the one making this claim, therefore YOU have the burden of proof. So YOU show us a study where the wood makes a noticeable difference in the tone of the guitar.
Until then, you're just spouting shit.

I'll post these links as many times as you need me to, fella. Maybe you should actually stop and read through them instead of further embarrassing yourself?

What you're describing is literally physically impossible, any effect on tone is an effect on tone. "Noticeable" is a subjective term you've now decided to use because you can't actually defend your position. A deaf person wouldn't "notice" any differences for example, that doesn't prove there's no effect at all. All that proves is that the person is deaf.

Yeah sure. Woodwinds are pretty self explanatory once you figure how to blow on the reed the right way to make noise. It's not like brass, on the other hand, which is more difficult in terms of getting the thing to make the sounds you want when you want to make them and benefits from a teacher at least for the first year.

I have played clarinet and trombone in the past.

This is what capitulation looks like, /gg/.

There's no other option once you've run out of legitimate arguments.

So! To recap: the wood an electric guitar is made of will have an effect on its overall tone so Tonewoods™ are real!!

Yay!
